rgfellows:

Fun fact: the anti-Semitic stereotypes about Jews having lots of money/being greedy/cheap began in the Middle Ages thanks to Christian laws.

The Christian church began forbidding Christians from having professions that involved lending money, banking, or pawn work. It was because the church believed that money was ultimately unclean so although it was considered a necessity, Christians were instructed to deal with it as little as possible.

But someone still needed to run all of those money-based businesses. So these societies which were already run by Christian leadership basically made it a rule that these businesses had to be run by Jews since they were already “unclean”. Furthermore, due to other restrictions on Jewish people in these areas, these money-based positions were pretty much some of the only jobs Jews could legally hold.

This eventually led to numerous stereotypes involving Jews and money. And the acidity of these stereotypes grew when Christian people and leaders became resentful of the livelihood Jews were able to achieve for themselves with these jobs.

So to sum up: Christian society forces Jews to hold down money-centered jobs since, according to the church, Jews were already going to Hell. Then, once they made lives with these roles they were forced into, Jews were mocked and hated for being successful.

(JTA) — Anti-Semitic crime has risen to its highest level in the United Kingdom, according to a new audit released by the Campaign Against Antisemitism.

According to the National Antisemitic Crime Audit  released on Sunday, anti-Semitic crime in 2016 rose 44 percent from 2014.

The audit for 2016 registered a total of 1,078 anti-Semitic crimes in 2016. The audit found that 105 of those crimes were violent but that only one violent anti-Semitic crime was prosecuted. In total, only 15 cases were prosecuted, leading to the conviction of 17 criminals. In 2015, 12 anti-Semitic crimes were prosecuted, of which 3 involved violence, leading to 17 convictions.

In its recommendations, the CAA called for specific training and guidance on anti-Semitic hate crime for officers and prosecutors, appointing a senior officer in each force with responsibility for overseeing the response to anti-Semitic hate crime, and requiring the Crown Prosecution Service to record and regularly publish details of cases involving anti-Semitism and their outcomes, as police forces are already required to do.

Anti-Semitic crime has already been a factor in the initial months of 2017, with incidents including the firebombing of kosher restaurants in Manchester, a man stopped by police after chasing Jews in London brandishing a meat cleaver and machete, and police closing down London streets to make way for a major pro-Hezbollah march.

The group only began keeping statistics in 2014, though other outlets, such as the Community Security Trust, have been releasing figures for much longer. In February, the CST reported a record 1,309 incidents in 2016, constituting a 36 percent increase over the 2015 tally.

LOL I’m moving here in two weeks. Wheeeee.

(TL;DR: The situation was really not looking good, even before the upswing in hate crimes pretty much across the board. Amnesty has taken an interest.)

i was wondering “highest since when?” and they’ve been keeping track since 2014. so that’s kind of an odd superlative to use. although the numbers are still bad enough.

Yeah, that framing seemed kind of odd to me too. One reason for the addition earlier

My reporting on the Stars of David meme quickly went viral. At this moment it’s been shared more than 14,000 times by the likes of CNN’s own Jake Tapper and MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, who’s had his own run-ins with the president as of late. In the past, when a post or story of mine has garnered that much attention, I’ve always dealt with the inevitable criticism and harassment that follows. Sure enough, it wasn’t far behind.

Before the hour was up, I was receiving messages from the usual customers: anonymous accounts with Pepe avatars and bios declaring themselves “ethnonationalists” and “white identitarians.” Despite my Southern Baptist upbringing, they assumed I was Jewish because I’d uncovered anti-Semitism, and so the threats and memes predictably featured pictures of Adolf Hitler, scenes from the Holocaust and other anti-Semitic garbage. I was peppered with the usual slurs and insults before a user calling his or herself “Pepe’s Imam” told me: “There’s a civil war coming, leftist. Memes are the least of your problems.”

…I learned last year the best strategy is to be open about this kind of stuff and expose it however possible. On my Twitter feed I prepared screenshots of the offending rhetoric while critics accused me of lying. The left is the violent group, they told me while linking to stories about clashes with antifascist groups. In the same thread, as they claimed I’d made the whole thing up, the anti-Semitic materials and threats were piling up.

Things didn’t slow down.

The Daily Stormer, the most popular Neo-Nazi publication in America, set its sights on me and declared my agenda as “Jewish.”

For everyone who has replied to my original post about the CNN Stars of David meme and the correlation between antisemitism and hatred of “the media” with some version of “well CNN is terrible and President Trump has a Jewish daughter and Jews in his administration so he can’t possibly be an antisemite” as though my post and point was solely about CNN and President Trump (spoiler alert, those were illustrations of a greater issue and you should learn to read a full post instead of cherry picking discrete parts to, unsuccessfully, disprove the entire post). Read Jared Yates Sexton’s full piece at Politico.

I’d like to add that HanAssholeSolo has a history of doxxing women, too. He’s also part of a group that’s been doxxing anyone who works for CNN. This is what all the Pepe types do, they doxx anyone they don’t like to police their speech and silence them. CNN is very, very likely aware of this, too, which is how we know who HanAssholeSolo is and what kind of person he is in the first place.

Reports of antisemitic incidents increase to record levels in UK (From February 2017 – “Rise in incidents is blamed on factors including Labour party antisemitism row and rise in xenophobia after Brexit vote”)

In this context: Britain wins – for the most antisemitic attacks in 2010

The report’s co-editor, Dr Roni Stauber, said this is explained by the fact that while most European countries have either a strong far-right presence, as in Eastern Europe, or a strong Muslim pro-Palestinian community, as in Western Europe. What is “very unique to Britain” is that is both are strong, and both are perpetrating attacks against Jews.

There’s been an increase in reports across the board since the EU referendum vote (yay “strong far-right presence”), and what a surprise that this includes antisemitic incidents! :/

Amnesty International UK briefing: Tackling Hate Crime in the UK (from June 2017)

How big a problem is it?

Reliable statistics are hard to come by. However we do know that hate crime is under-reported. In 2015-16, police forces in England and Wales recorded 62,518 hate crimes. But the Crime Survey for England and Wales7, which provides an alternative measure, estimated that 222,000 hate crimes took place in the same period. Under-reporting varies significantly between different strands: recent figures in England suggest one in two racist hate crimes are reported to the police; this drops to one in four for homophobic crimes, one in 10 for religiously motivated hate crimes, and one in 19 for disability hate crimes.

Even when crimes are reported, they are not always prosecuted. In Northern Ireland, 1,614 incidents of hate crime were recorded by the police in 2016-17, but just 16 per cent have recorded ‘crime outcomes’, such as prosecution or police warning. Only 18 per cent of recorded racist hate crimes in
Northern Ireland resulted in a prosecution, police warning or other outcome8. Crown Prosecution Service figures reveal a similar picture in England and Wales, with the police service referring just 21 per cent for charging in 2015-16.

Anti-Semitic incidents rose a whopping 86% in the first 3 months of 2017

littlegoythings:

The states which had the highest number of incidents in 2016 and the first quarter of 2017 were:

  • California (211 in 2016; 87 in first quarter 2017)
  • New York (199; 97)
  • New Jersey (157; 24)
  • Florida (137; 41)
  • Massachusetts (125; 38)

These states also have some of the largest Jewish populations in the nation.

I don’t know how to explain to goyim that calling out anti-Semitism is not about hurt feelings or crocodile tears and everything to do with the fear of history repeating itself in the form of angry mobs hellbent on attacking Jewish people.

I don’t know how to explain that I am not calling Jay-Z out because I want to silence Black artists; I’m calling him out because I’m genuinely afraid that his false accusation about Jews owning all the property in America will result in people across the nation blaming Jews for the evils of the world and then inciting pogroms (violent mob attacks) against Jewish people.

I don’t know how to explain that I’m not calling out CDM because I don’t care about the liberation of Palestinians; I’m calling them out because I’m worried that if we allow non-Jews to police our beliefs and define for us what our ancient symbols mean, that it could ultimately lead to any displays of public Jewishness being deemed questionable or offensive, which could eventually end in violence against any Jews who are openly Jewish at public events.

I don’t know how to explain to goyim that nearly every Jewish person in the world either grew up with a relative who had to flee their home in the middle of the night because of this type of violence, or they actually experienced this trauma themselves. I don’t know how to tell them that this is an ingrained trauma in almost every existing Jewish family, and that it has been repeated every few generations across the globe since we entered the Diaspora nearly 2,000 years ago.

I don’t know how to explain that when people say almost the exact types of things that were shouted at my relatives by white Russian nationalists as they burned their villages to the ground that it doesn’t matter if you say you’re a progressive or an anti-racist, or you’re also marginalized in some way, because all I hear are the same words people have said to Jews for centuries before physically assaulting them, and I’m worried you’re going to eventually going to assault me, too.

I don’t know how to explain that if goyim read our history they might understand that we Jews have been used as scapegoats for the world’s evils everywhere on the planet from Lithuania to Ethiopia, and that regardless of our standing in society or our level of assimilation, that it’s always ended with our expulsion or murder or both.

I don’t know how to explain that I’m not trying to be petty or “take up space in the movement,” or draw attention away from other causes, but that I’m only asking for you to examine your words and actions now, while I still hope there’s time to pull out the seeds of anti-Semitism that have been planted, because I am literally afraid that if I don’t, you or somebody like you will ultimately be at my doorstep shouting “It’s their fault! Get them! Kill the Jews!”

I don’t know how to explain that I’m afraid you might believe the vitriol behind your words one day enough to kill me.

This is a message primarily for other gentiles:

With regards to understanding those visceral experiences of knowing the danger behind antisemitism – I’d also add that if you think you’re a non-Jewish person, you could be totally wrong.  Two of my closest friends grew up with no inkling of being Jewish.  As adults, one found out that her Welsh-sounding last name was deliberately changed (from Cohen) to hide her Jewish ancestry, and another discovered that half of her mother’s family died in the camps and the other half hid all trace of their Jewishness and moved to America posing as a different ethnicity entirely.  HER OWN MOTHER doesn’t know this.  Both of these things happened during World War II.

And if that doesn’t tell you how legitimately afraid of total destruction Jewish people are, I have no frigging clue what to tell you.  And if it doesn’t make you realize that you really have little to no way of knowing if your family is Jewish, and if therefore you should be afraid, for yourself even if you’re too selfish to care about people who know and/or can’t hide that they’re Jewish, I don’t know what to tell you.

And if you think as long as you don’t know, or aren’t practicing Judaism as a religion, or are passing, or aren’t technically Jewish by some standards because you’re only Jewish on your father’s side, or don’t “look Jewish” (read: look like a particular Ashkenazi stereotype) think again.  None of that stopped Hitler from going after people.  Hell, I’m not Jewish (1% on an ancestry test with zero known familial connection to the culture doesn’t count except to the most extreme antisemites), but people in my family have been targeted for antisemitic hate because they “looked Jewish” to some people.  (I still remember the look on my dad’s face when some kid sneered “hey, rabbi!” at him.  He was a dark-complexioned white guy with black hair, a long slightly bent nose, and a beard.)

Like, if you think you have no Jewish ancestry, you may be right, but you may be totally wrong – loads of people are from a Jewish family and don’t know it.  If you think not being Jewish will save you if you “look stereotypically Jewish” – all it takes is one of the wrong variety of antisemite to be the victim of a hate crime.  Some antisemites throw words, others throw grenades, and you can’t control which it will be or what they’ll think of you on the street.   If you think not being officially Jewish by some Jewish standards will save you, you don’t understand that antisemites don’t use Jewish rules to figure out who’s Jewish.  So even if you think you and people you care about won’t be affected by deadly levels of antisemitism, then you have no idea how antisemitism works.  Including that you or people you care about may be of Jewish descent because antisemitism forced your family to choose between death and destroying all trace of their culture even to themselves.

Try to fucking imagine what it would take to make you give up practicing ordinary things from your culture, important things from your culture, all of it, everything that makes you you, just to give your kids a chance at survival.  And maybe you’ll have some idea why even supposedly mild antisemitism has knives hiding behind it, and Jewish people can see it even if you can’t.  And as I said – don’t ever assume it won’t be you targeted if the shit hits the fan, even if you’re 95% certain you’re not Jewish, because I’ve watched two people learn about a heritage their own families had hidden from them, learn about dozens of dead relatives, and if it can happen to them it could happen to you.  And remember – they didn’t choose to lose their culture, that choice was made for them without their knowledge by relatives who didn’t tell them, and that kind of mess has repercussions for generations.  I’ve watched the repercussions.  Meanwhile other Jewish people either couldn’t or didn’t hide and they and their families paid the ultimate price – for not doing something nobody should ever have to do.  And the next person who accidentally finds out their family chose to pass as gentile (and may discover a huge amount of dead relatives whose memories had to be forgotten in order to pass, think about that too, if you judge anyone for refusing to do this to their families) could be you, or anyone you care about.  Jewish people come from everyplace in the world and can look like anyone, so you don’t know.

I’m not trying to say you should only care because it could be you.  That’s ridiculously selfish.  But most people are somewhat selfish or self-centered, so I’m just trying to get you to pay attention if you’re not already.  Don’t assume it’s someone else’s problem.  Nothing should be “someone else’s problem” to begin with – but nobody can even safely assume that it is.  Because antisemites don’t give a shit whether you totally assimilated or not, or whether you just have one Jewish grandparent, or whether there’s a 100% gentile heritage behind a stereotypically Ashkenazi appearance… if they can pin even a shred of Jewishness on you, those things won’t save you, and you can never safely assume they won’t find out.  Passing gives you cover, not a guarantee of safety or even survival.

Have you ever hated Jews so much you altered a play based on Torah stories

It’s awkward to talk about cultural appropriation when it comes to the Bible, but I’m not sure what else to call a production of a play about our ancestral origin story that excises our name.

If you think the mention of Israel is that inappropriate, maybe don’t do a play about the Children of Israel.

Israel doesn’t always mean the modern state of Israel. For example, a play written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice based on a story from scripture written THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. We’re Israelites/the children of Israel because we’re (yes, gerim too) descended from Jacob/Yaakov (who was renamed Israel when he wrestled with G-D…which, coincidentally, is what Israel means: wrestling with G-D).

Good lord. (P.S. Sir Tim Rice responded saying in part “Either don’t do show or do all of it as written.“)

When the line says “Reuben was the eldest of the children of Israel” n the songs ‘Jacob and Sons’ it was literal. FFS, this is ridiculous 😦 If you don’t know your bible well enough to know what Israel was one of Jacob;s names, then gtfo and don’t touch the show.

If people could stop saying that Ashkenazi Jews = ethnically European that’d be great. 🙂

If you can accept that “American” is a nationality, rather than an ethnicity, you can understand that “X European Country” serves the same function for Jews with history in Europe.

I really don’t like being called identical to the same people that killed/kicked out my family for NOT being like them, destroying much of our distinct culture in the process.

And please don’t use the fact that Europeans forced goyische last names on us as part of your argument. :)))

If you’re interested in genetics, you can even look at this cool study on Levantine populations. Jews, including Ashkenazim, have significant overlap with the populations studied. If one study isn’t enough for you, have a link to a bunch more that say basically the same thing!

Almost all Jewish groups are more closely related to each other than our neighbors, indicating common ancestry regardless of how far apart we’ve lived in the past, and we’ve never forgotten where we come from. We’re still a diasporic people with origins in the Middle East. Not Europe. History and science agree. Please stop trying to argue otherwise.

This is especially important with the renewed ramping up antisemitism.
