I totally get that wacky conspiracy theories are fun to joke about – but if you’re going to joke about lizard people, you should probably be aware that “reptilians” is a code-phrase for “crypto-Jews”.

When conspiracy nuts talk about politicians and celebrities secretly being lizard people, what they’re really implying is that they’re secretly Jewish. The whole “Reptoid conspiracy” thing is just a verbal smoke-screen – a veneer of plausible deniability.

Sure, you probably didn’t mean it that way when you joked about it. You probably weren’t aware of the double meaning at all. This stuff is pretty good at flying under the radar; indeed, that’s the whole point.

But, well, now you know.

is this really a thing? cause a lot of people think they are literally shapshifting lizards, and use stuff like red eye (from camera flashes) as evidence that they’re lizards and not human.

Short version: “Reptilian” to mean “crypto-Jew” does happen, but that’s not how it started out or how most people actually use it.

As far as I can tell, the “reptilians” thing started with David Icke, who literally believes that certain people are in fact shapeshifting reptilian aliens who have infiltrated society. A lot of people have been convinced by him. (It is shockingly easy to get people to believe Secret Truths, especially when they have certain mental illnesses.)

However, recently (and by that I mean within the last ten years or so) white supremacists – they like to call themselves “Nationalists” – have decided that when people talk about “Reptilians”, they’re really talking about crypto-Judaism, and have twisted the whole “Reptilian” narrative to fit their anti-Semitic agenda.

So. When the average conspiracy nut talks about politicians and celebrities secretly being lizard people, they literally believe this. When a white supremacist talks about politicians and celebrities secretly being lizard people, it’s an anti-Semitic dogwhistle.

So, well, now you know.

There is a massive overlap tho, between “white supremacists” and “conspiracy theorists,” and this is just one example of how the former sees the latter as fertile ground for conversion, and uses the latter’s own ideas to prepare them for racist ideology

Except that David Icke is actually a huge anti-semite who believes Jews control the world, but often back pedals in saying “no, not all jews, just the ones allied with the Rothchild’s. He’s been accused of anti-semitism for a long time, so now he says “Rothchild Zionists” as code for “Just those Jews I think control the world.”

He literally blames the Jews for both world wars and terrorism. Sometimes he says the Jews are the reptilians, sometimes he says they are allies of the reptilians, but he uses them interchangeably in his “who controls the world” ramblings.

He probably does mean the word Reptilian as interchangeable.

Also, please remember when folks like David Icke use the word “Zionism” they are not talking about Israeli nationalism, but rather are using it as a term for the Jews that they think control the world. It is not a mistake that people throw out the word Zionism as cover for their antisemitism – they are borrowing the use of the term from these people. More-over, people like David Icke have taken to using Israel and the Israel-related uses of the word Zionism as well as any anti-Zionist movements as a cover for the anti-semitic shit they spew. When people use Zionism to mean “all Jews” or “all Jews I disagree with” these are the people you are helping promote.

Even outside of his conflation, all the tropes he uses when talking about Lizard People are straight out of a long tradition of anti-semitism. Like he literally uses the term “blood drinking” all the time.

He’s a gross anti-semite and a terrible way to claim that Reptilians is anything but code for Jews.

I’m not saying a bunch of people don’t actually mean shape shifting lizards / lizard aliens. I’m sure most celebrities who use it, or people who joke about it on tumblr do mean it that way. But still all of the tropes used in those posts grow directly out of antisemitic rhetoric.

I wanted to list a bunch of videos for you, but honestly I really can’t deal with this rhetoric long enough to pick one or two. With the way some people on this site are so quick to latch onto old anti-semitic tropes and use them in what they claim is just anti-zionism, I’m super hesitant to link to them anyway. There is a reason he’s been around as long as he has and that he’s convinced so many people. He’s a con man, and he’s using millennia of hatred for Jews to peddle his books. If you do want to look up “David Icke + Jews” on youtube, pay attention to the ways he tries to rhetorically dodge the fact that he’s saying Jews control the world. He uses code words instead. One of them is Reptilians. And do not take a single fact he says as truth. Even the ones that aren’t straight up lies are only half-truths. The real kicker, is that these lies have been around so long that you can find all kinds of “citations” or “sources” for them. You’ve likely heard some of them before. Do NOT believe anything out of this man or any of his allies.

TL;DR – David Icke is a raging antisemite and the Reptilian rhetoric is about Jews whether or not the person who uses it knows that’s where it came from.

please stop reblogging sylvia plath poetry

For ppl asking why she’s an anti black, anti Semite. She has used the n word and compared her depression to the holocaust

Even not counting her poetry her private journals are full of disgusting, overblown antisemitism. She didn’t just use Jewish people for her metaphors, she outright hated them irl and yet decided to use their suffering for her own gain

here’s a source with some quotes

okay, I’m Jewish and I appreciate this sentiment. and if someone wants to cut out Sylvia Plath, go for it, I get it.

But. by this logic we’d also need to stop reblogging TS Eliot, Oscar Wilde, and Shakespeare quotes. Virginia Woolf wrote anti-semetic things in her private journals, too. If you only want to read classic poets who liked Jews and black people, that’s fine, but like. good luck? Sylvia Plath isn’t an exception.

idk. Tumblr’s attitude of “consume nothing problematic” just doesn’t work if you’re part of a group that most culture-creators over the last few centuries have hated by default. For people actually in those groups, it’s not like the only two choices are 1) worship authors who hate you or 2) completely cut the majority of literature out of your life. You learn to read critically and acknowledge flaws where you find them.

anyway, as a Jewish woman, I would much rather see a version of this post that said “please read Sylvia Plath poetry critically because she’s anti black and antisemetic” than just “stop reblogging Sylvia Plath poetry.”

IMO, reblog Sylvia Plath all you want, just not unthinkingly.

Sometimes I fell like tumblr has put itself on the the extreme opposite of “consume stuff incritically”

“Don’t consume stuff instead of dealing with it.”

If I ignore its existence then I won’t have to take a layered view on it.

But guys… anti-semitism is a thing and it’s been a rampant thing for centuries. You can’t ignore that the middle ages or the early 20th century existed. Or heck, the middle of the 20th century in the US.

People always are a product of their times. And some times where just racist as fuck! That was normal! And that is something you have to look at and look at critically because these times will return. And very normal people who are talented and nice will have very horrible, unthinking opinions.

That includes you, btw.

So think instead of ignore.

“In reality, just like everyone else, people on the contemporary left pick and choose when to be practical and when to be idealistic. That there appears to be no desire on the part of Women’s March to confront Jew-hatred specifically and substantively, even as most religious hate crimes target Jews and anti-Semitism stats rise, is something that should trouble anyone of genuine antiracist sentiment. That the group refuses to be accountable for a high-level alliance with an open anti-Semite disqualifies it from ranking among today’s movements for social justice.”

“The name Hitler does not offend a black South African because Hitler is not the worst thing a black South African can imagine. Every country thinks their history is the most important, and that’s especially true in the West. But if black South Africans could go back in time and kill one person, Cecil Rhodes would come up before Hitler. If people in the Congo could go back in time and kill one person, Belgium’s King Leopold would come way before Hitler. If Native Americans could go back in time and kill one person, it would probably be Christopher Columbus or Andrew Jackson. I often meet people in the West who insist that the Holocaust was the worst atrocity in human history, without question. Yes, it was horrific. But I often wonder, with African atrocities like in the Congo, how horrific were they? The thing Africans don’t have that Jewish people do have is documentation. The Nazis kept meticulous records, took pictures, made films. And that’s really what it comes down to. Holocaust victims count because Hitler counted them. Six million people killed. We can all look at that number and be rightly horrified. But when you read through the history of atrocities against Africans, there are no numbers, only guesses. It’s harder to be horrified by a guess. When Portugal and Belgium were plundering Angola and the Congo, they weren’t counting the black people they slaughtered. How many black people died harvesting rubber in the Congo? In the gold and diamond mines of the Transvaal? So in Europe and America, yes, Hitler is the Greatest Madman in History. In Africa he’s just another strongman from the history books.”

— Trevor Noah, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood (via christymtidwell)

Anyone who thinks this is anti-Semitic is wilfully misreading the text. The discussion is about how Euroamerican history is elevated and used to humanize the cost of white bodies over that of the Global South under Euroamerican colonialism.

No one is saying Holocaust deniers don’t exist. But almost everyone in the world learns about it, of who Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini were. The rest of us are just erased or shrugged off like our dead don’t matter. It’s not because Jewish people are privileged in Europe and America, it’s because Jewish people are PART of Euroamerican history and the Holocaust serves the narrative of British-American war heroism.

Anti-Semitism exists and is no less a problem than racism. But you can’t use that to silence PoC struggles or to police our words.

There are white folks who come to see our war monuments (1983 – 2009, hundreds of thousands dead) and scoff that the Holocaust was way worse. Let that sink in.

Jewish descendants have passing privilege, which is this awful in-between where they get to be “white” when people question why they’re being targeted to make it seem less racist, but get to be “not” when armed Nazis are circling their temples again.

The US’ Holocaust obsession isn’t about “these guys are paler than the other ones, cool!”

It is about reputation guarding against the fact that the US was the admitted inspiration for Hitler’s level of horrors.

We’d go back in time to kill Columbus because that might have stopped that specific wave.

No doubt another conqueror’s death farther back (or even at the same time as Columbus) would have disrupted his methods, too.

I agree with most of the above mentioned – I’m just cautious of any grounds that reminds me of the “Jewish folk are white” rhetoric that occasionally goes around.

Jewish leaders accuse Jeremy Corbyn of ‘siding with antisemites’

littlegoythings:

Jeremy Corbyn has apologised for what he called “pockets of antisemitism” in his party, as Jewish leaders issued an extraordinary open letter accusing the Labour leader of “siding with antisemites”.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council urged supporters to stage a show of solidarity outside parliament on Monday as LabourMPs hold their weekly meeting — which Corbyn is not planning to attend.

They were spurred into action by the latest row over antisemitism in the party, which saw Corbyn express regret for apparently showing support for the creator of an antisemitic mural in London’s East End six years ago.

In the strongly worded letter, Jewish leaders claim the mural row was just the latest evidence that the Labour leader “cannot seriously contemplate antisemitism, because he is so ideologically fixed within a far-left worldview that is instinctively hostile to mainstream Jewish communities”.

“Again and again, Jeremy Corbyn has sided with antisemites rather than Jews. At best, this derives from the far left’s obsessive hatred of Zionism, Zionists and Israel. At worst, it suggests a conspiratorial worldview in which mainstream Jewish communities are believed to be a hostile entity, a class enemy,” they say.

As well as the mural, the signatories, Jonathan Arkush, the president of the Board of Deputies, and Jonathan Goldstein, the chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council, cite what they claim is Corbyn’s friendship with Hezbollah and Hamas, and his opposition to the extradition of controversial Muslim cleric Raed Salah.

Corbyn issued his own statement last night, saying he was “sincerely sorry for the pain which has been caused”, by what he called “pockets of antisemitism”.

“Our party has deep roots in the Jewish community and is actively engaged with Jewish organisations across the country,” Corbyn said. “We are campaigning to increase support and confidence in Labour among Jewish people in the UK”.

But the chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said Corbyn’s apology “might be too late”. Karen Pollock told BBC Radio 4’s The Westminster Hour: “When there were examples of Labour party members saying ‘Jews kill and kidnap their way around the world’ or referring to the Holocaust Educational Trust as the ‘Holocaust Indoctrination Programme’ … was that not enough to make the leader of a Labour party say it’s disgusting and this has to stop?

“I spend time with Jewish people who are concerned about this sort of rhetoric and our leaders shouldn’t have to be put into a corner to say sorry and to say it has to stop.”

Several Labour MPs have said they would like to hear an explanation from Corbyn directly, after Facebook posts emerged in which he appeared to show his support for a antisemitic mural in 2012.

The Labour MP Wes Streeting said: “We can’t have a situation where one of Britain’s political parties is seen as a no-go area for one of Britain’s faith groups.”

Corbyn is not expected to appear in person at the parliamentary Labour party’s regular Monday evening meeting, the last before parliament rises for Easter recess, but he said he would be meeting with Jewish leaders in the coming days and weeks.

On Sunday, the Jewish Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council issued what they described as a “call to action”, urging “members of our community and all those who oppose antisemitism” to gather in Parliament Square on Monday as Labour MPs meet inside.

Jewish leaders accuse Jeremy Corbyn of ‘siding with antisemites’

dear Christian friends: PSA

therenegadegabbai:

therenegadegabbai:

dear Christian friends! since we’re now approaching Easter and Pesach…

if you’re a Christian in the US, you’ve probably seen a church advertise a seder. [a seder (lit: order) is a Jewish festive meal, often for the holiday of Pesach, or Passover]. churches will often put on seders for Easter in a misguided attempt to connect to the last supper, or will use it to celebrate Pesach in a Christian manner. this might have happened in your church. you might have attended it.

[psa: i don’t blame you for being taught that this was okay! but,] here are some reasons why that’s a problem:

  • seders are a specifically Jewish ritual. the same concerns about appropriation apply here–this is a sacred practice by us and for us, and if you’re not invited to participate (which often happens! talk to your Jewish friends!), it is harmful for you to take our ritual and use it to suit your own purposes.
  • Jesus was a Jew. cool! let’s talk about it! interfaith dialogue is my jam. but Christianity has been a separate tradition from Judaism for 2000 years. you have your own holy traditions and practices, as do we, and all of those have changed over the last two millenia. Jesus’ Judaism looked very different than today’s, not least because he lived in a time when there was still a Temple in Jerusalem. in his time, Pesach focused on a physical korban, or sacrifice at the Temple, and the rabbinic extrapolations that formed the modern seder had not been set down in writing. while the modern seder uses ritual foods and texts to recall or fulfill similar functions to the korbanot, it is not the same as a celebration of Pesach that would have occurred during the Second Temple Era. that the holy figure of your faith celebrated a ritual that shares ancient roots with our modern ones does not entitle you to the modern ritual.
  • the above applies whether or not the last supper was in fact a Pesach meal. biblical historians can debate this more completely than i can, but in either case, the modern Jewish seder is the result of 2000 years of Jewish development independent of Christianity. it is not yours.
  • also, given that one of the central tenets of our tradition is that Moshiach, or the messiah, has not yet come, it’s pretty squicky for us to see a messianic group appropriating a Jewish practice in service of their messiah.
  • also, you all have some pretty cool practices as far as i can see! you have a beautiful and vast tradition to draw from when celebrating Easter and other holidays. why appropriate when you could be celebrating something wholly your own?
  • the history of antisemitism is long and checkered, and unfortunately has quite a lot to do with Christianity. Christianity has been a major body in the oppression, disenfranchisement, and murder of Jews for centuries. whether accusing us of killing Jesus, relegating us to ghettoes, perpetuating damaging stereotypes, limiting our citizenship, encouraging and engaging in large-scale murders of Jewish communities, expelling us from cities and nations, forcing conversions, or many, many other acts of antisemitic violence over the years, the church has consistently given religious power to antisemitic positions. while this has improved in certain places in recent years, it’s a long history. and its effects are still felt today–even in Christian-majority places where physical violence has become less common (though by no means absent), Jews have to fight for our ability to celebrate real Pesach, often facing the possibility of retaliation when taking time off of work or school, while Christian holidays are made federal. elsewhere, Jews continue to hide in our homes during the Easter season to avoid those set on revenge for Jesus’ death. it rankles when anyone takes our traditions, but when the people in question are part of a legacy that has, through physical and institutional violence, prevented us from celebrating them ourselves, it is all the more harmful.
  • antisemitism related to Pesach specifically has also had a massive and devastating impact on Jewish communities around the globe. the blood libel, one of the most pernicious antisemitic myths, accuses Jews of kidnapping and murdering Christian children in order to use their blood to make matzah, the unleavened bread used in Pesach seders. it has been used to call all Jews child-killers, bloodthirsty, predatory, and cruel. it was an impetus behind most of the major European-Christian acts of antisemitic violence, including the Inquisition, the Holocaust, and pogroms, and is still in use today, all around the world. the very observance of Pesach has been shaped by this violence–for example, many Ashkenazi Jewish communities still have a practice of using white or raisin wine instead of red for their seders, simply because the danger of being killed for having a cup of red liquid on a Pesach table was so great. for the right to celebrate this holiday in particular, millions (and no, i am not exaggerating) of Jews have been murdered. Pesach is a celebration of our freedom from bondage, but it has also been a time of fear. you can have a seder on a whim. we put our lives on the line.
  • please respect our history. if you have questions, my inbox is always open, and if you’d like to learn what a real seder is like, so is my door!
  • further reading

SO, what can you do? if you see a local church advertising a seder and are in a position to speak out, do so. if you’re not, that’s okay. but start these conversations whenever you can. and you can always, of course, get in touch with your local Jewish community and learn about actual Jewish practices! appropriation is not the only way to connect to Jews or Judaism. let’s celebrate these springtime holidays in the spirit of interfaith understanding!
