A federal judge in Montana on September 1, 2018 placed a temporary 15 day hold on Wyoming and Idaho’s plan for grizzly bear hunting. The hunting was to take place in two phases – the first phase was to start on September 1 and extend throughout the Bridget-Teton National Forest, Shoshone National Forest and Caribou Targhee National.
.
The second phase of the grizzly bear hunting would begin on November 1 and this area of hunting would come very close to the borders of Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Licenses were sold at $6,000 dollars for a non state resident and $600 dollars for a resident. This second phase will be much closer to the Yellowstone (Area 1 is west of Cody, Wyoming to the borders of Yellowstone) the Area 2 and Area 6 hunting are on the west and southern borders of Grand Teton National Park outside of Jackson Hole.
.
The state of Montana has decided against allowing hunting of Grizzly Bears. It is estimated that there are anywhere between 1,000 to 1,300 grizzly bears in the lower 48 states of the US. Given mortality and death from natural, environmental causes, death from motor vehicles -increasing the number bears that can be legally taken will probably place a lot of pressure on this population.
.
There are other very small pockets of grizzly bears isolated in United States including in the Cascade National Park and Olympic National Parks. There are rumored to be grizzly bears in Colorado however this has never been confirmed. [Image: This is a photo I took of a female sub adult grizzly bear. In Today’s Absolute Unit News…

From June to October, brown bears gather at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve
in Alaska to feast on salmon and pack on the pounds. More body fat
means a better chance of winter survival for brown bears.

To educate and
engage the public, the park held a Fat Bear Week competition to
encourage people to vote for their favorite chubby bear.

Yesterday, 409
Beadnose was crowned the winner. All hail the Queen!

Check out Katmai National Park & Preserve’s page for more information and join the conversation. — at Katmai National Park & Preserve.

The results are in. And this year’s winner in Katmai National Park and Reserve’s annual “fattest bear” contest is 409 Beadnose.

“Her radiant rolls were deemed by the voting public to be this year’s most fabulous flab. Our chubby champ has a few more weeks to chow down on lingering salmon carcasses before she heads up the mountains to dig herself a den and savor her victory,” the national park posted on Facebook.

Katmai National Park, located in southwestern Alaska, declared the winner of its weeklong competition late Tuesday. People could vote on social media on which bear looks to be the fattest in the preserve.

photos by lassi rautiainen, susan brookes and staffan widstrand of a rare friendship that developed between a female grey wolf and a male brown bear in northern finland.

notes lassi, “no one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends, but i think that perhaps they were both alone when they were young and a bit unsure of how to survive alone. it seems to me that they feel safe being together.”

the photographers also note that the two share every meal together, bringing each other their kills (as seen in the third and fifth photos).

It’s that time of year again!

You’d think it’d be 32 because he’s got a slight weight advantage, but 856 is the underdog.

but where’s my boy 480 Otis?

480 Otis got out-fatted by 409 Beadnose this year.

My prediction that 856 would be 32 Chunk was wrong.

My money is on 747, the dude is a straight MONSTER

FUCKING U N I T

This is the only bracket anyone ever needs to care about all other brackets are cancelled.

This is Otis. He lives in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Otis is so fat that he’s been king of the National Park’s Fat Bear Week two of the past three years. Otis, is 22 years old, with blondish brown hair, a straight, narrow nose, and deep scars on his neck and above his right eye. When he’s at the top of his game, fans describe his neck as “relatively thick,” his body “walrus-shaped.”

I already posted another photo with a fat bear, another nominee in the Fat Bear Week contest.

The story about Otis, bears, Katmai National Park, bear hibernation, Fat Bear Week and all things related is a fun story in Outside. Here’s the link if you want to read it.
