Since conversion therapy is looming in everyone’s consciousness right now:

This is your regular reminder that ABA, the generally-recommended therapy for autistic children, is literally conversion therapy with an extra dose of “auties aren’t even real people” thrown in for good measure. It was conceived by the same people, from the same research, for the same ends: To brutalize and torture children into a narrow range of “acceptable” behaviour.

And it is considered totally legitimate and valid and even preferred by the overwhelming majority of the medical industry.

Do not leave disabled people out of your activism.

To put it as simply as possible, conversion therapy IS ABA. Conversion therapy is ABA used to try to make people straight and its no less inhumane when used to make people neurotypical.

California Drops Bill Banning Anti-LGBTQ Conversion Therapy in Surprising Move

projectqueer:

As the legislative session winds to a close for the year, Assembly Bill 2943 was removed from consideration on the final day of debate. Although California passed the nation’s first-ever bill outlawing conversion therapy in 2012, AB 2943 would have built on the previous legislation by expanding its scope.

In addition to preventing the harmful, discredited practice from being performed on individuals over the age of 18, it defined any attempt to “cure” the sexual orientation or gender identity of an LGBTQ person as “fraud.”

AB 2943 passed both the California Assembly and the Senate with wide majorities early in the year and was set to head to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk following one final vote in the lower house of the legislature. Brown, a Democrat who has signed many pro-LGBTQ bills during his time in the governor’s mansion, was widely expected to approve it.

Religious right says CA legislation will outlaw the Bible, but didn’t they claim the same thing about hate crimes legislation?

bi-boomer:

The ease with which they do it would be funny if it weren’t for the fact
that they are able to repeatedly do it even when their dire predictions
prove wrong.

For example, there is a bill in California which would outlaw marketing
or selling the fraudulent practice of ex-gay therapy.  At first,
religious conservatives were attempting to portray it as something
called a “must stay gay” ban. However, sensing how inane that was, they moved to a familiar lie – claiming that the bill would ban  the Bible.

On several fronts, from the Family Research Council, to the American Family Association’s fake news source One News Now, and to other areas, the religious right and conservatives portrayed California’s bill as an attack on Christianity.

The claim is a basic lie. According to the fact-finding site Snopes:
