I need to delete the Tumblr app from my mind, because when I saw this, I just. My brain looked at this fantastic and imaginative engraving of an excellent snake, sniggered, memed, and presented it to my mind’s eye formatted as a flag, with a banner at the bottom reading

I was reading about Japanese seafood and came across a type of conger eel called Anago (
穴子

).

Literally translated from Japanese into English, the name means “Hole Child”.

I was a little confused until I saw this image.

This is neat because these are Japanese traditional eel traps too! The cunningly effective trap is: these fish like tubes a whole lot. So much, in fact, that if you pull a tube out of the water, the eel will stay in the tube.

Look closely – but not too closely – and you can see how the purplemouth moray eel gets its name. This is one of several species of moray eel that can be found in the reefs of Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
