🎶 Who captures fish raw with two sets of jaws? That’s a moray! 🎶

Look closely – but not too closely – and you can see how the purplemouth moray eel gets its name. This is one of several species of moray eel that can be found in the reefs of Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.

Why you shouldn’t put goldfish in a bowl – WTF fun facts

By the way, bettas are the same. It’s a myth that they live  in puddles. Wild bettas live in rice patties that look like this:

And you know how males fight in captivity? Yeah see, in the wild, each male betta has a territory of roughly one square meter [X]. That’s over 260 gallons of water per betta! Of course they’ll fight in a tiny 1 gallon tank! (The myth about puddles exists because, in the dry season, a betta may get trapped in a puddle, and it is equipped to survive that, but only for a short period of time). Also, notice how much is growing in that water – bettas need a lot of places to hide in and rest on, not just a single bamboo shoot in  the center of a vase! They will get stressed and even more aggressive without the hides.

Fish are animals just like your other pets. Do your research before buying and treat them appropriately. If you can’t afford a proper betta or goldfish set up (at LEAST 5 gallons for a betta with a heater and hides, at LEAST 20 gallons for a goldfish with a strong filtering system and NO GRAVEL, and I recommend adding at least 10 gallons to those minimums for healthy and happy fish), don’t get one. They are living things, not decor pieces.

You know what is another very good genus of tiny marine gobies?

The genus Tryssogobius!

Also known as the Fairy Gobies, which is both apt and adorable, or sometimes as the Tiny or Blue-eyed dartfish. These are gobies though. True gobies to be exact (in the subfamily Gobiinae).

These guys are also very diminutive, ranging in size from 2-3 cm in total length. Another fish on my dream team nano fish wish list, fairy gobies do occasionally pop up in the aquarium trade.

I’ve said this before, but I hate “aesthetic” photos taken at the expense of fish. Like a picture of a fish in a sink. Or a phone booth filled with hundreds of goldfish. People tend to think of fish as lesser animals but they can feel pain and stress just like any other being. It’s straight up animal abuse to use fish as a disposable prop or to make a pretty tank without taking the fish’s needs or health into account. Please think before you reblog such posts. They are animals capable of suffering, not decorations.

MATING DEEP-SEA ANGLERFISH RECORDED ON VIDEO FOR THE FIRST TIME

Scientists have hardly ever seen anglerfishes alive in their natural environment, in fact, what we know about these weird fishes comes from specimens caught in traps and brought to the surface.  But now a video recorded in 2016 at a depth of 800 meters in the waters around Portugal’s Azores islands, has surprised the science community.

The high-quality video shows a female fanfin angler

anglerfish (Caulophryne jordani), resplendent with bioluminescent lights and  elongate translucent filaments

projecting outward from her body. She is also attached to a male, who basically acts as a sperm provider.

Males have well developed sense organs that are used to find a female. When a male finds a female, he bites her and doesn’t let go. His skin fuses with the female and he becomes a parasite symbiont on her. Love is love.
