Anti-Semitism At Highest Level In UK, Study Finds – The Forward

(JTA) — Anti-Semitic crime has risen to its highest level in the United Kingdom, according to a new audit released by the Campaign Against Antisemitism.

According to the National Antisemitic Crime Audit  released on Sunday, anti-Semitic crime in 2016 rose 44 percent from 2014.

The audit for 2016 registered a total of 1,078 anti-Semitic crimes in 2016. The audit found that 105 of those crimes were violent but that only one violent anti-Semitic crime was prosecuted. In total, only 15 cases were prosecuted, leading to the conviction of 17 criminals. In 2015, 12 anti-Semitic crimes were prosecuted, of which 3 involved violence, leading to 17 convictions.

In its recommendations, the CAA called for specific training and guidance on anti-Semitic hate crime for officers and prosecutors, appointing a senior officer in each force with responsibility for overseeing the response to anti-Semitic hate crime, and requiring the Crown Prosecution Service to record and regularly publish details of cases involving anti-Semitism and their outcomes, as police forces are already required to do.

Anti-Semitic crime has already been a factor in the initial months of 2017, with incidents including the firebombing of kosher restaurants in Manchester, a man stopped by police after chasing Jews in London brandishing a meat cleaver and machete, and police closing down London streets to make way for a major pro-Hezbollah march.

The group only began keeping statistics in 2014, though other outlets, such as the Community Security Trust, have been releasing figures for much longer. In February, the CST reported a record 1,309 incidents in 2016, constituting a 36 percent increase over the 2015 tally.

i was wondering “highest since when?” and they’ve been keeping track since 2014. so that’s kind of an odd superlative to use. although the numbers are still bad enough.

Brexit vote sees highest spike in religious and racial hate crimes ever recorded

Founder of Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND), Sufyan Ismail, added that the recent terror attacks had also provoked a spike in hate crime which will have contributed to the new figures.

“Our Islamophobia Response Unit has seen a considerable rise is hate crime cases reported to us; many Muslims are feeling more vulnerable than ever,” Mr Ismail said.

“We have dealt with 23 cases alone since the April attacks. The nature of these cases we have seen have varied from a large FTSE 100 company summarily dismissing their Muslim employees, to attacks on public transport, and a number of schools denying their pupils prayer facilities…

Ms Ashraf, who is a member of campaign organisation Stand Up To Racism, said she and her Muslim friends had noticed a marked rise in hate crime against them since the Brexit vote: “I think we’ve seen more since the referendum, there’s no doubt about it. But definitely over the last couple of years we’ve become more cautious when we’re out and about.“

A lot of Muslims I know, especially my female Muslim friends, have commented on how it’s gotten worse. We’re a bit more careful about where we go. We’re an easy target nowadays.”

The increase in racially and religiously aggravated crimes have also been felt by EU nationals, many of whom have noticed heightened antagonism against them.

The report’s co-editor, Dr Roni Stauber, said this is explained by the fact that while most European countries have either a strong far-right presence, as in Eastern Europe, or a strong Muslim pro-Palestinian community, as in Western Europe. What is “very unique to Britain” is that is both are strong, and both are perpetrating attacks against Jews.

There’s been an increase in reports across the board since the EU referendum vote (yay “strong far-right presence”), and what a surprise that this includes antisemitic incidents! :/

How big a problem is it?

Reliable statistics are hard to come by. However we do know that hate crime is under-reported. In 2015-16, police forces in England and Wales recorded 62,518 hate crimes. But the Crime Survey for England and Wales7, which provides an alternative measure, estimated that 222,000 hate crimes took place in the same period. Under-reporting varies significantly between different strands: recent figures in England suggest one in two racist hate crimes are reported to the police; this drops to one in four for homophobic crimes, one in 10 for religiously motivated hate crimes, and one in 19 for disability hate crimes.

Even when crimes are reported, they are not always prosecuted. In Northern Ireland, 1,614 incidents of hate crime were recorded by the police in 2016-17, but just 16 per cent have recorded ‘crime outcomes’, such as prosecution or police warning. Only 18 per cent of recorded racist hate crimes in
Northern Ireland resulted in a prosecution, police warning or other outcome8. Crown Prosecution Service figures reveal a similar picture in England and Wales, with the police service referring just 21 per cent for charging in 2015-16.

The states which had the highest number of incidents in 2016 and the first quarter of 2017 were:

  • California (211 in 2016; 87 in first quarter 2017)
  • New York (199; 97)
  • New Jersey (157; 24)
  • Florida (137; 41)
  • Massachusetts (125; 38)

These states also have some of the largest Jewish populations in the nation.

Make no mistake about this: she has been murdered. There are no two ways about this. I have chosen not to mention the man in these posts because his name does not deserve to be held in the same space as Barbara’s; his name has already been published and is available in articles and in the notes. 

His charges have not been rectified to reflect the true nature of the crime, which itself has not yet been identified as a hate crime by police. I do not know if it ever will be.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is known for its lack of accountability to the indigenous community here in Thunder Bay. Sadly, and perhaps unsurprisingly, incidents of white people throwing objects and yelling racial slurs at walking indigenous people is not uncommon here in this city. It happens on a regular basis, and is the reality for many indigenous people living in urban settings. 

The police do not take any of it, in any measure, seriously. Their inaction continues to prove this.

So, we’ve apparently got a bunch of lovely young men who are increasingly attacking each other with a variety of corrosive household chemicals instead of knives now, largely clustered in East London. (We live in the #4 borough for number of attacks.) How amazing that the same people might also turn that onto other tempting targets! 😐

There was a similar case not that far from us late last year, which I didn’t see anything about until it came up in that first link. Where a gang of 14 shitty racist kids decided to attack some man who was just delivering pizza.

Not that surprising that these Islamophobic attacks would pick up along with all the rest recently, but the whole situation is very disturbing.

(Also, with the dispensing method of choice apparently being squirty sports type bottles, presumably for more coverage with the amount of liquid? I’m feeling almost lucky that one asshole only squirted water on me out of a car, I guess it was last summer. Just glad at the time that it was water and not, say, urine :/ I’m not Muslim, but I do attract shit like that here. And it seems much more common than even 5 years ago. Again, that’s not even as a member of any groups targeted nearly as heavily, and I can only imagine what that might be like.)

Also another case where I wish I thought the proposals to control legal sales of drain cleaner, etc. would actually do any practical good. When we’re dealing with the types of people who are totally willing to squirt somebody’s face full of drain cleaner, there are some way bigger problems there than the tool of choice. Horrifying as that particular tool may be. It’s a mess.

Guys the situation is slowly getting worse for Asians and Muslims in the East london area. There are more and more acid attacks happening. God forbid it ever happens to any of you, or that you have to witness it. But if you do make sure to remove clothing and jewellery that made contact with acid and make sure to flush the skin out with water. Keep pouring water as the pain can last up to thirty to forty minutes.
Keep windows closed when driving, boys are driving up in mopeds and throwing acid into cars. Be wary of “delivery men” as people have donned these looks to throw acid on people and then runaway. Do not open your doors to any random strangers, its not safe.

I thought we just got over all this madness with people mowing down Muslims coming out of mosques, but now all of this starts. Not to mention the rise in random attacks. A lady was beat up in the local park by a drunk white man. A young girl had raw bacon stuffed in her face because she, to him was “muslim scum.” My cousin got beaten up on his doorstep by three boys. Honestly, I’m not one to cower in fear, its not me. But these recent attacks have really shook me. Dont argue with people when driving, don’t be provoked by random people shouting slurs. I feel like all I am saying these days to everyone is to be safe, but its real, its on our doorstep. Take all the precautions you can, dont walk alone at night. Keep water in your car at all times for emergencies. Keep your windows up. Do not open the door for just anyone. Please be safe yall, and make dua for those who were victims in such attacks…

The Muslim community is mourning the passing of Nabra, a 17 year old young woman from Sterling, VA. Nabra was beaten to death with a baseball bat and left in a pond after going missing while walking to a mosque with her friends. Hate crime against Muslim Americans is at its highest point with more than 67% increase since 2016. Nabra is another example of the escalating violence towards Muslims Americans. Activists gathered at Union Square to hold a vigil for Nabra and her family and to stand against violence against Muslim Americans.
