Reminded by seeing some colonial history mentioned, with Maryland getting split off from Virginia. Oddly enough there’s a Maryland not too far from us where the naming went the opposite way from what you might expect.
From Wikipedia (not even trying to add all the links on mobile):
Maryland’s earliest known recorded appearance is on a map of Essex published by J. Oliver in 1696, where it is marked as ‘Maryland Point’. The name originated with a rich local merchant who bought land and built in the area having returned from the American colony of Maryland (itself named for Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I). London’s Maryland is therefore an unusual example of a place in Britain named after an American location, rather than vice versa.
Various attempts have been made to identify the merchant. The most likely candidate seems to be Richard Lee[1] (1617-1664, great-great-grandfather of Confederate General Robert E. Lee), who emigrated to Virginia around 1640. His estate there included land on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, near a place known as Maryland Point (later to be the site of the Maryland Point Light). On returning to England in 1658, Lee bought land in Stratford, and in 1662 was recorded as owning a large house there.
Somewhat interesting connection, but yeah. Can’t say it’s that surprising that the descendant of someone who apparently made a fortune as a fairly early planter ended up a Confederate general 200+ years later.
Lee was a lawyer, planter, soldier, politician, and Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses.
By the time of his death, Lee was the largest landholder in Virginia, with 13,000 acres and perhaps the richest man in Virginia.
That was after he decided to move to London, of course. Obviously not all of his family went with him, more’s the pity.
(Also, the London one is pronounced “Mary-land”, like Disneyland but with a very Catholic theme. Still a bit disconcerting, no matter how many times I hear it. Which would be more than a few, with Maryland on the train line between us and London proper.)
Hurriyet Daily News reports that Albayrak had been hired to photograph the July 5th wedding at Turgut Özal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya. On the day of, when he noticed that the bride-to-be didn’t look like an adult, he asked the groom her age and learned that she was only 15.
“The groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone,” Albayrak tells the Daily News. “I saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. She’s a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.”
Albayrak then reportedly refused to continue as the wedding photographer and attempted to stop the wedding.
The argument soon turned physical when the groom attacked him as he was attempting to leave, Albayrak says. The photographer ended up breaking the client’s nose in the fight, according to local reports.
Albayrak confirmed the reports in a Facebook post, which has been met with widespread approval, attracting thousands of Likes and hundreds of overwhelmingly positive comments.
“I wish this had never happened, but it did,” Albayrak writes. “And if you were to ask me if I’d do the same thing again, I’d say ‘yes.’ Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.”
The legal minimum age for marriage in Turkey is 18-years-old for both sexes, and child marriage is punishable by imprisonment for men who marry underage girls. Despite being outlawed, however, child marriage is still prevalent in the country and remains a controversial political issue.
btw – let’s remind ourselves, americans, that unlike turkey, in the US the legal minimum age for marriage is only 18 in two states. in alabama, you can be married as young as fourteen years old if you have “parental permission”. in california, you can get married under 18 if you go to counseling, have a parent with you when you apply for the marriage license, and appear before a judge. in some states, there isn’t even a specific minimum age for marriage.
the minimum marriage age for girls in new hampshire is 13 years old.
child marriage is not an “over there” problem, it happens right here, legally. any one of us might find ourselves called upon to break somebody’s nose if we encounter something like this occurring. we also have a responsibility to support groups and laws trying to end child marriage in this country.
Virginia previously allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to marry with “parental consent” (with no process in place to ensure it’s not actually “parental coercion”) and allowed younger children to wed with such “consent” if they were pregnant or had a child. (X)
Now, the only exception is 16-17 year old court emancipated minors, hopefully making the parental coercion factor far less relevant.
New Jersey and Delaware have also apparently passed new legislation changing the marriage age to 18 with no exceptions, just last month (June 2018). Presmably giving the 48 states figure.
By far the best part of Assassin’s Creed III is the fact that you can chase down the founding fathers and just harangue them, just bully those slaveowning nerds and shove them around a bit.
Here we see the guy on the $1 bill kneeling and crying because a stronger boy pushed him
George Washington didn’t own slaves. He inherited slaves but set them free because he saw slavery as inhuman.
George Washington inherited some of his slaves from Martha’s first marriage, but owned over 100 of his own by the end of his life. He did not give any indication during his life that he saw slavery as inhuman and, in fact, was pretty enthusiastic about the practice of holding humans prisoner and putting them to work in a forced labor camp.
When he needed new slaves, he known to ask for “Six or more n*****s… males… well-grown lads… healthy, and none of them addicted to running away.” (Letter from George Washington to John Francis Mercer, November 6 1786)
There was also his practice of dealing with “misbehaving” or “unruly” slaves was to ship them off to an even more brutal plantation in the Caribbean in exchange for various luxury foods and drinks. Like in 1766, when he sent an “unruly” slave named Tom to the West Indies in exchange for barrels of molasses and rum, or then again in 1791 when he shipped of an unnamed “misbehaving fellow” in exchange for “one pipe and quarter cask of wine.”
Now, you’re partially right on one thing. He did set his slaves free. In his will. You know, when he was dead and therefore done exploiting them. Couldn’t be bothered to do it while he was alive and stood to lose something from, you know, releasing the inmates of his forced labor camp, but he did technically allow SOME OF them to go free when he was no longer alive to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
You might be thinking of Ben Franklin, who actually did set his slaves free and take up the cause of abolition because he thought the institution of slavery was abhorrent, but this was also something that made him incredibly unpopular, especially with enthusiastic slaveowners like Washington and Jefferson.
Oh, and in reference to your tags. Temple University, class of 2014. Bachelor’s in History. During my years there, I specialized in American history and specifically built my curriculum to cover race relations in detail. The subject area of my capstone class was the American Revolution. If you’re going to accuse someone of skimping on research and not paying attention in history class, maybe don’t pick someone who just came off of five years of history class culminating in a final intensive course on this exact subject when you couldn’t even be bothered to google it.
they literally have the slave quarters on display at Mt Vernon…
George Washington didn’t own slaves he just ~inherited~ them!!
???? What?
Also, at least as relevant to that game featuring Connor/Ratohnhake:ton? George Washington’s War on Native America. In which he personally tried to wipe out the Iroquois League.
Though, those are not totally separate issues. As quoted from another source through the link (bolding added):
He insisted in killing as many Indians as possible without taking into account age or sex. The survivors were to be given as agricultural slaves to the colonists who deserved them “Destroying not only the men but the settlements and the plantations is very important. All sown fields must be destroyed and new plantations and harvests must be prevented. What lead can not do will be done by hunger and winter.”
George’s own words. So obviously opposed to the idea of slavery… 😩
The first British settlement of the “New World” (an extension King James I) was on its last leg when John Rolfe’s kidnapped-marriage to Pocahontas resulted in the ability to plant tobacco and create mercantile that resulted in all sorts of continued settler-plunder.
Any person who uses obscene, vulgar, profane, lewd, lascivious, or indecent language, or makes any suggestion or proposal of an obscene nature, or threatens any illegal or immoral act with the intent to coerce, intimidate, or harass any person, over any telephone or citizens band radio, in this Commonwealth, is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.
(From the relevant Code of Virginia section.)
Guys, why would you choose the weird phone harassment statute when the virginia code also currently makes it illegal to swear in public? O.o
§ 18.2-388. Profane swearing and intoxication in public; penalty; transportation of public inebriates to detoxification center.
If any person profanely curses or swears or is intoxicated in public, whether such intoxication results from alcohol, narcotic drug or other intoxicant or drug of whatever nature, he shall be deemed guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor.
