These new corys are still young and small enough that it’s difficult to tell the sexes apart, but the last water change got some of them pretty frisky!
That little male bronze one, starting off to the left here, has kept annoying all the ladies today. Including the ‘Black Venezuela’ C. schultzei, even though the two groups haven’t been corying around together as much as I had hoped. No sign of eggs yet, but that one is certainly trying his best 😉
(Please ignore the bad zoom attempt near the end. I’m not set up to do editing right now.)
Mostly got a quick video because it was funny enough to watch. The corys are goofs anyway.
These little guys seem to be healthy and happy so far, at least. *fingers crossed* They and the male Endlers can probably join the other corys in the bigger tank after another week or so. Considered moving them out of quarantine sooner, but better safe and all that.
The fry have been growing well, and they’re not really acting concerned about any of the larger fish anymore. A couple of the new bronze corys have also figured out that they can find some extra food at the surface, and I’m not sure that will ever stop being hilarious to watch. (Water cloudiness is from a water change with ferts added shortly before.)
Currently plotting another trip to Tranquility Aquatics via the Sainsbury’s just down the street from there, since it should work better for the fish in that order.
Not necessarily so much for me, with the fish shop closing two hours earlier than the other store location and needing to lug groceries around for longer. But, I imagine they’d be stressed enough by getting netted and tied up in bags without riding around in a shopping cart too 😨 Only planning to pick up a few urgent items (famous last words), but still.
It’s cooled down enough today that I might take along an insulated bag just to be safe. It should only be maybe 10-15 minutes home, but those bags don’t have much water to hold the temperature stable and I don’t necessarily trust the buses.
It’s also pouring rain, and I would probably skip that grocery run otherwise. Out of a few basics like GF bread and really need to make a pharmacy stop, but still. More inclined to try to muster the spoons and go out in the rain with the prospect of new fish *wry smile*
Well, I did manage to make it out to both places. And I don’t think I even forgot anything super important this time *fingers crossed*
That was pretty stressful, especially on the way home just as rush hour was getting rolling in the direction I was heading–with no headphones along because I’m a Muppet 😳 I was already kinda overloaded from the multiple stops and bus rides.
But, I made it home and the new corys are floating in the tank for temperature adjustment now. Very glad I did get that done, though. That was actually the first time in longer than I care to think about that I’ve gotten out on the bus for grocery shopping, and now I have a few things quicker without setting up a delivery.
Sandwich time pretty soon, I imagine, now that there’s more bread.

Those corys are small enough, and the water parameters are holding up well enough with the fish load, that I’m tempted to try to go back and get a few more of each kind out of the same tanks.
Everyone seems to be settling in well and acting happy enough today, but the two different cory species haven’t been shoaling around together much. They might be happier with some more friends, and they wouldn’t be overcrowded even in the smaller quarantine tank here. The more the merrier, and all that.
Stills really were not working that well, especially with a phone camera and the Endlers zipping around like they do.
But, here’s a short video of the new fish trying to get settled into quarantine, after the lights went on earlier. It didn’t want to upload straight over here again, explaining the delay.
(Complete with ugly old substrate I probably should have replaced when I redid the tank recently, but that was more hassle than I wanted right then. It looked better to me when I set the tank up in 2005, that’s for sure. Plus loads of drip marks on the glass, because London liquid chalk.)
What I came home with today:
• 3 more bronze corys, which look miniscule compared to the Grumpy Old Bronze Lady fish they’re eventually intended to keep company.
• 3 tiny ‘Venezuela Black’ corys, because they were so cute and seemed in great shape. (Spoiler: They’re no connection to the actual Corydoras venezuelanus, but a color variation of C. schultzei bred in Germany. Gotta love common trade names 🙄 Cuties regardless.)
• Two pairs of the impulse Endler’s livebearers, because I really like livebearers and haven’t kept those yet. (More like Approximately Endlers, but hey.) I considered trying to get all males instead of an endless supply with obviously already gravid females too, but they only had pricing for pairs listed. That was more an excuse than anything else, and worst case some LFS would probably be happy for any overflow later.
For scale: the colorful male Endlers are maybe an inch long. Those are definitely still little baby corys with a lot of growing to do.
The LFS didn’t have any C. trilineatus like I was hoping to get more of, but so far I really like the black ones. Hoping the remaining C. trilineatus here will be happy enough to shoal with them anyway. *fingers crossed* But, they seemed fine trying to hang out with the bronze ones, it’s just Grumpy Old Bronze Lady who wanted very little to do with them.
I didn’t want to put too many fish into that 60L/15G tank repurposed for quarantine starting out. Plus the corys were priced in trios, and 6 of each seemed like a bit much right now. If we need more corys to get a happy shoal going, I can go back after more later. That would be a terrible shame 😉
Letting them all get settled in without me staring at them while I try to get supper together, and then they can have a feeding too. May try to get some more video then.
“That weirdo keeps staring at us!”
Before and after they went into the quarantine tank, with the lights still off.
I accidentally let the bags tip over to stress them more just before they got to come out 😦 But, they all seem to be settling in fine so far *fingers crossed*
Those were the best still shots I could get, especially with the lights off. So I gave up on that.
