As an adult, I can quite literally do whatever I want to, but I always end up wanting to just go home.

All the UK Trump protests are really depressing to me. Like, so much angry creative & rebellious energy has gone into something that effectively functions as state propaganda – the implication of this scathing attitude towards Trump’s policies is that ours are noticeably better and I feel like honestly half the reason why people have showed up for this stuff is like, a weird sense of nationalism.
When your hair is wavy/curly sometimes there is a fine line between “messy romantic waves” and “evil witch who lives in the woods.”
When your hair is fine and straight there’s a fine line between “sleek and elegant” and “weasel dipped in grease”
When you’re hair is thick there’s a fine line between “gorgeous vibrant bounce” and “holy fuck it’s Hagrid”

America: Where you can shot and maimed in a mass shooting.
Then get sued for it.
I thought this article was a joke at first.
This is wild….
I think the Onion’s just given up.
My jaw literally dropped. Then I googled in sheer disbelief. It’s actually true.
Are you alright America?

Survivors and victims’ families are suing MGM for allowing a guest to sneak weapons into one of their hotels and open fire on nearby concert goers. MGM is countersuing saying it took reasonable measures to prevent such an occurence, such as having its employees take anti-terrorism training. IMHO, the original lawsuit seeks to make a third party, MGM, liable for actions a guest took, likely because MGM has deep pockets. So, what do YOU think MGM actually did wrong? Should all hotels x-ray you and your bags everytime you walk into a hotel? How about motels where doors open to courtyards, balconies, and parking lots? How about bed and breakfast inns? Campgrounds? RV parks? Lodges? Hostels? Shelters? Keep thinking. School districts? Uber drivers? Bus and taxi companies? Restaurants? Every place of employment? Beaches? Parks?
i’ve seen a lot of people concerned about questioning kids lately.
lots of people who were concerned that young girls might identify as nonbinary, for example, because of internalized misogyny. or young gay people who might identify as ace or aro, because of internalized homophobia.
i honestly have a lot of sympathy for people who mis-identify themselves. it’s something that most of us have struggled with at least once before realizing that we aren’t straight or aren’t cis. many of us have struggled with it twice, three times, or a dozen times!
it’s not fun to realize you were wrong. it’s not fun to live one way, feeling wrong and lost and strange and broken, because you wrongly believed that that must be who you are.
but. mis-identification is not caused by having “too many” options.
i understand this concern. i really do. I have no doubt that those examples i mentioned above do happen, very often. but it’s not really any different than my experience, and i would not blame it on any other person but myself. i was a “tomboy” little girl, i was gender nonconforming, i was a trans guy, i was a bi chick, i was a gay guy.
the way i choose to identify is ultimately up to me. i went through the trials of finding my identity in the haystack like everyone else.
i care a lot about the people who mis-identify, and i’d like to offer them support. this support does not mean that the groups that they mis-identified with are wrong or evil for allowing this person into their ranks. it means spreading the message that mis-identifying is okay! that it’s okay to change your labels as much as you want, and to try out different identities, and to change your mind or change over time. THAT is how you support a confused, questioning person.
try to remember that for every confused gay kid who thought they were ace because they couldn’t cope with the idea that they were gay, there was also a confused little ace kid who thought they were gay because they couldn’t cope with the idea that they were just “broken”.
try to remember that for every young girl who has been taught to hate femininity and herself, there is also a trans or nonbinary kid who is constantly being told “no, you HAVE to be a girl. there is no other option.”
we will make mistakes. everyone mis-labels themself. practically no one just knows themself without any effort – it’s a process of self-discovery, and it is painful and complicated. and we should be helping each other.
mis-identification happens when someone doesn’t know all of the options that exist. it happens because of stereotypes, because of bigotry, because of societal pressure and peer pressure and and and.
it is too complicated to blame on one thing. and you don’t know another person better than they know themself. assuming that is dangerous.
present all of the options to someone who is questioning instead of disguising, denying, or slandering some options rather than others. knowledge is power. that questioning person should be well-equipped to think, and try, and get to know themself, without you adding even more prejudice to the list.
concern is one thing, but pushing other people to identify one way instead of another because YOU think it’s right or better (or more likely!) is another thing entirely.
be careful. be kind. and support that questioning person no matter what they end up identifying as.
I just want to cry when I hear people talking about how kids have “too many” options these days, because – honestly –
– honestly –
Do you know how much I would have given when I was a teenager to know that non-binary was even an option? Do you know how many years of confusion and upset and frustration it would have saved, how much time desperately trying to fit into a form of womanhood that wasn’t for me, because it wasn’t what I was, if I could have just had the idea of non-binary genders as an option? If I’d had that language, how much pain and misery I would have avoided?
I don’t honestly know how different my life would be if I would have known at sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, when I was saying ‘I want a dimmer switch for my gender, I’m somewhere on the dimmer switch’ because I didn’t have the words and the only options I knew were man/woman. On/off. One/zero. That’s all I knew.
Look, I genuinely don’t care if people call themselves galaxygender or faekingender. To me there’s no such thing as a ‘fake’ gender, because it’s all, in the end, about relating to yourself. About understanding yourself. And if you go through sixteen genders with names that sound ridiculous to everyone else and you finally say ‘you know, actually, it’s fine, I’m a woman,’ then that’s okay. And if you go through three genders and then decide you are something that sounds absurd to everyone else, that’s fine too.
I am just so fucking happy that the language exists, and that kids are having these discussions, and really able to think about their gender and how they relate to it and what it means to them. I would have given so much to be able to have those discussions. It would have saved me so much pain to know it was even an option.
I’m not shitting on clueless Western European liberals as some sort of embarrassed whataboutism, btw, but because this willful obliviousness to any problems that might challenge the idea that western Europe is this unique gem of liberalism, equality, and peace (OK, sure, there might be problems, but they’re not that bad) hurts people who endure racism/sexism/homophobia, and also absolutely helps fascists camouflage their actions as well as recruit, especially among more “normie” people
“This premise is just [insert Terry Pratchett story here], because [thing that’s actually quite common in fantasy literature, including the particular source material the cited Terry Pratchett story is openly parodying, which I’m totally unaware of because I have literally no exposure to fantasy literature outside of Terry Pratchett stories].”
(And don’t get me wrong – I love Pratchett’s work, and I have
everything he ever published in hardcopy. The Pratchett fandom,
on the other hand, is often less endearing, particularly with respect
to the perennial habit of
certain segments of said fandom to go about loudly declaring that things
are derivative of Pratchett’s work owing to the presence of shared elements
that Pratchett himself unashamedly lifted from other sources, typically
for the purpose of parody. In many cases, they’ll even insist that
things that entirely pre-date Pratchett’s body of work are somehow
ripping him off, which is just baffling – like, you’d think such hardcore fans would at least be aware of the period during
which their idol wrote!)I actually love reading Pratchett specifically because it’s clear that every other thing on the page is a parody of something — only I’ve never encountered the original. It’s fun to guess how the unsuberted version might have gone, and just how much Terry was done with it.
The generational divide isn’t real and I’m so tired of every liberal acting like its the cause of division in the US…like most baby boomers are poor. Impoverished even. There are disgustingly rich Millenials. the average baby boomers life was ruined by the housing crash and recession and honestly if your parents aren’t going to be working until their late 60s or even 70s so they can afford to survive you’re probably too wealthy to be in touch with the rest of us but pretend to be working class online. i know one person in the baby boomer age range that doesn’t think its impossible for anyone to survive in this economy. also you all keep lumping literal 80 year olds in with baby boomers and its absolutely wild. just log off
My parents are in their sixties and I can bet you money they didn’t have the resources to fuck the future economy, but they sure as shit felt the housing crash and the Great Recession.
My 90yo grandmother tries to live on ~$500 each month from social security (because my grandfather didn’t like paying taxes but that’s a-whole-nother tirade). When was she destroying the economy: when she was floor manager at RCA or managing the books for my grandfather’s multiple small business?
It has always been the same small number of people, with more money than the rest of the earth put together, who have been fucking things up for everyone.
The divide is not by age it is by income.

I mean…
I’ve literally never seen the people who are mad about Russian interference being like “no but it’s totally ok that WE meddle with OTHER countries’ elections”.
That’s different people. There’s probably a few actual hypocrites but really, like, most of us are of the opinion that we should also mind our own damn business and butt out of other countries’ internal affairs.
the russia interference mavins may not be pro meddling, but theyve never protested particularly hard in the past. by and large, the left has lead the charge against american meddling in other countries elections, and by and large the left is more concerned now with voter suppression by the GOP, broken promises and primary rigging by the democrats, and the new prominence of american nazis, and less so with russian meddling.
“never protested particularly hard”
Yes, it’s difficult to protest particularly hard about things that one is not aware are happening. I don’t know if you know this, but, the American education system is not particularly good and also the American media doesn’t tend to report much on things like “hey our government is secretly meddling in another country’s shit”. They’d rather run sensationalized clickbait about “could your front door KILL YOU? Stay tuned for our special report!” (spoilers: technically yes, your front door could kill you, but it’s really unlikely and you probably should not actually be very concerned).
And while being thoroughly informed about world current events is an admirable goal, lots of us have too many personal problems taking up our brainpower to do a very good job at keeping up on that.Yeah, I’m also more concerned about those things you listed than with “Russia interfered”. However, proving that there was deliberate collusion with Russian bullshit to get Trump elected might end up being the thing that gets him and his cabinet thrown out FASTEST, in which case that would be a net good against at least voter suppression by the GOP and the nazi resurgence – they’re emboldened because “their guy” won; it makes sense that it would be a demoralizing blow to them to get him impeached and removed. Doesn’t mean the problems would all magically be solved, but it’d sure be a solid step towards a less shitty future.
Not only is diet talk harmful and stigmatizing- it is incredibly boring.

This post is not brought to you by Kink. This post brought to you by good ideas everyone can enjoy.
man i’ve been on so many diets for my digestive issues and food intolerances and when people find out the boredom and disinterest is palpable. all i get from them is pity and contempt. so why is it when someone’s on a diet for weight loss they think he whole world wants to know and no one tells them any different?
