Snail Reviews

fourteen–steps:

In which I review all the types of snails I’ve kept in an incredibly biased but also incredibly accurate manner:

Zebra Nerite – Neritina natalensis

A nice stripy friend, good Aesthetic™. Generally inoffensive and polite. But unfortunately also a fucking idiot who climbs out of the (covered!!!) tank and reappears dead, in the filter of a different tank six feet away two months later.

What a shame, the poor groom’s bride is a goddamn moron

2/5 stars for lack of foresight and general tomfoolery

Red Racer NeriteVittina waigiensis

PRETTY. Mostly well behaved. Likes to chill out upside down in the top corner a lot which is weird but hey to each their own. Haven’t had these guys all that long but they’re proving to be good buddies.

Solid 4.2/5 stars, extra points given cause they’re fucking stunning. This one is named Rose and I love her :3

Ishimaki Smooth NeriteClithon retropictus

Smoooooooth boys awwww yeah. Disgraceful algae eaters, truly. Leave these pathetic little halfhearted trails around, all dotted with eggs because they’re horny little boogers too. So they make as much mess as they clean. But still v smooth and v reliable, highly trustworthy. Like that one weird flaky stoner friend who you still somehow trust with your life and limb.

3.7/5 stars y’all are good people

Bladder SnailPhysidae sp.

Perfect. Flawless. Left handed! Which I learned today is unusual for snails. Gets an unfairly bad rap in the aquarium world, I adore these little kids so much. They’re sparkly and speedy have little tiny smooshy faces.

68/10 have done nothing wrong I would Die for them

Pond SnailLymnaea sp.

Actually different from bladder snails which I also learned today. I also seem to have multiple species in my tank because some of mine are lefties and some are righties.

27/12 stars I hope they’re all having a good day and I would like to give them each a kiss

Mini Ramshorn SnailPlanorbis sp.

Ok ok I’ll admit I was a hypocrite and I didn’t like these for a while. I still kinda don’t love them as much as the pondies. But they’ve grown on me. Itty bitty, not as aesthetically pleasing, but they try their best and I respect that. We live in peace together.

3.5/5 stars but like, it’s not you it’s me                         (x)

Marbled Limpet – Septoria porcellana

Oh boy we have a rocky relationship, these limpets and I. One of these little motherfUCKERS managed to get into the motor housing of my quietflow last month and oh wow I’ve never been so angry at a mollusk in my LIFE. Just pure, burning fury. My god. And it wasn’t a fluke like the others were obviously more than interested in doing the exact same thing. Also make prodigious amounts of poop, I’m talking out-shitting three goldfish like piles of snail poop. Not suited to the small, poorly filtered tank.

BUT they are some of the best algae cleaners I’ve ever seen. Just three of them have almost cleared the walls of my 150 gallon in about two weeks which is pretty incredible.

Uhhhhhhhh ignore the racer nerite shhhhh

±3/5 stars I’m conflicted

Collected from the Egyptian desert in March of 1846, the Helix desertorum specimen was sent to the British Museum, where scientists thought it had expired in transit. It was glued to a cardboard display card shortly after.

One day four years later, curators noticed something strange about their catatonic mollusk: the shell seemed to have moved from its glued position and a trail of discoloration followed it.

Archivists removed it from the card to give it a bath, with a suspicion the snail might have in fact been slumbering.

After just a few minutes of exposure to moisture, the snail’s head poked from its shell and surveyed its new home with four eye stalks.

As the snail adjusted to active life again, it became a minor celebrity and sat for a portrait by the museum’s zoological artist for inclusion in a book on mollusks, seen below:
