I am willing to say that mostly they are just being obstructionist… but those first two… for them this was personal.
They do have a reason they voted against the bill change. It’s not a good reason, to be clear, but it is a justification not rooted in approval of bestiality.
Here’s the thing: bestiality is already illegal in Louisiana.
This new bill definitely strengthens the law, elaborates on what is illegal conduct (such as the procuring of animals for sexual purposes), and…and here’s the kicker…
Separates out the bestiality-is-illegal section of the law from the sodomy-is-illegal section. They used to be in the same paragraph, now the sodomy-is-illegal paragraph stands alone and a whole new paragraph (with subparagraphs) is there for bestiality.
To be clear, the sodomy-is-illegal parts themselves are null and void and have been since 2003 (Lawrence v. Texas, US Supreme Court). But they’re still on the books.
These ten Republicans are concerned that separating out the bestiality parts from the sodomy parts will make it easier to clean up and eliminate the sodomy provision altogether, and they don’t want to do that. (Again, that would only matter if Lawrence was invalidated somehow. But, well, they could believe that’s possible, too.)
So, yeah. They don’t want to change the law to expand on the illegality of bestiality specifically because that would make it feasible for a future change in law to eliminate a nonfunctional, homophobic section.
That makes it worse, somehow.
I mean if they were actively into fucking animals I could sort of squint and understand their intentions, as disgusted as I’d be. Your hobby is terrible but at least you’re on record for.. horse fucking? Go you.
But this? It’s just being shitty to their constituents for no reason at all.
Also, good job handing the opposition “he voted in favor of horse fucking” for the next election. I seriously want to see some campaign ads featuring this vote.
A million or more could march against the President when he visits in February.
Donald Trump’s visit is going ahead – and now we have a date.
In the face of overwhelming calls for it to be cancelled, the Prime
Minister is ploughing ahead with plans to welcome the disgraced US
President – despite him promoting far-right groups in the UK and beyond.
After (presumably disgruntled) sources leaked the date of the trip,
anti-racism campaigners are now planning what they hope will be among
the biggest demonstrations in British history, set to rival the anti-war
protests of the early 2000s.
The demonstrations will converge on the US Embassy and 10 Downing Street.
Put it in your diaries: the 26th-27th February 2018.
According to reports in the Sunday Times, which broke the story, Theresa May has been somewhat, ahem, economical with the truth:
“Despite claims by Theresa May that no date has been set
for the US president’s first visit to the UK since entering the White
House, the trip has been in the diary for at least 10 days, according to
those familiar with the plans.
“The timing of the visit, which is expected to coincide with the
opening of the new US embassy in London, remains unchanged despite last
week’s diplomatic row.”
A million or more people could join the demonstration, according to organisers.
That figure doesn’t seem impossible, given that nearly two million people signed the petition calling for Trump’s proposed visit to be downgraded.
The Stop Trump group said on Facebook:
“If Donald Trump attempts to sneak into the UK to open
the US Embassy on 26/27th February 2018 and also pop into see Theresa
May at Downing Street – he will be met by a million of us attempting a
citizens arrest of him for incitement to racial hatred.”
Owen Jones launched the demonstration on Twitter:
DROP WHAT YOU’RE DOING: Donald Trump is set to
come to Britain on *26th/27th February*. Let’s make this the biggest
demonstration in British history. Sign up here NOW: https://t.co/zK8jERfOE2pic.twitter.com/rVdFP8sNso
Left Foot Forward will be covering plans for the protest over the coming months. Watch this space.
Now let’s make this the biggest protest in Britain’s history. Join the Facebook event here, and see you on the streets…
Angela Rayner, the shadow education secretary, said the refusal to allow a binding vote on tuition fees had created a constitutional crisis. She said: “The government had no mandate to increase fees to begin with and if they do not now reverse the fee hike they will be defying the will of parliament in blatant disregard for our democracy”.
Much of the UK’s system of laws and “unwritten constitution” derives from EU law, so with Brexit inexorably advancing, the UK has to pass a whole raft of parallel legislation that will replace the EU laws with UK versions, lest there be a “legal black hole” the day after Brexit.
But it’s not as simple as crossing out “EU” and inserting “UK” in existing legislation. The “Great Repeal Bill” is the largest piece of legislation ever put before Parliament, which has to not only translate the rules into UK legislation – it also has to set out which UK (not EU) institutions are in charge of enforcing those rules and what enforcement powers they’ll have.
There’s no time to make such a piece of legislation complete (at least, not according to Theresa May and her government). Instead, the government plans to rely on “Henry VIII clauses” that allow minister to just make up laws, without getting them voted in by Parliament. In effect, the Tories are asking Parliament to write them a blank cheque whose details they can fill in later.
At stake are “a mindboggling array of laws, from human rights and environmental protections through to financial regulation and consumer law.”
Following a wave of high-profile resignation from Trump’s two primary CEO councils, Trump tweeted Wednesday he was dissolving both the American Manufacturing Council and the Strategic and Policy Forum.
“Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both,” he tweeted. “Thank you all!
The dissolution of the two councils deals a major blow to Trump’s mandate as a leader who would use his business acumen to steer the nation toward economic prosperity. Read more (8/16/17 2:05 PM)
Though Trump tweeted that the decision to disband the groups was his, the Wall Street Journal reported that the industry leaders had chosen to disband before the president’s tweet.
According to the Journal, Stephen A. Schwarzman, Blackstone Group LP Chief Executive and leader of Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum, call the president on Wednesday to tell him the group was disbanding. Read more (8/16/17 4 PM)
