The other part of the picture is that, once a group has “we try to hurt our enemies’ feelings” as a norm, it will attract people who want to do that, whether they share the groups’ values or not. Lots and lots of people choose political affiliations based on which ones let them behave the way they want to behave; a cost of tolerating lots of behavior from ‘your side’ is that you get a lot of people who are there for your tolerance.

I think women in authority who don’t understand neurodiverse children are particularly pissed when it’s a girl, because they expect certain behavior from boys and a girl acting that way, well hell, she isn’t being her gender the right way and that’s just a personal insult to women everywhere somehow.

sure, when my grandfather fought nazis and fascism he was “a hero” and “on the right side of history” but when i do it im “way too sensitive” and “no better than they are”

That’s because when our white grandparents fought Nazis, it was for fear of them taking power away from other white people.

White Europeans and Americans were explicitly fine with genocide and the ideologies that led to it – a great many people, including Churchill, vocally supported most of what the Nazis were doing. Their only fight with Nazis was to maintain sovereignty from takeover.

Today’s Nazi-fighters usually have a problem with white supremacy and the antisemitism and racism etc behind it – which most of our white grandparents didn’t see a problem with and neither do many white people today.

This is why so many people don’t see any reason to stop the Nazis now, or why many others think it’s purely a struggle for Democrats or other neoliberal parties in other countries who might lose political power if they gain traction. Many people don’t see Nazis as a real problem unless they threaten the political power of other white people.

White supremacist organizations and movements have been a life-threatening scourge for people of colour and Jewish people this entire time. It’s really important that we focus on that as the real threat, or we risk having the same myopic perspective as generations past.

This was a great addition to my original post so I’m reblogging it.

It’s also really annoying how white people are acting like the white nationalists marching in Charlottesville are all virgin nerds that nobody wants to fuck.

In actuality, half them boys are married with children and the other half have WHITE girlfriends who want their racist Nazi boyfriends to finally stop playing games and be committed to them.

White people acting like racist white men are losers that no woman wants to fuck invisibilizes white women’s perpetuation of and active participation in white supremacy.

This also allows white supremacy to be othered and implies that it is both caused by societal rejection and is itself a cause of rejection.

But it’s not, people don’t join the Klan cause they can’t get laid. And being a nazi don’t stop you from having a social life. Our culture does not punish racism and antisemitism, it produces it.

Also calling bigots virgins or bad at sex is gross.

“I don’t like someone so I’m gonna imply they can’t get any.” Grow the fuck up.

^^^^^^ This is definitely a white tactic.

This is why “humanizing your enemy” really means.

It’s not an attempt make
bigots cuddly or agreeable in the eyes of the public. It’s  to make sure you
know them when you see them – so you can recognize an attack coming
from inside the PTA barbecue, and defend yourself, rather than focusing
all your attention on weird-looking outsiders, and get taken by
surprise.

Painting these bigots as as sexually inferior is also harmful to people who are actually asexual and/or aromantic, because it often makes people suspicious that we are anti-social “loners,” and we might “crack” or be susceptible to fascist recruiting techniques.

(Writes the quintessential middle-aged “Bleeding-Heart Liberal,” who happens to be a virgin, and didn’t even know that there was a name for asexuality until a couple of years ago, but realized it fit her perfectly as soon as she did).
