Besides using the gas grill to cook just about anything you could possibly get decent results with? My mom used to snake a hotplate out onto the back porch with an extension cord in hot weather. Sometimes a crock pot. Anything to avoid putting extra heat into the house.

Lacking the outdoor summer kitchen setups like the old farmhouses šŸ˜… (Though I do know some people who will still set up an old stove on their covered porch, particularly for canning. Not so much in town, though.)

If this looks like it might last much longer here, I might actually pick up a hotplate. The one we had broke, and they can come in handy sometimes. If not so routinely in a British summer, thankfully.

Bit of fun this evening: I am seriously craving fried fish. And it’s still around 86F/30C, very possibly hotter inside the house Though, at least we have the ground floor 😵

(Not unusual weather back home, but I haven’t been anywhere with hotter summers for almost 10 years now. Passes for a heatwave here, and I am really not used to it anymore.)

This seems like an even more ridiculous conflict in the Land of Fish and Chips. With two chip shops within a few blocks.

But, I very specifically want the proper cornmeal-coated stuff. More importantly? At last check, nobody near us makes any that’s celiac friendly. I may not be nearly as wild about the deep-fried battered kind, but I would totally settle for that to avoid standing over a hot skillet right now.

Good thing there is at least a fan blowing through the kitchen šŸ™„

Impressed again at how sticky it can feel here, when it’s not actually that hot by the thermometer. We did get a brief thunderstorm earlier with a little rain for that extra humidity factor, but still.

It’s only 23C/73F out there right now, probably a few degrees higher in the house. So I’ve still got this lovely layer of sweat that’s not going anywhere 😳

Here’s hoping the small post office branch up the street really is open until 8 p.m., as indicated doing a search. I really need to get up there to collect a package, and it’s already after 6.

But, I’m also dizzy enough from the weather that it would be dumb to even try to walk it without at least getting some electrolyte drink in and resting a little while to see if that helps. Extra frustrating with it only being a few blocks, but still.

I mean, worst case I could wait until tomorrow, but it’s something I should really have today. The forecast is also pretty much the same again.

Executive Function Master here put off ordering more BCPs to stave off Cramp Hell until the last minute, and took the last one yesterday 😬 Definitely not going to complain about the shipping time from that pharmacy, but yeah. One missed/late dose is enough to cause problems, from experience. So I would really prefer not needing to do that.

The option of getting something urgent delivered for pickup at the post office is usually handy. Sure, it requires a stroll up there, but at least you don’t have to worry about getting a redelivery slip instead of the package.

Not a great situation in general, but doing my best here. I’m also pissed off again about even needing to self-treat this problem, out of pocket with the extra hassle involved. But, it’s better than the main alternative of spending at least a week pretty much incapacitated (and with looping suicidal thoughts) every month.

Getting worked up about the bigger situation there really isn’t going to help right now, but jfc you would think somebody would see that’s an unacceptable state of affairs for literally anyone. Even if they don’t dare mention the suicidal thoughts from pain.

Ambulance calls soar by 46 per cent as London swelters in 34.5C heat

As someone who has spent a lot of time in Arizona’s deserts, being in Europe this summer has been more amusing than it should be. ā€œHOW THE FUCK ARE YOU WEARING A SUIT?!ā€ ā€œPractice.ā€

I should not be as amused by that as I am, but I am totally nodding sagely right now.

Dear friends across the pond: stay cool and stay safe! I know you’re not used to this.

Yah. My first response to this was: Just 34C? Weak sauce.

A couple of posts going into exactly why these kinds of temperatures are a big deal:

https://very-british-life.tumblr.com/post/162006813012/psa-because-im-still-hearing-people-in-hot

Yeah, I also grew up in a climate where that’s not an unusual summer temperature. It is (record breakingly) unusual for Britain. Not only are people not accustomed to coping with heat, in a very humid generally chilly climate? Nothing is set up for hot weather. Nothing.

I hadn’t moved here yet, but I was actually visiting London during the 2003 heatwave which killed up to 2000 people in the UK. (Estimated at over 70,000 across Europe.) Coming straight from a much hotter summer climate maybe a week before that started, it was still almost unbelievable with how poorly things are set up for heat. I almost keeled over several times myself, including one occasion on a train platform. That was fun.

Like I said, that was with way more experience of hot weather than the vast majority of people living here, and after about a week away from it. So much for a little vacation from the summer back home šŸ™„

This most recent heatwave wasn’t that extreme, thankfully. (The worst also seems to be over now *fingers crossed*) But, there are reasons that more people needed emergency medical care, and some no doubt died from the heat again.

Also prompted by a couple of less respectful comments on this post. Not aimed at anyone here, but if your immediate response to a news story like this is ridicule? That’s just mean. Please show some modicum of decency, and keep it to yourself.

psa because i’m still hearing people in hot countries make fun of the uk for the ā€˜heat wave’

  • the uk is a very mild, humid place
  • sweat does not evaporate well in humid heat; the uk has very, very humid heat
  • meaning british people cannot cool down efficiently
  • also british people are adapted for cooler temperatures
  • people are literally expected to die in the next couple of days because of the heat wave
  • the news has put out health warnings because people will literally die because of the heat
  • shut up

oh yeah it’s also been pointed out in comments – we have no AC. no houses have AC. most buildings don’t have AC. most cars don’t have AC.Ā

WHY DON’T YOU HAVE AC WHAT

Our weather is typically inclined to be cold and rainy most of the year and our summers have typically peaked in the mid 20s. Our homes are built to cope with cold because it’s never been normal to have hot weather but climate change is making our summers hotter and hotter and nobody can afford to get air conditioning fitted or can’t because most of us rent and those that don’t often live in old buildings you can’t get it into. We don’t have AC but us in south east England wish we did šŸ˜‚
