1) Evaluate your discomfort. Hint: if you’d rather your friend risk extreme personal injury or death, it’s probably the latter, and you should probably just deal with that on your own.

I hate that we, as a country, are incapable of accepting responsibility and making amends for our terrible actions.

that went pretty much like this:

Day 1: “Yay! The Netherlands! Country of tolerance and gay rights!”

Day 2: “Huh, that person was really friendly to me and did like 15 micro-aggression, that was weird”

Day 4: “Waaaaaiiitt… why does this happen constantly? Are people messing with me? Am I imagining this? Do I just misunderstand their culture? The Netherlands can’t be this racist.”

Day 10: “Oh my god, I’m not imagining it, people actually are this racist and they think they’re not! WTF”

Day 12: “Holy crap, if I try to point out a micro-aggression people go from super friendly to hyper aggressive screaming in my face in about 5 seconds. And people I thought I could trust jump to their defense. What is this hellscape?”

Day 13: “Everything I thought I knew about the Netherlands is wrong. This place is so racist.”

Day 14: “Holy crap, is that a primary school teacher in black face?”

Yeah, the European side of tumblr likes to pretend they’re not racist or xenophobic or anti-black, when yall come from countries that let refugees drown at sea or try to ban headscarves.

Both the USA and Europe are built on the oppression of those deemed “other.”

Also, US-based Tumblr-users/activists/bloggers etc have a strong tendency to go “this wouldn’t happen in Europe”, “we should be more like Europe”, “we should copy the European model of healthcare/drugs/prisons/cops/etc”.

Which generally brushes over all the things that are terrible here and makes it very hard for people in Europe to make the oppression they are experiencing heard and acknowledged by an international audience.

So apparently my aunt cecelia (not really my aunt, just the best friend of my dads cousin, whomst we also call aunt) once married a dude referred to only as Florida Asshole. He was named such because he apparently left my aunt cecelia while she was in the hospital, stole all of their stuff, and fucked off to florida. Aunt cecelia then hired a p.i. to find him, as u do, and went down to florida with my dads cousin (who was going to florida for a work trip, and had no idea Florida Asshole was there). Apparently the p.i. told aunt cecelia which city the guy was in, but hadnt found the exact address yet, so ofc aunt cecelia did what any other able bodied half insane scorned person might. She went to a costume shop, bought a full nun costume, and went door to door under the assumption that she was collecting charity. (She did, in fact, donate everything she collected. This was an important fact to her). At one of the houses, she looked in the window and noticed an awful lot of furniture that used to be hers. So she, obviously, went to a gas station and bought several cans of gasoline, threw a molotov cocktail through the front window, and began pouring gasoline over the rest of the house. At this point, Florida Asshole came outside, recognized his ex wife looking like a renegade nun sent to punish him for his sins, and began beating her. The neighbors, seeing the strange new man beating a nun in his front yard while his house was on fire, did the only sensible thing in this story and called the police. Who promptly arrested Florida Asshole for assaulting a nun. Aunt cecelia did not get arrested, came clean to her best friend, and was immediately sent back to new york with a ticket bought under my other aunt’s name. We don’t know if she still has an arrest warrant out for her in florida, and that’s tonight’s Family Scandal!

At the next family gathering im gonna sit down, unsuspecting, w my bottle of rosé and the scandal is gonna be when my cousin whips out her phone and opens it up to this post and then everyone’s gonna scroll thru my blog and im gonna stick my head in the oven

We can’t just sit around cynically waiting for some imaginary “conservative generation” to “die off”. They won’t. It’s the liberals in every generation who die, much faster.

The baby boomers were one of the most radical generations this world has ever seen. Collectively, they advanced civil rights, women’s rights, freedom movements around the world, queer rights, almost the entire spectrum of human rights in the short course of less than fifteen years. The very generation that now gets decried by young people as conservative and holding back the world was once out protesting in the streets worldwide.

And getting shot for it.

Because it’s the ones who fight back who die first, then the ones who don’t fight back but are on the side of less power second.

The most radical and effective thing we could do in the next two decades is make sure that people live and have the leisure – and it is leisure for many – to engage in activism.

Just throwing this out there, xenophobia is definitely a thing in the UK, I was discriminated against to the point I had to move flats, because I spoke Welsh outside of Wales. But you can also be discriminated against for speaking Welsh in Wales if the people around you only speak English. In the UK, white people will discriminate against other white people if they’re not exactly like them.
