JIM HENSON USED THE KERMIT THE FROG PROTOTYPE TO MAKE ADS IN THE 1950′S-60′S?? THEY’RE ALL CURSED AND IM AFRAID TO WATCH THEM . GOD HELP ME

Uhmmmm….

@wackd

honestly you really need to see these things in motion because they’re buck wild

(also i’m gonna be That Guy and point out that wilkins wasn’t a prototype kermit as kermit already existed, although he was Kermit the Fucked Up Lizard Thing rather than Kermit the Frog at that point in time)

There is absolutely no attempt at seduction in these advertisements. We are given no reason to think this coffee is actually any good. The only motivation we are given to drink this coffee is fear.

THERE ARE MORE AND THEY GET WILDER

THERE ARE EVEN MORE AND THEY GET SO FUCKING THREATENING I AM GENUINELY STARTING TO FEAR FOR MY LIFE

@frogyell

DRINK WILKINS INSTANT COFFEE… OR DIE.

Kiwi!

rjzimmerman:

Couple of Kiwi items.

First, Smithsonian (link) tells us that the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute celebrated the hatching of a  kiwi. The kiwi is bird that is native to New Zealand’s North Island. The kiwi is endangered. Its populations have been declining because of predation by dogs and habitat destruction by human land developers. Here’s a photo of the baby kiwi:

Second, the Smithsonian article told me about a animation video that I hadn’t heard of or seen. It’s called Kiwi!, and was created in 2006 by Dony Permedi, a student in the New York City School of Visual Arts, as his Master’s Thesis Animation. It’s less than three minutes long. I had to think about it after I watched it.

Here’s what I’m guessing. Kiwis can’t fly, so this Kiwi is altering its environment by nailing coniferous trees on the side of a cliff. When he finishes his chores, he puts on aviator head gear and jumps off the cliff, passing along the tops of the trees as he falls. But he’s flying. A tear comes out of his eye as he falls/flies. The animation ends watching him disappear into the fog at the bottom of the cliff, and we hear a “thunk” noise. Once I figured that out, I watched it again, and the video was more than creative. Now it’s sad. But still creative and fun to watch.

There’s a version out there in which the music is replaced by the song “Mad World.” I watched that, but I didn’t get the connection between that song and the kiwi.

The group called dinosaurs includes all the animals that evolved from the very first dinosaur, the common ancestor. Because the fossil record is incomplete, we have not found fossils of this common ancestor; however, based on the characteristics we see in all dinosaurs, we can determine new and unique characteristics it possessed.

A key evolutionary innovation of dinosaurs is that they walk with a fully erect posture, holding their hind legs vertically under their hips. The top of the thighbone (or femur) has a knob or head that sticks out to the side of the rest of the bone and fits into the hip socket (or acetabulum) in the pelvis. The hip socket has a hole in the center, as well as a rim of bone along the upper margin, which helps support the weight of the body on the leg. Since these features are present in all known dinosaurs, we deduce that they first evolved in the common ancestor.

In popular culture, many other kinds of animals, which don’t have this fully developed hip and leg structure, are often incorrectly called dinosaurs. Some examples include Mesozoic marine reptiles, such as plesiosaurs, mosasaurs and ichthyosaurs, as well as a group of Mesozoic flying reptiles called pterosaurs.

This video is part of a series, “Dinosaurs Explained,” produced by the American Museum of Natural History. In the series, Museum paleontologists answer the most frequently asked questions about dinosaurs.

The top of this post is a 25-minute documentary on cholitas luchadores, female luchadore wrestlers. While any individual frame may look deadly, if you click through to the videos, you can tell it’s pretty silly WWE-style choreographed wrestling. It’s a hoot.

And even if you don’t appreciate wrestling, I think we can all appreciate those hats.
