Three different places near Athens were destroyed by massive forest fires.

180+ people are severely injured and burnt.

50 people and counting were found dead on the streets, in their cars or houses, including families that were found hugging each other.

100+ are missing.

This is a national tragedy. So many were lost because of ARROGANT PEOPLE.

Spreading awareness. There’s no need for such things to happen, so many lives were destroyed for no reason.

Here’s some more articles here about the fires

here here and here

And some important excerpt about current info:

“Whilst the definite cause of the wildfires is unknown, the weather conditions created a deadly environment for a fire to spark. Scorching hot weather in Greece has dried out undergrowth and foliage, making any flames easily able to spread. Wind speeds of up to 50mph have also contributed to the spread of fire. Authorities are also employing a drone to scan the area the fires have come from, to rule out any suspicious activity. How far have the fires spread? The fires are on the east coast of Greece and have spread across residential areas and towards beaches.
It is not yet clear how many acres of land have been covered by the flames but strong winds have fanned flames stretching as wide as four miles near Kineta, local officials said. An Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) spokesman said: “The wildfires in Greece are northeast of Athens in the Penteli area and 50km west of Athens.“This area isn’t a main destination for UK tourists. People on holiday in the region are advised to monitor news reports and follow any advice or instructions issued by the local authorities, their travel company or their accommodation providers.“

And here is a site with a collection of resources of where to donate and how to help. I obviously don’t live in Greece, so I’m not 1000% about all of these resources, but it’s here if you can spare some change or compassion.

You can try to donate here if you want, though the source isn’t actually very known, I actually saw that right now. They haven’t said anything about that in the news, though I believe it may be trustworthy.

btw a relief fund is being set up by the hellenic red cross http://www.redcross.gr/ which you can donate to through the following bank account:

As of 22:16 EEST, the death toll has risen to 74 and counting, the number of people missing is still unclear, while at least 187 people were injured, including 23 children.

I’ve been avoiding the news, just staying as far away from the TV as possible with this because everytime I hear news on this I keep thinking “This could’ve been us.”

Every year there’s more than one fire during the summer in Greece. The authorities try their best to spread awareness on forest fires and fire safety.

This has been named by CNN Greece as the one of the most devastating wildfires in Greece since 2000 and the worst that the country has seen since 2007 also by CNN.

Many have called the tragedy a biblical disaster, and they’re not exactly wrong: x, x, x.

The world is on fire.

“The heat and drought pattern is similar to that playing out much further north in Latvia and Sweden. Parts of Italy are also on fire. Earlier this year, enormous fires scorched Siberia.” -Vox

“As for the rest of the world, heat this summer has already proved deadly in countries including Japan, Pakistan, and Canada.” -Vox

Even parts of the Artic Circle.

Non-Americans: hey greece is basically on fire, 150 people are wounded, 53 are killed and our nature is being destroyed. we’re suspecting arson. can you please reblog some posts and help spread awareness?

This fucking site:

Allow me to elaborate on how bad things are here. 7 places are burning at the same time while in Μάτι and Κίνετα the fire not only burned trees but because off the strong winds(80 kilometes per hour) it burned houses, it burned people. Firefighters and volunteers do whatever they can with the little gear they have as always because why on earth would the goverment give money to firefighting vechiles, canadairs and literally anything else that could be useful in this country when we know that every summer someone wants to burn forests so they can build whatever they want. Anyways, people started running away once some firefighters managed to warn them to evacute ( something that others should have done because these people have to keep working so they can prevent the fore from doing anymore damage ). People started running to get to the beach which was their only hope, unfortunately some people with their families were trapped once the fire circurled the area around them leaving them with the only thing to do, wait for their end. Charred bodies were found locked in embrace the next day. Now the people who reached the beach had to wait there so they could be transferred from there to the port of Ραφήνα. Here’s a photo :

While the boats reascued people from the beach they also retrived 19 more from the sea and 10 bodies (I am not sure for the number). That’s a small peak off what has happened the fires haven’t stopped while there are many revivals of the fires. Here’s an article if you are interested http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-07-24/greece-fires-survivors-fled-into-sea-to-escape-flames/10031316

Let me add more information on the matter.

The deaths are officially at 79 by the most recent official announcement. Places like Mati, Kineta, Chania, Neos Boutsas and more are being burned to the core.

Minimum help is being given by neighboring countries. Officially 2 aircrafts from Italy and 2 from Cuprus whipe some are expected from Romania, Hungary, Spain.

There are abouy 31 people registred as missing in a web site while that doesnt mean those are all the people missing.

If you know people you know or suspect are missing call 199, the fire department.

If you are looking for someone missing don’t call hospitals, call 199, the fire department.

People got burned alive in their cars, in their homes.

Cars are literally melted by the fires.

The victims include children, thankfully the ones that survived are shocked, of course, but safe and in the hospital. The number of kids in the hospital ‘Παίδον’ (Pedon) in Athens is 11; 12 exited yesterday, and the kids left are expected to leave today.

The suspicion of the fires falls on arson. It something that Greece has suffered from a lot throughout the years. Yet we are never prepared for most of our problems whether it has to do with natural causes or not.

The situation is horrible. If you can’t help anyway else, reblog to spread awareness on the matter!

If you ppssibly can donate here:

Honestly this is so much more helpful than my vent post (which I didn’t expect to blow up the way it did). If y’all are gonna boost something, boost this instead.

rebblogging AGAIN, because Greece, South Europe in general, needs help.

3 Dogs Are Rebuilding Chilean Forests Once Devastated By Fire

brehaaorgana:

dogs-on-logs:

The job to replant endless acres of forests seemed like a daunting endeavor. That is until three unusual workers took up the task. Six-year-old Das and her two daughters, Olivia and Summer are three Border Collies who have been trained to run through the damaged forests with special backpacks that release native plant seeds. Once they take root, these seeds will help regrow the destroyed area.

A post shared by @balti_mom on

//www.instagram.com/embed.js

It turns out that Border Collies are an ideal breed for this specific type of job. Bounding through miles of forest terrain requires not only speed, intelligence, and endurance, but also a willingness to stay focused and not get distracted by wildlife. Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, so they’re not as likely to run after or hurt other animals in the forest.

This system is also more efficient than having people spread the seeds manually. These speedy canines can race through a forest and cover up to 18 miles a day. Humans, on the other hand, can only cover a few miles each day. These pups can scatter over 20 pounds of seeds, depending on the terrain. While robots or drones might be able to disperse seeds too, dogs aren’t as pricey to handle. Most importantly, they leave a lighter carbon footprint.

Francisca and Constanza put special backpacks on the dogs, fill them with native seeds and then it’s off to the races. Once the dogs have emptied out their bags, Francisca and Constanza give them plenty of treats, refill their bags, and release them again to dash around the destroyed forest, sprinkling more seeds in their wake. The end goal of all this, of course, is to restore the damaged ecosystem and have the wildlife return to the forests.

“All hotels must allow pets during disasters” is incorrect

infodumping-about-cats:

Misinformation on hotels and pets during disasters

False information is going around stating that hotels/etc are required to accept household pets in an emergency evacuation under the ‘‘Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006,” or PETS Act.

It is incorrect to say that hotels must suspend their usual pet policies under this Act. The PETS Act is about FEMA, not hotels or businesses.

(Service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act are already legally permitted in hotels and businesses, regardless of emergency status).

What does the PETS Act do?

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the PETS Act amends an existing act

“…to ensure that State and local emergency preparedness operational plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals… The PETS Act authorizes FEMA to provide rescue, care, shelter, and essential needs for individuals with household pets and service animals, and to the household pets and animals themselves following a major disaster or emergency.”

The PETS Act is only triggered when a federal disaster declaration is made. The summary and the statute itself make no mention of businesses and hotels.

What resources ARE available to pet owners?

Many states and locales have made plans for pets and families with pets, in addition to the federal PETS Act. You check for those plans and laws at the Animal Law page on disasters by Michigan State University.

In California you can check out Governor’s Office of Emergency Services’ page on animals.  You can also visit the California Animal Response Emergency System (CARES) page. You can find resources and check if your city/county has made plans involving pets.

Resources for families with pets are on the CARES site here. They include PDF brochures on multiple animal types. These brochures are useful beyond California.

Besides the destruction, I really feel for all the people with breathing problems in areas affected by the wildfires out West.

It’s gotten rough enough back home a number of times, with seemingly half of WV on fire again and prevailing wind patterns funneling a bunch of the smoke straight down into the New River Valley. Which is prone to fun inversion layers anyway.

A few weeks one fall when I was in high school was the worst time I can remember, especially with the school’s shitty HVAC system actually concentrating the smoke inside the building 😵 With significant asthma problems from it, of course, and I was hardly the only one who couldn’t breathe. It was bad enough everywhere else. That school shouldn’t have stayed open, and I’m amazed in retrospect that nobody’s parents kept them out for their safety that I knew of. (And people no doubt would have been talking about it, not wanting to be there wheezing and choking either.) Guess they didn’t believe the air quality could really be that much worse inside the school if it was staying open. Because kids 😐
But, all of those forest fire seasons look like sparkling clean air, compared to large chunks of the Western US right now. It’s scary to think about from a distance, and I do wish there were something we could do to help people there on the ground.

Here you can find a live map of the national air quality for the USA and this is what it looks like atm:

image

And this is where I am, generally:

image

Primarily, I looked these things up for wildfire and general particulate pollution checks and.. well, the color code is this:

image

and the rating for most of my state– let alone anywhere effected by flooding [ie Louisiana atm] is “Unsafe for sensitive groups” and “Unhealthy”.
The guide for the ratings is found here.

I just wanted to share it because when people talk about pollution in the air, they don’t talk about fires, or how the particle pollution heavily comes from said wildfires and how the west coast suffers under a prolonged fire season as well. It’s a subject that needs to be paid attention to.
As an asthmatic living square in one of the more northern red blobs, it needs to be addressed.

Add smoke and ash to what we generally put into the air and we’re all gonna bake/choke to death. If something isn’t done, we’re going to be in dire straights, not just because of the environment, but because of resulting health issues in elderly, children, and vulnerable people.

When I said please boost, I meant please reblog this.
No one talks about how the western US goes up in flames and much less how the air quality goes to shit every year.

With Tr*mp in charge, pay to firefighters is backed up months behind schedual. People cannot personally afford to go fight fighters, departments can’t afford to go help other departments fight them. Public awareness campaigns are not being planned and put into action to keep people inside/aware of how to keep healthy and to reduce fire risk.

Unless people are seeing the particles in the air, they aren’t considering it a threat and this is a problem.
I’m not the most environmentally versed person and i’m not a scientist, but people need to know about it. Things like ash and smoke drift over the continent and affect much more than their local area.

So please– spread this!

As a seattlite this is important for me.

Seriously, Montana is on fire and we just reached our budget limit for firefighters. We’ve had two firefighters die trying to bring these fires down. Our governor has declared a state of emergency but we can’t get federal aid until 45 does something about it.

Please help. My state is on fire and the air is so horrible here. My friends are losing their homes. Their worlds are going up in flames. Their memories. Everything. We are trying so hard to fight this but nothing is working. The national guard is helping with only one of many fires, to my knowledge. We’ve seen very little rain, and it hasn’t been enough to make any sort of difference. The fires are too big and WE NEED HELP. Please. I’m begging.

Also, some of the larger fires, mainly the Lolo Peak fire and the Rice Ridge fire, are out of control.
The Lolo Peak fire is almost 40,000 acres now. You can fit a bit over 30,000 football fields in that. You can fit over 22,000 football fields in the Rice Ridge fire area.
Here’s a link of fire conditions and the like for Montana as of August 30th, 2017.
http://www.nbcmontana.com/news/keci/montana-wildfire-updates-for-august-30/614623633
We need help.
Please boost this if you can.

Please!

This year is going to be making some serious records! Our fire season will last for MONTHS and there is no end in sight to the fires we are dealing with today. This is so overwhelming, firefighters are working so hard and nothing is working. We need help.
By the end of September, we are expecting (as the article above says) a ridiculous 1,000,000 acres burned, or possibly more. That’s over 750,000 football fields for those who can’t picture how big an acre is.
We have very little help right now.
And Montana is not the only state dealing with fires, which is why we need to get it together and spread this information!
This could be life or death for some, be it people or their pets. This could save so many people if we can just spread this. Send it to friends if you can’t reblog it. Please help.

Picture credits to Stormy M. on Facebook. This is what it is like all over the state of Montana right now. It’s either smokey or it’s on fire. This is the Rice Ridge fire right now. It’s getting worse. These are from two days ago. Please spread this.

This is in the middle of the day, all taken in the last couple of weeks. It is worse now. It is dark on a day where there are no clouds to block the sun. We are suffocating. Thousands of us are breathing in thick smoke and ash, and there’s no end in sight. You can’t see anything past 100ft anyways.

So many people are forgetting about the “last best place on Earth”. Everything is on fire. Memories are up in flames. Nature is dying. Animals are burning to death.

Even if this doesn’t match your blog theme, you should still at least reblog this. Lives are at risk here. We have no rain coming, just more dry lightning. We need help.

Photos aren’t mine. Credit to Davina G. For the last two.

Montana now has over 1,000,000 acres on fire.

http://www.kpax.com/story/36306168/montanas-2017-fire-season-tops-1-million-acres-burned

Please reblog this. Many people are in danger. We need help.

I am so happy to finally see something somewhere about Montana. I live in a place that is lucky to not have fires too close but dammit we have been breathing smoke for months, and we are the lucky ones because we don’t have ash

These mountains that I am lucky enough to see every single day? They have been covered by smoke for months, and I’m not kidding or being melodramatic when I say I’ve forgotten that the sky can really, truly be that blue. The sunlight and shadows it casts are orange all day, and my city is lucky

The fires are out of control, as stated above, and we are left waiting for snow that may not come for months. There are thousands of people who need help and yet the national news seems to not even mention us beyond a simple statement of acres lost…which is not something to be downplayed or taken lightly.

This is also a great video that was posted on September 5th with great information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2kEYBAfcyQ&t=155s

Please, reblog and help Montana if you can. I know many places across the world are hurting, but the people of Montana don’t deserve to be looked over as a result.

Thank you for the update!
Yeah, Washington is trying to get it’s handle on things but Montana, you guys don’t have a lot of natural boundaries to keep a fire at bay.

I’m praying for you and the crews keeping things back as much as they can. Till some of this mess gets knocked back, it’s going to be a lot of keeping the channels open and making sure we don’t let people forget we’re all out here out west.

Seriously Guys

My area is in the orange, it was yellow this morning when I walked out to the car to find it lightly covered with ash.
