Actual text exchange between me & my BFF, July 17, 2014 (so, we were 31, almost 32 years old):
Her: Guess who’s having a baby?! Well it’s me. Just about 11 weeks!
Me: Haha very funny
Her: No joke

There followed a phone call, the first words of which were “so is this a good thing or a bad thing?”

Basically “oh shit what are y’all gonna do” will, for some people, always be the reaction, no matter how old, no matter how married*.

*leaving aside the fact that, globally, over 70% of women who get abortions are married.

truscum rhetoric is not only shitty and invalidating of nb folks in general but also really fucking racist as many cultures have multiple genders before your white two gender bullshit. just a note from your local two spirit person

Friendly reminder that cultures do not have the ability to bypass biology and their multiple genders stem from homophobic ideologies.

this makes no sense. how does anything related to gender become homophobic. gender and attraction are separate things. not only that, but binary biology (which isnt the same as gender… also intersex people exist) and gender were only recently created as opposed to nonbinary folks who predate any social structure we have in place now.

love, your local two spirit person

Yeah, because those ancient cultures had no understanding of biology. They also believed that you need to rip out a heart if at least five guys a day in order for the sun to rise next morning.

All those “native genders” are just poorly understood homosexuality and transgenderism and sometimes even outright eunuchs.

Intersex is a rare chromosomal disorder. 99% of the planet does not have it. Statistically, it proves absolutely nothing.

Internet, anesthesia, the theory of a round world, virusology, evolution, space travel – all of these things were discovered very recently yet no one sane doubts them.

Wisdom of the ages is bullshit. Humanity advances faster than ever and we don’t need archaic beliefs anymore.

I agree with this, but the round earth thing was actually discovered by the ancient Greeks, and was well known by Columbus’ time. Columbus thought he could reach India by going in the opposite direction of what was conventional.

I keep seeing this and it confuses me greatly.

What’s the evidence for the claim that “all these native genders are just poorly understood homosexuality?”

I know I’m probably talking out of my arse here, but part of me wonders if it e end matters.

If some people were what we’d call NB in the past, great, but it’s ultimately a modern construct. Just like homosexuality is, lmao.

We can hash out whether or not it’s one with any backing in biology without having to drag our distant ancestors into it.

Is it distant ancestors, though, or is it real world native people who would rather tell us how they see gender identity and gender expression rather than be used to argue everything is homosexuality as the West currently understands it?

Like, my position is “sure, science CAN prove people are wrong about themselves! But please don’t assert that it will instead of waiting until it already has.”

Which is why I asked for evidence–because I haven’t seen proof we’re at that point yet.

i’m awful. but awful rhymes with waffle, so it’s not that bad

[every english speaking non american/Canadian sighs deeply]

omfg why the fuck would you pronounce awful like waffle? wtf is going on in america?

im trying to think how either of those words could possibly be pronounced in any other way

Yeah, I don’t see what alternatives there would be…

Cot–caught merger

The vowel pronunciation there actually varies a lot across North American dialects. And Scottish English is apparently the odd one out elsewhere, with merging them.

people shouldn’t have to pimp themselves off to the military to afford college wtf

They don’t…lol

actually almost every teacher i’ve ever had has suggested joining the military because they’ll pay for college and almost half of my class is either doing it or considering it but i hope that rock you live under has air conditioning

this literally why my grandfather, cousin, and father-in-law joined the military.

Something that was taught to me in my Native studies class: the military also targets people of color for recruitment by going to more diverse, usually lower funded high schools. As written in The Militarization of Indian Country by Winona LaDuke;

“Today, Native peoples have the highest rates of enlistment of any ethnic group in the United States. In some Native communities, in a single graduating class over half of the graduates will be military-bound. Many youth, both reservation-based and urban, see no options outside the military to secure an economically stable future.”

“An estimated 22 percent of Native Americans 18 or older are veterans.”

According to this, 7.3% of white veterans are between 17 and 34 years of age (aka those most likely to be joining up to cover college expenses), while every other ethnic group fairly outstripped white veterans, some more than double the amount.

Something else to notice is that enrollment in the South is much higher than in the North-East. The article where I pulled this information from makes the argument that patriotism is higher in the South than in the North, but I don’t necessarily agree it’s the only reason for the difference. The South is much poorer than the North. The graph they present also lumps together those who make 65k a year with those who make almost 250k a year; I would argue that these are very different income levels, and cannot be put into one category while observing enlistment levels, particularly while thinking about college expenses.

tl;dr: The military targets those who do not have a guaranteed economically stable future, which includes minorities across ethnic and economic lines, and promises college for service.

I could go on in discussing how this is an act of violence towards ethnic and racial minorities, but I think this is enough for the moment.
