Keith Haring in 1989: “Unfinished Painting”. Haring died few months after and this is his last painting. This is supposed to be a self-portrait. Haring knew he wouldn’t have enough time to finish it. This is one of the saddest but certainly the most powerful thing I’ve ever seen.

to clarify: this is a finished self portrait. haring did know that he would be unable to continue to work; this “unfinished” painting refers to that self-consciously as a visualization of how the aids crisis and government neglect robbed him of his life and future career.

i feel like this distinction is important? there are many artists who died due to hiv/aids and left unfinished work, but haring made this specifically to comment on his impending death. i feel like stating that it’s actually unfinished takes away some of his agency as an artist/activist/pwa and the political power of the work.

I was told recently about a school that was shamed into changing its school motto. The motto was “I hear, I see, I learn.” Nothing wrong with that per se. Unfortunately the motto was in Latin, and the Latin for “I hear, I see, I learn” is “audio, video, disco”.

What the fuck that’s the best school motto ever change it back

Your yearly reminder that “I learn through suffering” can be translated into Latin as “Disco Inferno.”

A group of rough looking boys walked past me today and all I heard of their conversation was “he’s got that anxiety disorder bro so I went with him so he’d be more comfortable” and it made me realise the world isn’t all that bad

#this is team skull

The pet store I worked at had a pen with rabbits near the front door. On every side of the pen were huge signs saying “You can pet me, but don’t pick me up!”
One day two absolutely huge guys came in and one immediately reaches into the pen to grab a rabbit. Before i could say anything his friend grabbed his arm and asked him “did you see the sign?”
He said “yeah! it says that you can pick them up but don’t pet them!”
Then he went quiet for a moment and softly said “I didn’t read it right did I?”
And his friend just puts his arm on his shoulder and said “its ok, i know you’ve got that thing where words get mixed up. Let just pet these cute lil shits”
And I still haven’t gotten over that interaction.

I was walking my dog through Boston bc he likes the likes car rides. He’s a little thing tbh we call him short and long.
So this huge scary man with a full beard approaches me like “hey can my buddy and I pet your dog? He gets nervous around dogs but your’s is so small I think it’s a good place to start.”
Ofc I was like “yes he’s very friendly!” So this guy brings his equally big friend over and they sit on the floor while this man looks terrified of my tiny dog so big man number one asks “can I pick him up?” And i say yes so he picks him up and puts him on man number two’s lap and man number two is abt to freak out and his friend straight up just goes “hey man, it’s okay just relax I’d never let anything hurt you. He’s a good boy.” I’ll never forget it ever bc I know that man looked at me (5’3 , glasses, probably wearing a sweater vest) and my dog (kinda goofy looking little thing) and was like ‘ah yes the two least intimidating living things I’ve seen in Boston all day he’ll feel relaxed around them’ and went out of his way to help his friend. It makes me so happy

My husband had this Dungeons and Dragons group ages ago, and one of the guys was TERRIFIED of cats.  The moment he sees one he freezes up and can barely breathe.  Said guy is almost seven feet tall and solid wall of muscle.  Whenever he came over I’d put the cats in the bedroom and chill out with a book because my cats don’t like being shut away without one of us.

One of my cats was pawing at the door and meowing loudly, an indication she REALLY needs to use the litter box.  I let her out and decide, hey, I’m hungry, and decide to the kitchen.  I forgot to shut the bedroom door.

Next thing I hear is the group going completely silent.  My husband very calmly asks me to come over and help him gather our two cats up.  I go over to where the group is and my black cat, Cacoa, is rubbing up against the guy’s leg, purring, and doing her “let me on your lap” meow.  The other cat, Jasper, is sitting at the window, chilling out.  I go over and pick up Cacoa and tell the big dude she’s harmless, loves laps, and would be thrilled if he pet her.  Very slowly he touches my cat’s face, and she leans right into his hand.  He then pets her back and sighs because she’s really soft and purring like mad.  After a few minutes he asks how to pick her up and if it’s okay if she sits on his lap.

He spent the next six hours spoiling my cat.  The next week he showed up with cat treats and toys because he fell in love with the cats.  He told me he was doing some research on house cats, and even talked to a vet about them.  A couple months later he adopted two cats and was as thrilled and excited as a new parent.

Oh no a new one!!!

Look, if a person finds out they’re carrying a foetus who may or will be disabled, and they get pressured into aborting, that isn’t freedom of choice.

If that person is pushed towards information that ignores the lived experiences of people with those disabilities, that isn’t freedom of choice.

I am pro-choice. I believe that person should have the choice to abort. But I also believe their choice should be based on accurate, relevant information rather than the ableist bias of our society.

Stop acting like pro-choice ends at allowing abortions. Stop acting like eugenics are fine “because pro-choice.” If you’re pro-choice you need to remember that informed consent is a thing, and to acknowledge that the way abortion is pushed on parents of disabled foetuses is extremely problematic in its current incarnation.

Thank you.

As someone who is congenitally disabled (disabled from birth), I hate having my existence used as club by one side of the “debate” to beat up on the other side.

(I’m pro-choice, too, by the way).

The anti-choice people try to shame me out of my pro-choice position, by saying: If your mother had known ahead of time, and could have aborted, she would have! How do you feel about that?*

The pro-choice people (most of them  – OP excepted), paint my existence as nothing but a punishment and a burden, that anti-choice people are forcing mothers to face.

Both “sides” of this argument are Ableist A.F. Both are hateful and bigoted.

*My answer to that question is two-fold:

a) if she had aborted me, I wouldn’t have any feelings at all, because I wouldn’t exist, but I’d rather not exist at all than to be born to a mother who didn’t want me – especially since disabled children are much more likely to suffer abuse and neglect, and

b) You never knew my mother – decades after her death, I learned she had had a passel of family in the neighborhood where I grew up, and I’d never even heard her mention their names. And looking back on her last encounters with the few cousins I did know about, and how ugly and sour that turned out, I can only conclude that they tried to  pressure her into putting me in an institution (this was in the 1960s). And she wanted to protect me from their ableism.

My mother never saw me as a burden, and how dare you.

When someone disagrees with you online and demands you prove your point to their satisfaction by writing a complete and logically sound defense including citations, you can save a lot of time by not doing that.

Bro, I’ve known you for twelve seconds and enjoyed none of them, I’m not taking homework assignments from you.

This got a lot of responses from people pointing out that evidence is a key part of intellectual inquiry, discourse, and debate.  That being able to support your beliefs is a key critical thinking skill.  Which is 100% true.

Except that you don’t actually have to participate in intellectual discourse any time some fucko on the Internet tells you to.

There’s a vast difference between “this is an important thing to be able to do,” and “this is a thing that you must be continuously available to perform in public for any stranger who asks.”

Pope Francis denounces transgender people as ‘annihilation of man,’ says it’s ‘terrible’ that kids are taught to choose their gender

Hey, remember that time Pope Francis compared trans people to nuclear weapons? His transphobia is showing again.

In a meeting last week, the pope said that it’s “terrible” that children are taught to “choose” their gender, and that transgender people represent the “annihilation of man.” There’s this excerpt:

The pope said he wanted to conclude his remarks by reflecting on this: “We are living a moment of annihilation of man as image of God.” He added that his predecessor, Benedict XVI, had labelled current times “the epoch of sin against God the Creator”.

He said: “Today, in schools they are teaching this to children – to children! – that everyone can choose their gender.” Without specifying, he blamed this on textbooks supplied by “persons and institutions who donate money”. The pope blamed what he called “ideological colonizing” backed by “very influential countries”, which he did not identify. One such “colonization”, he said – “I’ll say it clearly with its first and last name – is gender.”

And also this excerpt:

“Today, children are taught this at school: that everyone can choose their own sex,” Francis said last week, according to the Catholic Herald and other news organizations that read a Vatican transcript of the closed-door meeting. “God created man and woman; God created the world like this and we are doing the exact opposite.”

Teaching children that they can pick their gender, Francis said, is “terrible.”

Saying it again: Maybe he’s said some more progressive things than other popes, but that doesn’t make Pope Francis an ally.

I really don’t think he should be accusing us of colonization, considering that he’s the head of the Catholic Fucking Church

I maintain that it is extremely and deliberately threatening to transgender people in Catholic countries in the global south for the Pope to be associating “transgender” with “colonialism.” There are already more trans women getting murdered in Brazil than in any of the country and the pope is intentionally pouring gasoline on this situation. He’s from Latin America, he knows what he’s doing. The man is an overstuffed bag of turds with a mitre on.

Yeah, real sick of fellow liberals treating this guy like an amusing curiosity because he has, a couple of times, said things less terrible than people in his position have previously said.

He isn’t admirable. He is corrupt, his church is corrupt, and the number of abuses of which they are guilty are too many to list.

A 16-year-old transgender girl in Connecticut has been incarcerated in an adult men’s prison for nearly a month — and she still hasn’t been charged or convicted of a single crime.

“Jane Doe"was living in a home for traumatized youth when authorities claim she attacked a staffer. But no criminal charges are even pending against her.

Instead, the teen has suffered in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT for weeks without treatment or educational training  — and instead of letting her go, the Department of Correction wants to send her to a men’s prison where she’ll be at high risk of abuse and sexual assault!

Please, join us in calling on Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy to release “Jane Doe” from prison and return her to state custody, placing her in a juvenile facility with kids of her gender if the state still plans to press charges!

PETITION TO GOV. MALLOY: Release “Jane Doe” from prison and return her to state custody, placing her in a juvenile facility with kids of her gender if the state still plans to press charges

Just so everyone remembers, this girl is a multiple rape victim who has been physically and sexually abused not only by her own family, but also by staff in DCF group homes. She “assaulted” a male staffer who GRABBED HER FROM BEHIND, a male staffer who has since been fired.

DCF lied to the court to get authorization to put this girl in prison, claiming that the staff she assaulted were “seriously injured” when the police report in fact says there were only minor injuries. And now DCF – not Corrections, but DCF – is petitioning to put her in a men’s prison.

this all went down in spring/summer 2014. a year later the connecticut appellate court ruled that her rights had been violated. http://fox61.com/2015/06/08/court-overturns-transfer-of-transgender-teen-to-prison/
