You hear a lot about tumblr posts being “ominous” but I am absolutely sure nothing will ever hold a candle to the raw dread this sequence of words has injected into the pit of my stomach.
Can we just… normalize teens loving their parents? Like obviously you’re not obligated to if your parents are shitty, but damn, I love my mom. She’s there for me all the time and sure we have rough patches but honestly she’s the greatest. Like. We need teens to know that they don’t have to hate their parents just cause.
It must be nice to come from a nonabusive family. One that doesn’t traumatized every emotional interaction to the point where you drive away any sign of love as a form of manipulation because that’s all that you were raised with. 🤷♀️

Culturally normalizing being okay with parents during the teenage years would also probably help the teenagers who are abused by their parents, because right now? If a teen talks about their parents being strict or never letting them do anything without diving into ornate detail, most people in the US think Normal Teenage Issues and not Possible Cause For Abuse Investigation, Let Me Ask A Few Questions. Sometimes even if the teen gives details, because hyperbole comes with the hormonal fluctuations and we’d rather hear it as hyperbole.
If the parental conflict portrayed as part of the teenage years in the media was even just toned down, unrelated adults might be more likely to see serious teenage complaints about parents as possible red flags instead of automatically defaulting to ‘wait, they’re just looking out for you, you’ll agree with them in a few years when puberty’s over’.
Despite all the law enforcement resources expended, empirical research on the dangers or benefits of erotic services ads has been sparse. But a new study provides strong evidence that when law enforcement closes down sites like Craigslist or Redbook, women die.
The September 2017 study, authored by West Virginia University and Baylor University economics and information systems experts, analyzes rates of female homicides in various cities before and after Craigslist opened an erotic services section on its website. The authors found a shocking 17 percent decrease in homicides with female victims after Craigslist erotic services were introduced.
The data does not provide a single clear explanation as to why female homicide rates drop so steeply, Scott Cunningham, one of the paper’s authors, told ThinkProgress. It’s possible, for example, that when Craigslist opens erotic services ads, some women in abusive domestic situations decide to become sex workers, move out, and so escape violent homicide at the hands of their spouses or boyfriends.
The most likely explanation, though, Cunningham says, is that sex workers simply make up a huge percentage of female homicide victims. When sex workers are safer, female homicide rates drop significantly.

Once sex workers move indoors, they are much safer for a number of reasons, Cunningham said. When you’re indoors, “you can screen your clients more efficiently. When you’re soliciting a client on the street, there is no real screening opportunity. The sex worker just has to make the split second decision. She relies on very limited and complete information about the client’s identity and purposes. Whereas when a sex worker solicits indoors through digital means, she has Google, she has a lot of correspondence, she can ask a lot of questions. It’s not perfect screening, but it’s better.”

In theory, closing down advertising is supposed to reduce exploitation of women. In practice, when resources are taken away from people living on the edge of poverty, they have fewer options and are less able to protect themselves.
For all these reasons access to the Internet can transform the experience of sex work. Young women who have been able to screen clients using sites like Craigslist, “almost feel like this is a safe job because they have these tools,” DiAngelo said.
Sex workers report that free online advertising makes them safer. There is now data showing that erotic services ads significantly decrease female homicide rates. So, will law enforcement back down and allow these sites to operate again?

If we want people to be able to afford to live in cities and not get priced out, we have to make a two pronged approach. One is to build houses towards all incomes and price ranges, not just luxury condos. And the other is a robust wage floor so people can actually afford to live.
Fight for 15 is doing an amazing job and I love them, but we have to realize that is quite a few places, $15/hr still isn’t enough to live on.
Which is where the 2% comes in. It allows a minimum wage that is flexible with regards to the costs of living.
And it wasn’t plucked out of thin air either:
Rent should be a third of a persons income, or to restate the equation: income should be three times a person’s rent.
And since a full time job is 8 hrs a day / 40 hrs a week / 160 hrs a month.
So when you do the math, the ideal hourly minimum wage as a percentage of rent works out to around 1.875%, which for ease of calculation is 2%.
I currently live in Boulder. The average apartment costs $1800.The minimum wage would have to be about $36/hr.
In Denver it would be about $30.18/hour

Well yeah, I live in Denver, and you CANNOT find a studio apartment, even in the cheapest neighborhood in town for under $800-$900/month. I’ve tried. When you combine that with health insurance, gas/car insurance (which you are required to have), and food, it gets pretty pricey. I work 40 hours a week at $11/hr (which is well above the city’s minimum wage). After taxes I make roughly $1200-1300/month. I have student loans to pay off and transition-related expenses 2 times a month in addition to all the other necessary expenses (including mental health medication). So I’m still living with my parents because I can’t afford to live in Denver otherwise.
I’m an unmarried, childless, able-bodied adult. I’m making several dollars above minimum wage at a full-time job and I can’t afford to live in Denver. For a single parent with even one kid, $30.18/hr is a pretty conservative estimate for what it would take to live here and support a kid.
