-Pretended to be the heirs of ancient Greece to justify their white supremacist colonialist actions/thinking while making up theories that current Greeks weren’t descendants of ancient Greeks and that we’d ruined our pure lineage by mixing with Middle Easterners
More destructive shit:
-Helped liberate Greece from the Ottoman Empire so they could put it under the control of the Great Powers, giving Greece a horrible German king for ages. For that moment, Greeks got to be Christian Europeans so that the British public could be convinced to support the huge effort of the liberation of Greece. Basically making sure Greece was under the control of the Great Powers
-They arranged the massacre that preceded/helped trigger the Greek Civil War
-During the Greek Civil War, they armed nationalists to keep Greece from joining the Soviet Union and keep Greece under their/western sphere of influence. This eventually resulted in them creating and arming ultra-nationalists that would evolve into Golden Dawn, Greece’s extremely violent fascist party. So they basically created a terrorist group within our borders for their own geopolitical interests. The Greek Civil War was also the first proxy war of the Cold War
-Other geopolitical fuckery
-More generally about Greeks overall, they also colonized Cyprus, stirred up ethnic tensions which resulted in the deaths of countless people, planned the partition of Cyprus which resulted in thousands of Greek-Cypriots dead and displaced, and arrested and tortured thousands of Greek-Cypriots including civilians.
On the subject of Cyprus, the British government also used it to goad Greece into abandoning neutrality during World War I, despite having been the ones to establish a Danish-German monarchy, which automatically meant Greece would have great difficulty supporting the UK. They promised to withdraw from Cyprus and stop standing in the way of enosis but quickly withdrew that promise once the war had been won and Greece had been left in ruins.
Another interesting point I recently discovered was in the 19th century, Greece was controlled by the Great Powers Britain, France and Russia, which all created their own political parties in an attempt to fully colonize the country. The UK used Greece’s English Party (which they had set up) to promote one of their supporters – Charilaos Trikoupis and make him Prime Minister. Incidentally, once that happened, Greece went bankrupt within less than a decade, and the British started privatizing important parts of the country, all while pretending to save it from the other two powers. This influence has, unfortunately, not yet faded. E.g. we still do not own our country.
British intervention in Crete was also criticized strongly, especially in the late 1940s because the aim was to keep Greeks fighting and dying against the Italians and Germans, while the British government had instructed its army to protect Turkey (from Greece, ironically) so it would gain access to the Middle East.
Not going to talk about the Parthenon Marbles because that’s old news, @kokkinisto-kounoopi said it already. But I am going to mention that the Civil War was one of the most brutal conflicts in Greece, with 190000 natives dead, and a million people displaced. The British Army essentially entered the country, killed members of the resistance force that actively helped them just years before and helped win WWII by stalling the Germans long enough to postpone the Invasion of Russia, and disarmed them with the promise that they wouldn’t attack. The rebels laid down their weapons, and the next thing that happened was British bombs raining down on them. This bloodbath, known as the Dekemvriana, lasted a month and resulted in the death of 20000 civilians.
So my boyfriend came out as trans last night and I realized something… back when we first started dating we identified as lesbians, then I came out as trans and consequently realized I’m bisexual, and now I’m in a gay relationship. So what I’m trying to say is that I have actually been LGBT as a singular person. Every single acronym. I have ascended and reached gay nirvana
This is the earliest known tomb painting in Europe, and it’s in Veii, Italy. It’s a very, very early example of the funerary frescoes which the Etruscans would be remembered historically for. This tomb is known as the Tomb of the Roaring Lions and it is probably my favorite thing of all time.
It’s also got some ducks, which were apparently super special to the Etruscans and nobody really knows why.
“I respect [insect/spider/thing] outdoors but IN MY HOME IT DESERVES DEATH” is one of the most common responses I see in regard to treating tiny creatures with respect and it’s just really sad people fall back on that so eagerly to excuse what’s still completely senseless destruction.
A bedbug or a tick or something else that wants your blood, sure, that makes sense, but a spider wandering into your house is still minding its own business hunting flies and crickets. It doesn’t know this big cave “belongs” to an animal that arbitrarily hates it for being there, and no, spiders do not just climb into your bed and bite you in your sleep.
The vast majority of flies, moths, beetles and anything else that small that ends up in your house actively *does not want* to be in such a place because it’s doomed to starve or dehydrate. Others are just trying to come in from the cold, and even if it’s your food they’re after, they don’t know that it’s “your” food. They especially don’t know that it upsets you for something 1/1000th your size to take a bite of that food; most other big animals don’t care, so they have no reason to be cautious of it.
People talk like it’s some kind of delinquency to be punished or something. It feels kinda more like reaching for a justification to enjoy a tiny moment of socially acceptable sadism.
Do what you really have to do to protect yourself from a deadly allergy or something but don’t be an asshole to something just because it made a wrong turn it can’t even comprehend.
Look at this face:
People honestly need to have more compassion for little ones who are visiting.
Education is a huge key to fixing this though! I’ve found that the more information about insects and arachnids you share with others, the more they start to understand that these are living creatures that deserve respect.
What about cockroaches? I’m mixed about them because they are quite cute.
A heavy population of roaches in a house can trigger asthma, and in theory, harbor some dangerous bacteria as their waste builds up. It’s usually only German cockroaches that get “severe” though (the tiny ones) while many other roaches have smaller, less intrusive populations. Larger species like American and Oriental roaches prefer moist conditions, so their presence is more often a symptom of rot or they, too, are just coming in from outside.
The risk of disease from roaches is pretty much highly exaggerated, as they can only pick up disease from their immediate environment. In a relatively clean house, the roaches will be fairly sanitary as well!
The really sad thing about “pest” cockroaches is that they evolved to be beneficial to us. They originally come from caves, where their scavenging habits would have made conditions comparatively cleaner and safer for other, larger animals living there. It’s only in the artificially sterile environment of a modern human house that they become a “contamination” themselves, and seldom even encounter the many predators that would have controlled them in a natural cave.
Most species of cockroach, though, just aren’t cave or house dwellers either way. A lot of people mistakenly think they’ve got a roach problem when they’re just seeing “forest” roaches who, once again, got lost like so many other creatures in the wrong place, and would rather be back outside!
Anyway here’s what I think is the most beautiful roach, Polyzosteria mitchelli:
Also note that roaches experience something a lot like friendship
The FBI identified the gunman who opened fire this morning during a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois. The bureau said Hodgkinson was taken to the hospital, where he died.
It would be totally preventable if only they paid attention to his violence against women.
Same thing everytime abt these white male domestic terrorist. Yet they want ppl to look at them as individuals not a,group. Where r the questions abt why the white community didn’t know r turn him n.
you see shit like this and just realize like… no wonder the entire civilized world believed in magic and shit so strongly. im spiritual myself but if you didnt have the scientific framework, the concept of magic is equally explanatory… the earth shows us crazy shit each and every day
according to wikipedia we still don’t know how the fuck Ball Lightning happens
James Lee Burke brings up ball lightning a lot in his books A LOT. I had an image of it being this quiet, faintly glowing ball…
…not a fucking martian death ray.
For years, my grandmother swore that one night a ball of lighting rolled through the living room out of one of the electrical sockets and then disappeared. It left no marks, no injuries, and I always thought she had just been seeing things. This is wild!
I saw ball lightning at the end of my street once as a kid and it was just like ‘whoa’
