okay but real talk, lets just replace the course material used to teach mathematics in k-12 in the usa with the art of problem solving. everyone would be so much better for it. and its already written, theres no work involved.

JUST REPLACE THE FUCKING MCGRAW HILL BOOKS WITH THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING. burn the mcgraw hill books to the ground. set them all on fire. leave none of them unburnt. delete mcgraw hill from this earth.

What I’ve never understood is why we let Texas choose the course material for schools when they rank 43rd in education among all states.

they want us to fail. they want our kids to fail. only the rich can succeed, and the rich do not use mcgraw hill course material.

I live in NC and when my sis was going into the 7th grade (so abt 4 years ago ish) i went to her open house with her and i was talking to her language arts teacher and i mentioned critical thinking and the exact word she responded with were “oh, we took critical thinking out of the curriculum starting this year” and i have never been so ungodly terrified for the state of the U.S.

yall reading this????? took. critical thinking. out. of. the. curriculum. fuuuuuuuck.

Exactly. The point is for public schools to fail.

You know who wants public schools to fail? ALL THE POLITICIANS, ALL THE CEOS, THE BILL GATES FOUNDATION, QUICKEN LOANS, YOUR FAVE COMMUNITY OUTREACH TECH COMPANIES, ALL THE MONIED GENTRY.

Why? School Privatization.

Shitty books&curriculum is one way to insure public schools fail.

You know who’s also gotta go so they can try to quell student dissent and minority children’s amazing talent for calling bullshit and fucking things up?

Real ass teachers. Specifically, the ones giving kids in colonized neighborhoods a healthy dose of Civics, History, Social Studies, Debate, Protest strategy…generally the people taking our kids’ outrage and giving them the tools to go forth and fight state & corporate violence against their communities.

As of now, in Michigan (ground zero of Betsy DeVos), NO TEACHING CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED FOR THESE SUBJECTS: Business, entrepreneurship, marketing advertising, business, capitalism, math, science, technology, STEM, and Sociology.

Wait what?

Yup.

So all the CEOs and politicians and Business Capitalists For Evil can just take up these positions? Even in districts that aren’t completely charter schools yet???

Yup.

Admittedly, a degree (but no teaching cert) in a math or science field has been all you needed to teach in poor districts for awhile now.

But basically they want less incentive for people to be trained in and adhere to the professional standards of teaching.

They are specifically going after teaching degrees in the social sciences. If you don’t need certification for it, or don’t get better positions for more comprehensive teacher education– less people will go for these degrees and less funding will go to universities for degrees in education. Again, this frees up the union-busting charter school business CEOs for inserting themselves into underprivileged neighborhoods and giving the kids TONS of great enrichment programs in How To Innovate For Our Company Without Compensation For Your Intellectual Property, and Unpaid Child Labor School Beautification Using Products Sold by Corporations Buying Up Property from The Banks Who Foreclosed Your Parents home.

So.

Certification is no longer needed in Sociology. An elective high school course. That’s shitty. (Also dance. I forgot about dance! Not having qualified dance teachers IS A FLAT OUT SAFETY HAZARD, but it leaves plenty of room for the Quicken Loans Freedom Dance Team to come in and invigorate your formerly-juliard-track kids in the art of Zumba.) But they also officially took away the weighted (i.e. “this proves you have more knowledge & training”) status of the comprehensive social studies certification. This means a teacher who minored in US history has the same qualifications as the teacher who did the Hard-Core Social Studies Teacher Program that required they take extra credits and certification tests in history, US government, geography, sociology, civics, and sometimes economics.

Social Studies teachers (from good schools that prioritize education, not business administration) are trained and professionally compelled to teach critical thinking skills, ethics, research, and analysis. We need incentives for the people who take this responsibility seriously and are GOOD at it. Unless you’re a politician/CEO in which case that’s the LAST thing you want.

Math: At the school I worked at in Detroit, we got the very rare ACTUAL MATH TEACHER. The books sucked, district couldn’t pay for Spanish editions, and our population was bilingual. Dude taught middle school math ENTIRELY WITH FOLDABLES. The “book” was the brightly-colored foldables students made each day in class and stapled into a composition book. OH! And he taught in TWO LANGUAGES. I was MORE THAN HAPPY to translate his foldables into Spanish whenever I could. The kids lacked some fundamentals from elementary school, but the foldables were a brilliant way to keep them engaged and to visually break down the concepts so they made more sense to more kids. And teach them how to make study tools all at the same time…

^^^^^^You need GOOD ASS teachers to teach concepts across an infinity range of abilities. And you need these teachers to FEEL ACCOUNTABLE TO THEIR STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY!

But the Bipartisan School Privatization Capitalists want none of this.

They want public schools to fail.

I also want to add that predominately nonwhite school districts with lower standardized test scores, often provide A REALLY GREAT EDUCATION that fosters a great amount of critical thinking! But this type of thinking is often culturally relevant, isn’t tested for, isn’t easily triggered when kids are presented with NON-culturally relevant curriculum, sometimes isn’t acknowledged as critical thinking at all, or is flat-out criminalized.

And, now, in most places, a revolving door of under qualified white people have replaced experienced teachers from the community of generations past.

None of this bodes well for kids thinking of school as a place where they are free AT ALL, let alone free to think.

Just my two cents…

Don’t even get me started on the horrors that is Teach for America (TFA). TFA is now trying to help newly certified teachers from actual college programs find jobs in New York because the rich white people who wanted to put in their two years and move on realized that TFA isn’t the way to go, they provide no support, and teaching is a serious profession you actually need training for and most TFA recruits weren’t and aren’t cut out to teach in a classroom.

Yeah, except schools that have any experience with the TFA and are run by people who remotely care about the kids (i.e. not NYC BOE) have cut ties with the TFA and won’t consider their candidates for job placements.

People who perform manual labor should be not only given high and liveable wages, but unlimited access to healthcare and physical therapy to help manage the myriad conditions that come from doing back-breaking work.

Like this is not an absurd concept. It bothers me that people think that it is.

I have literally been yelling about this all day. The Washington Post published a misleading and Ill informed article called Disabled or Just Desperate. The author followed a man living in poverty, reluctant to file for disability after watching his family barely survive on it for various aquaired disabilities. The article implies 1/3 of working age Americans live off of disability checks, and explicitly says signing up to receive disability checks pretty much garuntees you will never work again.

What if fails to point out is if this man had access to healthcare or the money to afford health Care in his line of manual labor, he would likely never had needed disability checks to survive.

The reason so many working age adults receive these checks are because when they are hurt, they work through the injury instead of getting the help they need because they can’t afford the medical bills, or afford to take time off of work to heal.

This is a cycle, and passing the AHCA will only increase these expenses. People who work manual labor need access to health Care and they money to get the extra care they need so they aren’t forced to retire at 40 and collect checks from the government simply to survive.

Boozhoo (hello), my name is Ken, I am a disabled Ojibwe artist from northern Wisconsin. I am writing this post because I am having a hard time making ends meet and any donations I could possibly receive at this time would be greatly appreciated. Recent events have left my bank account depleted, my cupboards bare, I’m unable to cover utility bills, and I have several out of state medical appointments in the very near future.

I do have PayPal, that is really the best way to donate at this time, the email I use for that is: baapimakwa@gmail.com, or you can click here.

Got the updated utility bill for June (gas and electric) and there is no way I am going to be able to cover it at this time.

Still $75 short.
