In fact, Adapt has taught me that protesting is not the first step, it is the last step. For every direct action that the group has organized, there is months, if not years, of groundwork that has lead up to it. We meet with legislators, we write policy, we try to work with administrations, and when we are ignored we demonstrate.

land-of-maps:

Britain has “invaded” all but 22 countries in the world in its long and colorful history [620×307]

This map would have more impact if it didn’t show modern accepted boundaries but instead like, the actual areas of British invasion and colonization.
Like there weren’t redcoats in the rocky mountains so it’s weird to color in the entire USA.

And also distinguishing between like, sending in troops to help fight off Nazi invasion, and colonial settlement/invasion.

We invaded a shitton of the world, but it’s not particularly accurate to say we invaded norway. Stationing troops in a place during WW2, or fighting nazi occupation is really different to the way we fucked up eg. india, and that’s a worthwhile distinction.

Also, like, modern political borders are modern political borders. An invasion on one small country might get coloured as a huge area because the modern country is much bigger.

IDK what it would look like if it was a map with every country the US has ever stationed troops in coloured in, but it’d be an interesting comparison.

This needs citations so badly, just so you can track like start date and their definition of invaded.

There’s this slightly odd US perception that the british empire was the only colonial power, because you’re an ex british colony I think?

Wow, when I first saw this map I knew the country borders were suspicious. But that Norway would be covered because of WWII is absurd.

My farfar fought with the british trying to take Norway from the nazis and guess where he was from. Norway, when the nazis invaded norway many sailors including my farfar went down to scotland, and helped with the war effort from there. It’s not a colonial invasion to help people who have fled to your country to ask for help.

It also feels a lot like it’s kind of minimising the awfulness of colonialism to put it in the same category tbh.

I’ve said it before on this post but I’d really recommend the book “All the Countries We’ve Ever Invaded (And the Few we never got round to)” because it offers a way more nuanced look at…basically all these countries highlighted in a pretty nice A to Z format
