“Well MY ancestors came here legally” yeah, because back then legal basically meant surviving the boat ride. I assure you, if great-great-great grandfather Seamus needed years worth of paperwork and possibly an expensive lawyer, he and the rest of the tenement would scrape by without the right documentation.
“My grandmother wove in me a tapestry that was impossible to unwind,” Vigo said. “Since then, I’ve dedicated my life to the sea, just as those who have come before me.”
Like the 23 women before her, Vigo has never made a penny from her work. She is bound by a sacred ‘Sea Oath’ that maintains that byssus should never be bought or sold.
Instead, Vigo explained that the only way to receive byssus is as a gift. […]
“Byssus doesn’t belong to me, but to everyone,” Vigo asserted. “Selling it would be like trying to profit from the sun or the tides.”
More recently, a Japanese businessman approached Vigo with an offer to purchase her most famous piece, ‘The Lion of Women’, for €2.5 million. It took Vigo four years to stitch the glimmering 45x45cm design with her fingernails, and she dedicated it to women everywhere.
“I told him, ‘Absolutely not’,” she declared. “The women of the world are not for sale.”

Leola One Feather is a Lakota grandmother and activist. She has 13 different grandchildren on the rez she has to take care of. Their ages range from 3-17. Please help out this family in need by buying school supplies from their wishlist. Its all going directly to them!
Ok so update on Leola and her family. Almost everything has arrived and they are so so grateful to everyone who donated and want to thank each and every one of you personally!!!!!! 😁💜💙💚💛🌸🌺💐 And right on time because school is starting tomorrow!
There are basically only the laptops left on Leola’s wishlist. Leolas has two 17 year old half Lakota half Black granddaughters who are both going to college next year. There are used versions of the laptops we are trying to get them. The total comes out to $341.22. If everyone gave only $1 we could quickly raise that money!!!
Ok so the second laptop’s order was cancelled. I had never realized it and finally just talked to Leola to check in on them. We are currently $89.57 away from getting the second one used on Amazon. There are other things on the list as well if you want to help that way.
Please donate to Leola’s paypal so we can quickly get the laptop to her other granddaughter or buy other things from the list!!! I also set up an ebay account for her to sell her beaded jewelry on if anyone’s interested.
