“everyone’s been through trauma!” no, no they haven’t. hardship ≠ trauma.
trauma is described by the dsm as “outside the normal range of human experiences”
OUTSIDE. THE NORMAL RANGE. OF HUMAN EXPERIENCES
that’s… an unusual definition, because trauma to many people includes family dying for example and most people… probably have experienced something like that?
and i mean even if it’s not most people there are millions of people who have trauma so to say that’s “out of the range of normal human experience” is weird, and i also don’t understand the purpose of saying that
OP… your post legit only applies to like financially stable people in positions of power socially…
Sexual abuse, domestic violence, parental neglect, psychological abuse, sexual assault, etc. are traumatic no matter how you spin it, but for disabled people, people of color, lgbt people, poor people, etc. Those are completely normal experiences. They are average. A large amount of people who fit those categories go through them or witness them happening to someone close to them.
For whole groups of people, trauma is entirely normal.
Abuse and assault are normal. Being poor is normal. Bigotry and Discrimination are normal.
Maybe if you come from a middle class family in the suburbs trauma isn’t normal but otherwise: it’s normal.
The kids on tumblr you’re convinced don’t know what real trauma is have probably actually gone through some real violence and terror in their lives.

I know I’ve posted numerous times about how welfare fraud is in fact very, very rare and welfare programs have lower fraud loss rates than things like businesses. Which is true, but it’s also true that most actual technical welfare fraud doesn’t look much like the stereotype either. Pretty much the only people who “get rich” off fraud are service end things like stores, hospitals, etc. Nobody else really gets rich from lying on their food stamp paperwork.
Welfare fraud looks less like “cadillac and mansion” and more like:
a disabled person lies about their level of mobility because medicaid will often only cover wheelchairs if you need them in the house, not if you need them to go out or do anything outside of the house
a poor woman claims her boyfriend lives separately from her because the amount he contributes to her and their kids counts against her less if it’s listed as childsupport instead of part of the household income and that small difference can be enough to keep the children from going hungry
a poor person sells part of their food stamps and lives on things like instant ramen because almost nobody gets cash assistance anymore and they need things like toilet paper or tooth paste
a disabled person who could not hold down a regular job sells $100 a month in homemade crafts and doesn’t report it because they might have to spend months or even years re-fighting their social security case if they reported it
a homeless person makes more than $20 a month begging but lists their income as zero because that’s less confusing
other things like that
A lot of that is just survival. It’s not a system set up in a way that makes it easy to even live unless you “cheat”. People aren’t doing it to get rich, they do it to cling to the very basics and just manage to live. I don’t blame people who violate the laws to keep their heads above water, I blame the people who set up a horrific system like this and who benefit from harming and exploiting poor people.
If you haven’t already heard, Donald Trump has slashed funding for advertising the Affordable Care Act enrollment period by 90%. He has also cut the funding for local organizations that help consumers navigate the buying process by 41%. The time period to enroll has also been cut in half, giving people only 6 weeks to sign up between: November 1, 2017 – December 15, 2017.
These cuts mean that less people will be aware of the enrollment period and less people will be insured. Less people uninsured will also mean a drive up in premiums, making insurance unaffordable for many more. This is an intentional move to make good on his promise to let the Affordable Care Act “implode,” but it will hurt many people in the process. Many people will unknowingly miss the enrollment period and we cannot let this happen.
Since the president is unwilling to inform the citizens we must take action into our own hands. Spread awareness about open enrollment. I made the image above so you can save it and share it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and whatever other forms of social media you might use. Tell your family and friends. Do whatever you can to make sure that people who need this information get this information.
Signal boost.
Let’s do the advertising that our Authoritarian-in-Chief refuses to do.
Let’s get so many new people enrolled into the ACA that it will have the numbers it needs to actually work.
The Repugnicans are trying to dismantle the very structure of our society. But if we all pitch in, we can at least slow them down, a little.
And if more people are signed up for ACA (Obama-Care) for 2018, you can bet your bippy that representatives will be even less willing to repeal it.
This is also a reminder to vote in local elections before 2016 (Virginia, for one, is electing a new governor and new state legislature this November).
I was told by my professors that Kitty Genovese was a 28-year-old unmarried woman who was attacked, raped, and brutally murdered on her way home from her shift as manager of a bar. I was told that numerous people witnessed the attack and her cries for help but didn’t do anything because they “assumed someone else would”. Nobody intervened until it was too late.
Now… is it likely that people overheard Kitty’s cries for help and ignored them because they thought someone else would deal with it? Or, perhaps, did they ignore her because they knew she was a lesbian and just didn’t care?
Maybe that’s not the case. Maybe it was just a random attack. Maybe her neighbours didn’t know she was gay, or didn’t care.
But it’s a huge chunk of information to leave out about her in a supposedly scientific study of events, since her sexuality made her much more vulnerable to violent crimes than the average person. And it’s a dishonour to her memory.
RIP Kitty Genovese. Society may only remember you for how you died, but I will remember you for who who were.
this was one of the first lessons I had in psych too and we were never told about this either nor was it in any of the reading materials
I never knew this.
I also never knew this about Kitty Genovese, but I do know that, in fact, many of the dozen (not thirty-eight) people who witnessed some part of the attack (which took place after 3AM, on a chilly night in March when most people’s windows were closed) tried to help in some way.
One shouted out his window for the attacker to leave her alone, which did successfully scare the man off temporarily.
Another called the police but, seeing her still on her feet, said only that there had been a fight but the woman seemed to be okay.
And when Kitty Genovese was finally attacked in a vestibule where she couldn’t be seen from outside, Karl Ross, a neighbor, saw what was happening but was too frightened himself to go to her rescue–so he started calling other neighbors to ask what he should do. Eventually one of them told him to call the police, which he did, and the woman he called, Sophie Farrar, rushed out to help Kitty even though she didn’t know whether the attacker was gone.
Kitty Genovese died in the arms of a neighbor who tired to help and comfort her while they waited for the police and ambulance to arrive. Kitty was in fact still alive, although mortally wounded, when the ambulance reached the scene.
The man who saw the final stabbing? Who panicked and called other neighbors first instead of the police? The man who said, infamously, that he “didn’t want to get involved” because he was reluctant to turn to the police for help? He was thought to be gay himself. He was a friend of Kitty and Mary Ann’s. After being interviewed by the police he took a bottle of vodka to Mary Ann and sat with her, trying to comfort her.
So, no. I don’t think the evidence indicates that Kitty Genovese’s neighbors let her die because she was a lesbian, because Kitty Genovese’s neighbors tried to help.
(Also, going by the content of the murderer’s confession, it was indeed a random attack.)
how on EARTH was this “scientifically” studied but the details gotten so wrong and the wrong as hell conclusion published and taught in schools?!?!?! where were those scientists observation skills?! on vacation?!
How to take facts and turn them into an urban legend that gets taught in schools: Make a bad made-for-t.v.-movie about it, watch it, believe everything the movie says, annnnnnnd go! That’s how it gets taught as this supposed “scientific study.” Someone got fucking lazy.
There’s also a doc on Netflix made by her brother, which doesn’t get into her orientation or romantic life but you do get to hear from Sophie herself as well as other living witnesses and you get more background on the killer (who was just a straight up sociopath who’s only goal was to murder someone that night). This case is taught in SO many psychology and sociology classes to prove that like altruism isn’t real or some BS.
Professor’s should NOT be telling people that this case was “SCIENTIFICALLY STUDIED.” It’s true that this case inspired some studies to look into the bystander effect, but the popular story of “no one helped,” was actually created by the New York Times; the current police commissioner, allegedly to deflect some heat around other issues the police were dealing with, mentioned the story including the inflated “38 witnesses” number to a NYT reporter over dinner. (The suspected number of actual witnesses is thought to be much lower.) No one has ever interviewed those imaginary 38 people as part of a study.
Vet clinics often have litters of kittens to raise. Either they’re too young for a shelter, too sickly, or the clinic intends to adopt them out when they’re big enough. Whatever the reason, nurses often end up raising kittens and giving them ‘temporary’ names.
The intention of these temporary names is that if you give the kitten a stupid name, you have something to call it other than ‘the middle black male’, but because it’s a stupid name you wont get emotionally attached and end up keeping it. Again.
Which is how some nurses end up with cats that have names like ‘Flea bus’ and ‘Trash bag’.
Just a warning to everybody, please be aware of white supremacists bloggers posing as minorities saying wildly inflammatory, offensive things in an effort to bait other groups and sow discord within the left.
I just caught out a blogger pretending to be Black saying Jews were leaches on society and that Hitler had been in the right. They started off with a vaguely SJ-sounding post but then their language descended into alt-right speak real fucking quick, and I knew there was no goddamn way they were who they claimed. One look at their archive proved they were a white supremacists who had actually posted years worth of violent anti-Black commentary.
I know it’s easy to get worked up and taken in on here when we feel attacked—we’ve all fallen victim to trolls—but if somebody claims to be a Black person but uses Nazi language about Jews, or a Jewish person but uses German eugenics-based anti-immigrant language, or Arab but uses old Confederate language about Black people, and so on, please be very wary, check, and block.
They have been doing this on Twitter for a while, creating almost laughably bad accounts of what racists think Jews, Black folks, Latinxs, etc. sound like, and obviously Tumblr is the next frontier.
Just beware, trust your instincts, and remember: IF IT SOUNDS LIKE A NAZI, IT’S PROBABLY A NAZI.
