Ouch.

I was never ever allowed to say any of it was bad, and it led to me having a long string of…friends and acquaintances that I’d just put up with, because I’d been taught over and over that if you care about someone, you put up with abusive behavior.

Way too close to home, in multiple senses. I couldn’t even really start processing just how fucked-up some behavior was until I had been out of the situation for a few years. Had trouble even admitting how bad some of it was to myself.

What’s extra bad is that I don’t think my mother ever figured out in her own life that emotionally abusive behavior isn’t just something you have to put up with. Which really doesn’t excuse spreading the joy and taking out her own problems on other people, but yeah. Trying very hard here not to keep some patterns rolling.

(Disclaimer on some framing in the original linked comment. Not surprisingly, one of the big things that kept getting used against me was my own supposed craziness. And I really don’t want to turn that around on anybody else. How you choose to treat other people is the relevant thing, no matter what else is going on.)

These are the people who came here after the earthquake. There are a whopping 50,000 of them, they’re not impacting the economy in any way. The only justification of this is white nationalism.

This is about Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for people who are unable to return to their home country safely. The Trump administration already revoked it for  approximately 2,500 Nicaraguans, and for Sudanese nationals. They haven’t yet decided on 57,000 Hondurans and over 200,000 Salvadorans who are in the same situation but it’s not looking good. There’s a definite pattern here.

ACTION ALERT: ACA Repeal is Back – We Need YOU!

autisticadvocacy:

ACA repeal is back, and it’s just as bad as ever.
Health care and Medicaid for people with disabilities are being threatened once again in order to pay for a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. Congress is using the current Senate tax bill to try to repeal the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act – the part that makes insurance under the ACA affordable for most people. If this bill passes, 13 million people are expected to lose health insurance, and insurance premiums will go up by 10 percent.  This bill will also raise the deficit, which will be used to justify cuts to Medicaid and home and community based services.

Your Senators are home this week, and they need to hear from you. This whole week, Senators will be back in their home states, talking to constituents during the Thanksgiving recess. Constituent visits matter because they let Senators directly see and hear how bills will change the lives of the people they represent. We need to show up.

  • Go to your local offices and tell your elected officials why this is dangerous. To find your local office, use contactingcongress.org. You can contact these offices to set up a meeting – this is one of the most effective ways to get your point across to an elected official. Check out our toolkit for more information.
  • Talk to your elected officials at town halls and public appearances. Your senators’ websites will list their upcoming appearances, and you can also check Townhallproject.com
  • Go to a local rally. Lots of local organizations will be having events about tax reform and saving the ACA. They need a disability presence.
  • Call your elected officials and tell them to vote NO. You can find their information at contactingcongress.org.

When you call, you can use our script:

My name is [your full name]. I’m a constituent of Senator [Name], and I live in [your town]. I’m calling to ask the Senator to vote NO on the tax bill and repealing the Affordable Care Act. This bill would take health insurance away from 13 million Americans, and leave the door open to cut Medicaid. Disabled people in our state would lose access to lifesaving health care and be forced into institutions – all to fund a massive tax break for the wealthiest Americans.

People with disabilities like [me/my family member/my friends] are not disposable, and our health care is not your trust fund. Please vote AGAINST any tax bills that repeal the individual mandate or otherwise damage the Affordable Care Act. We’re counting on you to do the right thing.

We won this battle before, and if we fight just as hard, we can win it again. With our community’s health care at risk, we cannot afford to stand down. Help us tell Congress to keep their #HandsOff our health care!

#10yrsago UK tax-man repeatedly hemorrhages personal financial info of 25 MILLION Brits

mostlysignssomeportents:

A reader writes, “Guy working for UK Revenue burns all 25m personal records held by the department onto two CDs. Sends them to the National Audit Office, unregistered. They don’t arrive. So he sends off another couple of CDs. They don’t arrive either. Then the head of the department resigns just as it’s about to be made public. It’s the names, addresses, dates of birth and the employment and bank details of 25 million people. Who needs Russian hackers when you’ve got the UK government?”

The Chancellor admitted that HMRC had made the same mistake on several occasions in the past six months…

Mr Darling’s admission that “I regard this as an extremely serious failure,” was met with derisive laughter from MPs. He advised every parent who claims Child Benefit to look very closely at their bank statements in the coming weeks for signs of fraud or identity theft.
