Farming systems need to fit into their natural and social environment. Sometimes we describe this as a socio-ecological niche.
Reblogging again because it’s such a good and clear explanation of how your food practices need to fit the local climate and land to be sustainable. Arguing that everyone in the world needs to eat X way doesn’t make sense, no matter what your particular X is. And if you own agricultural land it absolutely matters what you use it for. (My own state is notably guilty here; California grows a lot of high-water-use crops even though we’re always on the edge of drought.)
I drove through that central valley and somebody was growing cotton.
COTTON.
In a desert.
It’s good land, but they need to be growing drought resistant crops. The problem is we don’t want to change our food habits (ironic on a post calling out vegans). We need to teach Americans that there’s a place for sorghum and millet in their diet, for pigeonpea and cowpea. Did you guys know there are even watermelons that need less water to grow? They’re yellow and I personally find them tastier than the traditional red fleshed variety.
Herbs. Many herbs will grow well in extremely dry conditions on poor soil.
Most of America’s 9,000 7-Eleven stores are owned by franchisees, many
of them immigrants; the owners’ contracts with 7-Eleven corporate allows
the company to pull their franchises if they violate US law.
The current CEO of 7-Eleven is Joe DePinto, a West Point grad who got
the job in 2005 and has spent his tenure slowly tightening the screw on
franchisees, demanding business practices that return more profit to
corporate HQ at the expense of the independent operators. As the
franchisees have felt the sting, they’ve fought back, suing the company
over DePinto’s policies.
DePinto has become legendary for his dirty tricks campaign to get rid of
his least-favored franchisees, from hiring private eyes to making
secret recordings.
Now the franchisees allege that DePinto has started snitching on his own
franchisees to ICE, directing government immigration raids against
7-Eleven stores. If these franchise owners are found to have illegally
hired undocumented immigrants, DePinto can cancel their franchise
agreements and kick them out of the business and take over their stores.
The evidence is circumstantial and 7-Eleven denies it, but ICE’s raids
on 7-Eleven stores have targeted owners who have made trouble for the
company.
hey @staff kindly stop marking this stuff under sensitive content
This is awesome.
It’s also worth spreading around that you do not have to take an oath on a Bible. If they’ll let her use this, then you can use pretty much any book, which might matter for atheists and people who’s religion lacks sacred texts.
My dog has a habit where, right before a walk, she just takes a mouthful of kibble and keeps it in her mouth. Then, during the walk, she would decide on a good spot and just spit the kibble out and then eat it.
Friday, November 9th – Hi everyone, I’m Gemma and I’m so sorry to haveto ask this again, but I desperately need help to get groceries + keep my lights on.
As many of you already know, I have been struggling these past few months to make ends meet and pay off my bills and get groceries due to my welfare benefits (Universal Credit and Housing Benefit) having been revoked under the UK’s controversial changes to how benefits are assessed and assigned. I’ve been struggling horribly to keep my heating on as it’s getting into winter where I live, with most nights being 0°C/ 32°F. And as you can see from the image above of my electricity meter, it is back on its emergency credit and I am not due to receive a partial benefit payment until November 25th.
I know that I have asked this a lot these past few months and all the help I have previously received has helped me pay off a few new bills, kept my lights on and helped me to eat and stay warm so far and I absolutely hate to ask for more help but I have no one else to turn to. I’m literally freezing, hungry and drowning in debt at the moment because of my sanctions and since this situation has been ongoing for so long, government aid/food banks are unable to offer me any more assistance.
If anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1/€1, it would literally save my life and, sharing definitely helps just as much as donations. Nobody has to donate if they can’t or don’t want to, I know we’re all struggling. Thank you for your help 💖
November 10th: This is getting incredibly urgent, please help out guys if you can. I desperately need help to keep my lights on and get groceries. Literally anything helps right now. 🙏💖
try to actively stop yourself from thinking of food in terms of moral value. like, sure, eat your vegetables, but having a slice of chocolate cake doesn’t make you irresponsible, lazy, undisciplined, or a bad person, in any way; this mindset we absorbed from all around us is toxic and dangerous and you’ll be happier if you fight against it.
i haven’t seen any noise about this on tumblr yet, but a fire has completely wiped out a small town in california.
they’re calling it the camp fire. over 20,000 residents have been evacuated so far, the last area estimates i heard were over an hour ago at 18,000 acres and its still zero percent contained.
this is the smoke from about 18 miles away from the fire three hours ago. if you know anyone near chico, paradise, oroville or durham california you might want to check they’re okay
UPDATE: 4PM FRI NOV. 9, 2018
the fire has completely walked over paradise, magalia, and much of the rest of butte county. it’s under 10% containment and moving towards chico, which was been mostly evacuated as well. it’s been documented as one of the top 20 deadliest fires seen in california. i know many of the people personally whose lives have been destroyed by this fire. my aunt and uncle’s home, of whom we’re very close to, was demolished last night, same goes for family friends and others who lived in paradise– which is completely gone. there are 5 confirmed deaths, several dozen missing people.
EVACUATION SITES STILL OPEN AS OF 1 HOUR AGO:
Butte County Fairgrounds (199 E Hazel St, Gridley, CA 95948)
Yuba-Sutter Fairground (442 Franklin Ave, Yuba City, CA 95991)
Glenn County Fairgrounds (221 E Yolo St, Orland, CA 95963)
Chester Memorial Hall (22 Gay Street, Chester)
HOW TO HELP/DONATE:
“Currently the best way to contribute is to make a monetary donation via the North Valley Community Foundation website.” -abc7news.com
“Supplies: Hope Center in Oroville (1950 Kitrick Ave Ste. A) is taking donations. Hours: Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Needs: warm clothes, shoes, socks, coats (primarily for elderly residents).” -abc7news.com
the majority of those affected by the fire in paradise were elderly people. and having known paradise and magalia myself for years, it’s not a wealthy part of california. these people will need help, and lots of it.
if you have any questions, you can message me personally or seek information online or from the above references personally.
if you cannot help yourself, please spread the word and reblog. so many wonderful people are going through a terrible thing and need your help.
