Let me talk to you about books.
Specifically, one book. This book.
This book deals with debunking “Neurosexism,” which is a very fancy term for all of that evolutionary psychology bullshit that people spill about those “brain differences” between boys and girls.
This book debunks such myths as:

  • Boys are better at math than girls
  • Women make crappy lawyers/business CEOs/etc, as their brains are not cut out for aggression.
  • Men make crappy counselors/primary school teachers/primary parents/etc, as their brains are not cut out for empathy.
  • MEN ARE BUILT FOR GOING OUT AND HUNTING WHILE WOMEN ARE BUILT FOR STAYING HOME AND BABYMAKING IT’S NOT SEXISM IT’S JUST BIOLOGY
  • And many other such myths.
  • Neurosexism and gender perceptions in multiple races (as this is not a singularly white experience, just as the western world isn’t a singularly white experience)
  • Sex discrimination in the workplace, and how women are (or, more often, are not) allowed to behave
  • How science is used (badly) to support many of these claims
  • Experiences of trans* people, both through interviews and empirical studies.

Furthermore, this book covers topics such as:
AND FINALLY – It is all brilliantly researched, cited, compiled – and it’s easy to read! Cordelia Fine actually manages to be funny while writing this, which I think is important, because it makes all of this information infinitely accessible.

Here’s a PDF for those that cannot afford it/are frightened to buy it.

Aaaaaayyyy guess whose car just started making very expensive noises???

Hey so y’all know me, I’m Natalie, I’m a trans woman and the primary wage-earner in my household.  We’ve been going through some rough patches lately, but I just started a new job last week!  Go me!

Except that now my bullshit fuckin car, the only way I have to get to said job, is in need of some desperate repairs.  In the vein of “I have a few days, tops, before it becomes wildly unsafe to drive” desperate.

If I want to keep my job, I need to somehow come up with about $300 and I need to do that as ASAP as possible.  I can receive money via these here:

Please help if you can, and please reblog.  It would mean so much.

Got the repair estimate and yep they want $3-400.

Y’all really come through, man, we’re already about halfway there, shit. Please keep spreading this. ❤

Hey tumblr family, I’m posting this on behalf of my friend Tara who needs some help, and I’d really appreciate if you could boost this.

Tara is currently living in Manchester (UK) with multiple disabilities, and they are
financially struggling to live on the very limited income they get from
DWP.

Tara lives with a number of physical and mental conditions that
make life difficult for them, including: Ehler Danlos Syndrome, Postural
Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux
Disorder, Post-Nasal Drip, Complex PTSD (post traumatic stress
disorder), Dissociative Identity Disorder, ADHD (Attention Deficit and
Hyperactivity Disorder). What this results in is: severe mobility
issues; chronic pain and fatigue; amnesia/memory problems; difficulty
eating, drinking, talking and breathing; weak joints that dislocate
easily; processing issues dealing with stressful or triggering
situations; and severe social anxiety.

They were homeless for
about six months after having to flee a chain of abusive living
situations, which only ended towards the end of 2017. During this time
they were forced to stay in unhealthy, unsuitable and unaffordable
living conditions which were detrimental to their health and safety. Things like being made to climb stairs to get to their room, not being allowed
visitors or food in their room or to use the hotel restaurant/bar. They were also
subjected to invasive room checks and didn’t have any cooling options (not even an open window) during a heatwave. Despite struggling with isolation,
starvation, lack of access to medical care or necessary dental care,
overheating, and acute cardiac symptoms, homeless
services recorded their living situation as “suitable” despite their continual protests, and routinely
recorded that Tara had no complaints against their will. During this
time Tara’s only option to eat was to buy takeaway, which along with the
accommodation being unaffordable resulted in them burning through their
savings and amassing large credit card debts.

(If you’re wondering why they were housed in an unsuitable lodging room in a hotel, this is now a common thing in the UK. There’s a lack of suitable housing for people needing help, so they’re paying hotels and pubs to rent out their rooms to people in need, while exploiting the people in need by putting them in often unsuitable accommodation, ultimately to dissuade people from seeking help. The UK benefits system is currently Monstrous for a lot of folks in need who don’t have the support of friends and family who can afford to help them.)

While they finally have better lodgings and a limited amount of Personal Assistant
support (which they found independently without help from the govt), they are however without financial assistance
or government funding to pay for said carer, which means they have had to pay for their care out of their own pocket, on top of the extra living costs
that come with being multiply disabled. They couldn’t even get a wheelchair on the NHS right now due to high wait times and had to pay for one themselves, all of which has resulted in living under a lot of debt, and no means to get out of it.

What we hope to achieve with this fundraiser for Tara is:

-being able to pay off some of their debts

-being able to afford to pay for medical necessities such as medicine and consistent visits from a carer/personal assistant

-clothes that actually fit

-being able to replace some of the belongings they lost when they were forced to move from home to home to escape abuse.

If you can, please consider helping. And if you can’t give a donation, signal boosting will help a lot. Thank you ❤

You may have noticed I haven’t been online for a few weeks. That’s because
I’ve been very sick with an upper respiratory infection that left me
hardly able to speak or leave bed for weeks, and cost me dearly in
medications.

I’ve just been to my fourth doctor appointment this month and been slapped with an enormous, unexpected bill. This has come atop my insurance premiums now taking a quarter of my tiny income each month, and being prescribed
important and expensive new medications not covered by insurance.

I was able
to work out a payment plan for my doctor bill but even the smallest
payment possible leaves me just barely enough to afford my prescriptions
for the month, with mayyyybe $10 left over for food and transportation
and any other necessities – including decongestants for the hacking,
horrible cough I still have.

I’m multiply disabled and even
before these huge medical expenses, my total income is around half what a full
time minimum wage job pays.

I hate to ask again, but I’m a
little desperate. If you’re a financially comfortable adult who
genuinely wants to help,
I have paypal and a wishlist of food and other necessities.

I would be deeply grateful for even a dollar. Please don’t feel pressured, though – I know things are tough for a
lot of people right now.
