i got one of these from someone yesterday and then immediately a follow-up warning that it was spam and that they didn’t send it, so apparently the blogs these come from can be real people who are not doing it on purpose

Brood parasites
One of my favorite evolutionary developments! Other species of birds will lay eggs in finch nests, leaving the finches to do extra work raising their young.
This has led to an evolutionary arms race, which has led to extreme gape coloration.
Among the most successful brood parasites is the cowbird. Like most brood parasites, the cowbird chick is larger, has a larger gape and is more likely to get more food than it’s nestmates.
But as you can see, the gape of the cowbird is a slightly different color than the other chicks’. It has a red gap and white rictal flanges.
This difference spurs the evolutionary pressure for parents to see color and fine patterns, so they can select for their chicks when feeding.
Not to be outdone, brood parasites then felt the selective pressure to more closely mimick the nestlings, and the race was ON.
We have such stunning likenesses as the pin-tailed wydah (parasite, left) and the common waxbill (right).
Gouldian finches are among the champions. (The adults are quite stunning, btw)
These guys are parasitized by cuckoos, also champions in the game.
Gouldian finches are cavity dwellers, so their chicks hang out in the dark most of the time.

I’ve been busy studying web development & design this year, and I’m just about ready to try starting a career at last – but as of right now I’ll need some assistance while I put in the finishing touches (such as expanding my portfolio, learning some in-demand frameworks, and getting a better grasp of other professional-level stuff like production tools).
I have to make rent for this month, and a bit of what I owe my roommate besides, and also, y’know, eat and pay bills and generally not die.
If you’re interested: here’s a prototype of my website, where I’ll be showing off what I’ve been working on. Right now there’s some basic design, some interactivity, some dynamic content, and a Wikipedia-parsing web app that implements a feature MediaWiki lacks (recursive category search and a “random in category” button). As of this moment I’m working to clean up existing code, build a Reddit web app (that’d display themed content of choice with featured comments/etc), add much fancier design, greatly expand and improve my old physics demo to turn it into an actual game with “incremental”-style features (you know Cookie Clicker? that, but with orbital mechanics instead of clicking), edit and put up some of my higher-effort tumblr writing, and above all get a steady income source.
Also, I’m overall quite ready to talk employment. I know HTML/CSS/Javascript, the basics of Node, can work with version control, have a grasp of non-terrible web design, 1+ yr experience with commercial writing, business-related research and customer communications, have planned and implemented a logisitcs & sales automation system, am currently learning more web-related skills such as Vue and working with Webpack… So if any of you need some long-distance work done, or know of any relevant opportunities – either on a freelance basis or a junior/apprentice position – go ahead and contact me:

You may have noticed I haven’t been online for a few weeks. That’s because
I’ve been very sick with a respiratory infection that left me
hardly able to speak or leave bed for almost a month, and cost me dearly in
medications.
I’ve just been to my fourth doctor appointment this month and been slapped with an enormous, unexpected bill. This has come atop my insurance premiums now taking a quarter of my tiny income each month, and being prescribed
important and expensive new medications not covered by insurance. All in all, my medical expenses now cost more than my rent. I’m multiply disabled and my total income is about half of what a full time minimum wage job pays.
I was able
to work out a payment plan for my doctor bill but even the smallest
payment possible leaves me just barely enough to afford my prescriptions
for the month, with mayyyybe $10 left over for food and transportation
and any other necessities for the next 3ish weeks.
I hate to ask again, but I’m a
little desperate. If you’re a financially comfortable adult who
genuinely wants to help,

Boozhoo (hello), my name is Ken, I am a disabled Ojibwe artist from northern Wisconsin who has recently relocated to northern Minnesota to be closer to my children and have better access to healthcare.
