Black LGBTQ center in Dallas damaged by arson attack

gaywrites:

Last week in Dallas, Texas, an LGBTQ center that primarily serves Black gay and bi men and transgender women suffered fire damage in an intentional arson attack.

Abounding Prosperity was broken into on Friday morning, and someone set a fire using an accelerant. A back office was destroyed and the rest of the center had smoke damage.

The center, which operates out of a renovated home, provides counseling, medical, and STD prevention services to an estimated 2,000 people each year and seeks to address health, social, and economic disparities affecting queer black men. Its services are on hold while the staff deals with the fire damage.

One of its clients, Marcus Simpson, has been relying on Abounding Prosperity since he was a teenager. Whoever committed the arson is “a monster,” he told WFAA. “I mean, to see them do something like this in a small community that’s trying to help build the community, it’s sad.”

Although authorities are unsure of the arsonist’s motives, Abounding Prosperity CEO Kirk Myers told the station he believes the perpetrator wanted to intimidate the people the center serves. “You know where my mind immediately goes is that the political climate in the world we’re living in today is creating an atmosphere where this sort of activity could be acceptable in someone’s mind,” Myers said.

Sending thoughts of strength and recovery so that they can resume their good work soon.

That autism feel when you’re trying to communicate with an allistic and they suddenly go “Don’t give me that attitude! Don’t talk to me like that! No, don’t you act like you don’t know what you’re doing!” and you have absolutely no idea about what you did wrong.

imagine the SOUND of someone walking down the street wearing those

these shoes exude the same kind of pull that I imagine powerful and corrupting magical items to possess; that is, upon seeing this cursed image my first thought is “these are an abomination,” yet somehow, simultaneously, I feel compelled to wear them, against both my will and my better judgement

On this day in music history: August 1, 1981 – At 12:01 am, MTV, the world’s first 24 hour cable music network is launched. A joint venture between Warner Communications and American Express (i.e. Warner-Amex Cable, later Viacom, Inc.), the cable television channel originally shows music videos and concerts during its round the clock broadcasts (VJ segments are pre-taped). The concept for the channel is created by Bob Pittman, who later becomes president and CEO of MTV Networks. The original MTV VJ’s are J.J. Jackson, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, Nina Blackwood, and Martha Quinn (Jackson, Hunter, and Blackwood leave in 1986, Goodman in 1987 and Quinn in 1991). The first music video aired on the channel  is the clip for The Buggles’ 1979 single “Video Killed The Radio Star”, making a symbolic and prophetic statement on how the visual aspect of music will impact it in the future. The network revolutionizes the way music is marketed and promoted to a mass audience, forever changing the music industry. In the months and years that follow, MTV spawns numerous competitors and imitators including Video Jukebox, Night Tracks (on SuperStation WTBS out of Atlanta), Friday Night Videos (on NBC), ABC Rocks, Cable Music Channel, and D-TV (on the Disney Channel). Later in the decade and the early 90’s, the channel breaks new ground with the introduction of shows like “Yo! MTV Raps”, “Headbanger’s Ball”, “120 Minutes” and “MTV Unplugged”, impacting the rise of Hip Hop, Metal and Alternative Rock into mainstream popularity. By the mid 90’s, with the shifting tides in musical tastes and trends, MTV begins to significantly reduce the number of hours per day that music videos are played, in favor of other programming created for the channel including reality shows like “The Real World”, “The Osbournes, “Jersey Shore” and various game shows, comedy programs and animated programs. Happy 36th Anniversary, MTV!!!

Governors’ Races that Matter for Climate Action – Center for American Progress Action

rjzimmerman:

One of these “competitive” states is Illinois, where a republican (Rauner) is governor. Even though Rauner has been fairly and consistently good for the environment and climate change issues, he hasn’t been an aggressive leader on much of anything excerpt trying to out-do Walker in Wisconsin. I can almost guaranty that Rauner will be so gone, and a Democrat will be returned to the office.

Summary of the article:

President Trump’s intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement has drawn a clear political line for upcoming elections: Are candidates in or out of the global movement to fight climate change? In 2017 and 2018, several competitive races will offer opportunities to answer this question. Voters will have a choice to elect progressive governors who can change their state’s direction on climate, support the goals of the Paris Agreement, and lead where the president has so far failed.

This piece explains what is at stake for states in the face of President Trump’s failure to act on climate change. It then highlights the current state of climate action in seven states with upcoming elections—New Jersey, Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Virginia—as well as some of the opportunities for the next governors to join the fight and increase their state’s ambition. Voters will have a choice to elect leaders who will seize the opportunities presented by the clean energy economy—opportunities that the rest of the world has already embraced that will not only offer economic benefits but also help protect the nation’s clean air and climate.
