BREAKING: As business leaders resign en masse, Pres. Trump asserts he is “ending” his Manufacturing Council, and Strategy & Policy Forum.
Oh my, just reminded with my younger cousins coming up.
I was actually the only grandchild on both sides and not spoiled at all until I was 14. (With the youngest born a few years later.) My mom was not working then, so it looked like an even better idea for her to watch the new baby the whole first summer after my aunt went back to work. Not only because family and trustworthy, but most daycares won’t take children who aren’t toilet trained yet. It worked out pretty well for everyone. We watched both of them a lot after that, too.
So yeah, I was out of school for the summer and usually didn’t mind helping look after the baby. What I did mind were the filthy looks and nasty comments we kept getting whenever we went anywhere, with some people filling in their own assumptions about what must be going on.
My mother thought it was kind of funny. I really did not, and not just because I was 14 and easily embarrassed anyway. She also wasn’t dealing with the worst of the judgments there, other than maybe doing a terrible job of raising me.
But, that did make an impression. I was certainly aware of the hostility too often aimed at teen mothers before that, which is kinda hard to miss. But, that experience really helped bring home how ridiculously common it is, and how quick some people are to jump to judgy assumptions. Not to mention just how openly unpleasant some people feel entitled to be with that. Nobody could possibly deserve that shit, and certainly not for getting pregnant.
man the roman naming system will never cease to amaze me, and to show you what i mean i’m gonna talk about one of the baddest bitches to ever grace ancient roman history: gaius mucius scaevola
before i do that though i should probably explain how roman names work. basically you’ve got a first name (eg gaius) and a family name (eg mucius). now if you’re one rockin dude you might be given a super cool nickname (eg scaevola) to distinguish you from all the other boring ass bitches in your family, and you could then pass it on to your kids if you wanted
so how did scaevola get his nickname? well, way back in fuck-all bc, rome was getting attacked by these guys called the clusians, and our pal gaius mucius decided to sneak in and kill their king, lars porsena. unfortunately on the day that ol gaius did this, the clusian soldiers were getting paid, so porsena and his secretary were dressed up the same and gaius couldn’t tell which was which. so instead of coming back later like a normal person, he went ‘well fvck it’ and decided to murder one of them. turns out he murdered the wrong guy. WHOOPS. understandably porsena was not pleased with this and had gaius captured. however, gaius was one hell of a baller, because he was like ‘whatever, kill me if yov want, bvt some other roman will follow after me, cavse vs romans dont give a SHIT abovt dying’ and to prove his point he STUCK HIS RIGHT HAND IN A FIRE and just sort of stared at porsena while he roasted his own hand like anderson cooper with a mic at a trump rally, and i guess that freaked porsena out so much (which, fair) that he and his buddies packed up and left. after that, everyone started calling our buddy gaius ‘scaevola,’ which means LEFT-HANDED
so basically this dude saves all of rome’s ass by turning his right hand into an episode of gordonius ramsius’s kitchen nightmares, and rome is so thankful that they’re like ‘gaius mucius, you are one bad bitch and we’re gonna give you a nickname so everyone knows what a bad bitch you are’ and the badass nickname they give him is ‘lefty’
And that’s EXACTLY WHY in Italy we keep saying “mettere la mano sul fuoco” (literally “to put [my] hand into the fire”) when you’re extremely sure about something
{other Romance langs like Spanish have this expression too}

sure, when my grandfather fought nazis and fascism he was “a hero” and “on the right side of history” but when i do it im “way too sensitive” and “no better than they are”
Actually, most of the German soldiers defending France after D-Day were not members of the Nazi Party. They were leftover crap soldiers.
Unless your grandfather was Russian, he probably didn’t actually fight a Nazi. Just German regulars.
Also, you must be pretty old, if your grandfather fought the Nazis, say around 65.
Nope, actually you can be as young as in your late 30’s… (my youngest aunt has only just turned 40, my great grandfather aka her grandfather fought the nazis). And the people who enlisted to go fight or (in my great grandfather’s cases) were European and part of the resistance all fought nazism even if they didn’t physically fight a specific nazi: they fought collaborators and allies of the nazis which is the same thing. If you’re trying to blame or shame people who are trying to stop history from repeating itself and basically have a function bing moral compass, you’re in the wrong.
It sounds like that one commenter may be thinking of WWI with the time frame there. Or maybe under the impression that everyone has all their kids very very young, who knows.
I’m in my early 40s, and both my grandfathers were WWII vets. (Neither in the Pacific.) My baby cousin is 25 now–which is toward the younger end for grandparents of that generation, but obviously possible.
Found this little bat statue and thought it looked a little familiar…

Orange Sulphur Butterflies
I know, I know, these are not birds. But they do fly. And they are very cool. The contrast of the delicate insects gathered on the hard gravel creates both contrast and dissonance. So, I posted the photo.
