Êzidî women portrayed in KhalsaAid’s IamYezidi Exhibition to raise awareness of the persecution by ISIS that the religious minority faces.

#IamYezidi explores the individual stories of these women who have often escaped slavery or rescued their sons & daughters from ISIS capture. The stories of their pain, sorrow and continued hardship, but also their iron-like resolve to uphold righteousness and honour are captured through vivid portrait photography by Benjamin Eagle and Khalsa Aid.

Okay, just asking for your personal opinion here – do you think Jane Austen masturbated? I mean, it’s still uncertain whether or not she died a virgin, but if so do you think she had much sexual understanding? I know they were uptight about that shit but I would’ve thought she was clever enough to take control. I mean know the Bronte’s definitely were familiar with the clit but they were more rural and more free to explore their wild sides. I don’t know, what do you think? Thanks.

LOUDER FOR THE HISTORIANS IN THE BACK, MR SCHULTZ

James A. Schultz, 2006, ‘Heterosexuality as a Threat to Medieval Studies,’ Journal of the History of Sexuality, 15, 1, pp.14-29

Good stuff. If people are looking for more work on sex and sexuality in the Middle Ages, I have recommendations:

Helmut Puff, “Same-Sex Possibilities,” in The Oxford Handbook of Women and Gender in the Middle Ages, with good bibliography

Ruth Mazo Karras, Sexuality in the Middle Ages: Doing Unto Others.

Schultz himself wrote a book called Courtly Love, the Love of Courtliness, and the History of Sexuality, which argues (to the best of my recollection) that medieval European courtly literature has models of beauty and desirability that do not reference sexual dimorphism. As a historian, I’m a skeptical of how far he pushes his point, but it’s an interesting work.

Also, a general work on history by a medievalist: Judith Bennett, History Matters: Patriarchy and the Challenge of Feminism (it’s as great as it sounds)

FWIW, I spent most of the decade since Schultz’s article was published in grad school (and, relatedly, at national/international conferences) and never have I ever heard a medievalist try to impose heterosexuality on medieval figures. Results may vary based on departments and sub-disciplines, of course. Also FWIW, Frantzen published a raging anti-feminist screed a while ago, provoking upheaval and pushback throughout medieval studies internationally… and an ongoing conversation.

Do not underestimate the flooding in Texas right now.

forcesunleashed:

Houston has had over 18" of rain fall over the past 24 hours and they’re expecting at least 2ft more in the next 24-36 hours. They are underwater. The rain isn’t going to relent until at least Wednesday.

There are still tornado watches going up, and with shelters and basements under water this will make things worse.

We need to rally together and donate to relief efforts. The Weather Channel has already said that this will be the worst flooding event in US history.

Donate to local crisis control resources. Please share any reliable links and numbers you have. A lot of peoples’ go-tos are The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army, but if you want to avoid those large groups it will be better to donate to local resources. You can also donate to Save the Children, Samaritan’s Purse, and Heart to Heart International.

Coalition for the Homeless runs the shelters in the city of Houston https://www.homelesshouston.org/take-action/donate/

Donate to Corpus Christi’s children’s hospital, which is directly in the path of the storm. http://www.driscollchildrens.org/

Texas Diaper Bank is making disaster relief kits, and you can donate at http://www.texasdiaperbank.org

friend: are you ok?
me: No I’m not, but confronting hard truths and sharing my emotions is difficult for me and i don’t want to burden you with my problems when you have plenty of your own. However, I will be posting a jarring synopsis of my emotional state online for everyone to see, but feel free to ignore it if it makes you uncomfortable. how are you tho?
