Looked it up and anon’s right

It’s defined as a drink other than water.

what the fuck

that’s the worst kind of definition

then wtf is water?

not a beverage

That’s how food businesses(chiefly drink manufacturers I’d wager, tho myb it’s a restaurant thing) use it though; it doesn’t have any bearing on common usage.

Beverage literally translate to “a drink”; it’s a noun-form of beivre, the Old French version of boire, “to drink”. So water is a beverage, outside of specific commercial and advertising uses. Beverage as “a drink other than water” is jargon.

If your language lost, it should die with dignity, not be put on artificial life-support because ‘reasons’

#Sorry but I have no sympathy for that fight#let the dead languages be dead#grumping#controversial opinions#because people always get annoyed with me when I say this#but Gaelic (for example) shouldn’t still exist

———–

Gaelic hasnt been lost.  It’s never died or been brought back.  There’s an unbroken line of native speakers going back to the beginning of the language.  That doesn’t seem like a ‘lost’ language to me.  Furthermore I’m not sure what ‘artificial life-support’ means in this context.  Gaelic is given funding for schools because there’s still native speakers of the language.  It’s no more artificial than money being given to schools for English language lessons.

If anything is ‘artificial’ its the imposition of a foreign language
(English) into a Gaelic majority zone and native speakers having to
fight for decades to be able to be taught in their own language.  Native speakers being forced to learn English to exist within their own regions because a central government would not allow services to be given in a people’s own language.

But then the clock only goes back so far with people who wish that minority languages would just die.  There’s nothing artificial about shooting someone but suddenly it becomes an ‘artificial’ act to maybe phone an ambulance?

“There’s nothing artificial about shooting someone but suddenly it becomes an ‘artificial’ act to maybe phone an ambulance?” — THIS RIGHT HERE

Also just gonna point out here:

In the UK, the languages Gaelige, Gaelic, Cymraeg and Kernewek (that’s Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Cornish respectively) didn’t just “die out.” There was a concerted effort by the English to kill them off.

For example, in Wales, if a child was heard speaking Welsh in a classroom, they’d be given a “Welsh Not”, a wooden plaque engraved with “WN” to hang around their neck. They’d pass it onto the next child heard speaking Welsh, and whoever had the Welsh Not at the end of the day was punished – usually with a beating.

Kernewek was revived after a long hard struggle by the Cornish folk, and is now being taught again, but a lot about it has been lost because everyone who grew up speaking it has died.

And languages are never revived “just because.” The language of a place can offer so much insight into its history, so if you’re content to let a language die then you’re content to let history die.

People talk about “dead” languages as if they dwindle away gradually, naturally coming to an end and evolving into something else, but that’s rarely the case. Languages like Cymraeg and Gaelige and especially Kernewek didn’t have the chance to die with dignity, they were literally beaten out of my parents and grandparents.

Is it any wonder every other country hate the English? We invade their country, steal their history, claim pieces of their history as ours or flat out re-write it, and kill every part of their culture that we can.

It’s a miracle that any of the Celtic languages survived, so even if you don’t see the point in keeping them alive, the actual natives of each country we’ve fucked over are clinging onto what heritage they have left through the only thing they can: their language.

Hey OP, póg mo thóin!

*snerk* xD

I would like to point all of these “just let it die” assholes directly at Hebrew.

The language was effectively dead. It had been murdered and forced-assimilated away.

But there was this dude named Ben Yehuda.

And he said “no.”

“The language of my people for four thousand years or more,” he said, “should not stop existing because of a bunch of assholes.” (Okay, this is a dramatic retelling. He probably didn’t actually say assholes.)

So he started an official movement to recreate Hebrew as closely as possible to how it had been spoken about a thousand years prior.

Today, ancient Hebrew is spoken by millions of Jews around the world weekly in our prayers and Torah readings, and modern Hebrew is the official language of eight and a half million people–many of them having been born speaking it as a first language. Many people in the first group also speak at least some modern Hebrew–and it’s possible you do, too! A lot of loan words from Hebrew and Yiddish have made their way into English (like klutz, mensch, and kibitz).

That’s hardly “on life support.” Hebrew is growing, living, and thriving because of the Enlightenment efforts of the 1800s. The same COULD be done for languages like Welsh, Navajo, and Basque if the larger powers that be said “this is important” rather than forcing a giant bastion of culture–the language in which a people lived, loved, thought, told stories, and explained their world–to die.

there is a distinct difference between language that has died because it stopped meeting the needs of the people using it and language that has been deliberately killed by oppressors

I remember reading a linguist’s thoughts on this a while back. They noted that languages are not only an important cultural heritage, but also an important historical artifact that offers a look into the unique perspective of a culture. The things that we name and how we name them reflect our values and priorities. For example, Inuktitut is said to have several different words for snow that categorize them by various metrics. This reflects a need for communication regarding what the snow was like, which naturally would be important to a people who deal with snow on a near constant basis. There are nine different ways to say “you’re welcome” in Native Hawaiian, each responding to a different level of gratitude. You don’t respond the same way to “thanks for giving me a donut” as you do to “thanks for saving my life.” This reflects a culture of accountability and honor.

The study and preservation of indigenous languages worldwide is vital to the enrichment of our global culture. You don’t have to be fluent in multiple languages to be able to understand the perspective that is offered by nurturing this tradition. Our ability to communicate is one of our greatest gifts – what a waste it would be to throw that away simply because providing institutions of cultural heritage is too inconvenient.

i told my current employer that i wrote speculative fiction in my spare time to hone my abilities as a writer and learn how to engage with online communities and that i had amassed a following because of said writing and engagement (code for ‘procrastinates by writing stevetony fanfic, posts it to tumblr, and answers asks about it later’) and now i’m in line to be the head of communications. its All About Phrasing, you got this and i believe in you.

#here’s an adulthood pro-tip: we’re all just bullshitting to some degree

This is timely, because I literally just was working on a friend’s resume who does commissions on tumblr, and I wrote it like this:

Freelance Artist
• Created custom artwork for a variety of domestic and international clients.
• Communicated effectively with customers in order to facilitate and execute their visions according to their individual needs.
• Invoiced and processed payments via PayPal processing service.
• Met deadlines, sustained a high level of customer satisfaction, and cultivated a database of clients.
• Used social media to find and connect with customers.

Never underestimate the work that you’re doing!

Oh, yes, my friends. The earlier you learn to sell yourself with unmitigated bullshit, the better off you’ll be.

But its not bullshit.  Really.  You *do* all of those things, but since you don’t do them in an “approved” setting (i.e. work) we’ve been conditioned to discount them.

Professionally, I am a senior solutions technician for custom software designed for the bottling industry.  In English – I work a help desk for a very small software company with very large clients, and I’ve worked there a really long time.

I am also manage the logistics, accounts receivables and an responsible for creating and maintaining a budget and long-term financial planning for a group of four, as well as meet transportation needs, medical supply orders, and resolve conflicts between those same four people.  I am also on call 24/7 for emergency services including, but not limited to, transportation issues, scheduling conflict, limited medical issues and escalation to specialists if needed.  In English – I’m a mom with a spouse and two kids.  My responsibilities in the house are paying the bills, helping to manage my son’s diabetes, his and my husbands mental illnesses, make sure that everyone has a ride to all of their extra-curricular activities, etc.  Since I don’t get paid for that, it doesn’t count, even though all of those skills are directly applicable to the workplace.

in before nazis twist this around and say we’re being intolerant

I read an interesting article once that said that in a tolerant society, the only way to keep it working was to become intolerant to intolerance if that makes sense.

It’s called the irony of tolerance or something like that. And it was written in the 1940’s. Give you one guess as to what inspired that article.

Full quote on the paradox of tolerancehttps://www.goodreads.com/quotes/25998-the-so-called-paradox-of-freedom-is-the-argument-that-freedom

simplified image version:

always say “fuck right off” to fascism

Every single one of those intolerant people

Every single one

Without one single exception

will claim and has claimed – in sincere belief – that they were only getting rid of the people who were intolerant toward them. The only way to pick out the claims at that point and decide who is accommodated is “Who do we like more? What kind of person do we innately like and want to reward, and what kind of person do we innately hate and want to punish?” This is the only way it has ever happened and the only way it will ever happen, ever, even if you live to be a trillion years old.

Popper is wrong. He is obviously wrong. “We can’t tolerate the intolerant” will always, with one hundred percent accuracy, map to “We can’t tolerate people the socially powerful dislike.” But the idea that we are tolerant and they are intolerant and so we can violate the principles we hate them for violating and it’s still all noble and righteous and good is just too satisfying. It’s too rewarding. It feels too good. Every single person without one single fucking exception will see themselves this way. The idea can never be cast off. It can never be defeated, and we can never move past it.

The cycle will never end. Humanity’s future is a flat, worthless, meaningless circle.

No, the way we pick out the claims is to look at who is advocating for discriminating against/deport/hurt groups of people for the sole reason said groups exist; and who doesn’t. That is objectively verifiable.

If you’re incapable of knowing the difference – especially if you feel the need to defend literal Nazis – that’s your problem, not mine. Stop claiming that your personal problems are “human nature”.

You are not and never will be capable of knowing the difference. You will only be capable of determining that the group you like is calling for “ethnic justice” and must be obeyed, while the group you dislike is intolerant and must be excised.

Your political foes will make the opposite conclusion based on their self-serving emotions. Then you scream at each other forever and ever. Everything becomes a popularity game. You mark the people you dislike as deserving of exclusion no matter what they said. We can literally see this entire process happening now. It does not stop happening.

The cycle does not end. Ever. There is no virtue and there is no restraint. Ever.

Okay, except that’s 100% total bullshit. There are objective tests, galore, that can be used, and have been used, and which some people use consistently even when this is in the short term against their interests. (I would argue that it’s not really possible for justice to be against the long-term interests of most people.)

Any time you claim that no human can ever act virtuously, that’s gonna be bullshit. Yes, I know it really looks that way. You’re stunningly depressed and have very severe distorted thinking on the topic. But you get to the point where you’re making fact claims that can be easily disproven, and at that point, I think you have a responsibility to say “no, wait, my brain is full of shit again”.

If what you are saying were actually true, you could not possibly say it. Because that would be a human saying a thing not calculated to make them more popular.

You are the existence proof. You have more virtue than you believe the world contains.

My Daughter’s Transplant Fund, and generally trying to keep my family alive

My 9 (almost 10) year old daughter has stage four Chronic Kidney Disease. She is not yet on dialysis; she has been on-hold status for the deceased donor waiting list for about one year. She may go active on it if a potential live donor doesn’t work out; in either case, I’m hoping she’ll get a new kidney within the next twelve months, perhaps sooner.

When that happens, we’ll be essentially moving to Seattle for three to four month. If with a live donor, then we can schedule and arrange; If she receives a deceased donor kidney, we need to get there ASAP, within 24 hours of the call. In either case, post-transplant, we will be visiting the hospital frequently for labs and clinic visits.

Unfortunately, upon returning from her yearly check in visit at Seattle Children’s Hospital, the family car was repossessed (on 4/2/18). If I am able to, I hope to persuade the bank to let me reinstate the loan and retrieve the car once the GAP insurance pays for the original loan I took out with them for the previous car (which didn’t happen because I was busy trying to maintain life with kids, pretty much, and failed to quickly get them the documents they needed, which are now sent). Though they will probably also want repo fees and/or attorney fees, so I don’t know.

I will call them Monday (4/9/18) and plead my case. Hopefully they’ll have some pity and mercy.

I need a car to get my daughter to appointments and labs, and at times the hospital ER, and ultimately to get her new kidney. (And then around after that.). Even if it’s a $600 beater that needs $2000 in repairs, as long as it can cross the mountain pass and get us around town.

Here is a link to our YouCaring as well. I’d appreciate If you’d read both, and boost/reblog if you can’t donate. If you can spare anything, it’s greatly appreciated. Literally every penny counts and helps.
https://www.youcaring.com/therenaissancefamily-1124930

I seem to make a new version of this post each month, as we are hit by need and new disasters. I’m sorry.

Here is the information for possible kidney donors: Donors need to between 21-45, in reasonably good health, and O+ blood type. If this is something you’re interested, please contact the University of Washington’s living donor program at 206-598-3627, and mention you’re interested in donating to Dessie McAdams. I am not sure what constitutes “reasonably good health” in this case, though I think most people with chronic illnesses don’t qualify and anyone immmuno-compromised. Best to contact UW and ask.

Adding this here, because the other is a bit lengthy: as of 4/11/18, I have a car now! It’s 20 years old but in remarkably good shape for its age. My mother was able and willing to help me get a vehicle, with a reasonable repayment plan of $100/month for a year.

Help and assistance is still needed (there are title transfer fees, and we’re usually struggling to get through the month, every month). But it’s no longer quite so dire.

Please keep this moving, as we approach a new month with probably (but hopefully not) new suffering and disasters. Be aware that YouCaring will be fully merged with GoFundMe by July 31st 2018, so if that’s your preferred donating platform, donate on it while you can!

Boozhoo (hello), my name is Ken, I am a disabled Ojibwe artist from northern Wisconsin. I am writing this post because I am having a hard time making ends meet and any donations I could possibly receive at this time would be greatly appreciated. Recent events have left my bank account depleted and my cupboards bare, I have some food but it will not last and I still do not know how I will cover all the utility bills.

I do have PayPal, that is really the best way to donate at this time, the email I use for that is: baapimakwa@gmail.com, or you can click here.
