do u ever feel like you’ve accidentally tricked certain people into thinking you are smarter and have more potential than you actually do and do you ever think about how disappointed they’ll be when you inevitably crash and burn

Fun fact: Impostor Syndrome is ridiculously common among high-achievers, particularly women. If you identify with this post, odds are pretty good that you’re exactly as smart as people think you are, and the failure you’re afraid of isn’t inevitable at all.

Even Maya Angelou stated, “I have written 11 books, but each time I think, ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.’”

and don’t forget this is one of the psychological barriers placed in by thousands years of patriarchy and male supremacy.

My computer science professor actually talked about this on the first day, it was really cool.

Fun brutal fact: in addition to the existence of imposter syndrome, being “twice exceptional” (also known as 2e) is also a thing. That means being intellectually gifted AND ALSO having a disability that affects your ability to succeed at study or work. Such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, etc etc etc. A lot of people believe that it’s not possible to be both, but it very much is.

Society tends to have very high expectations for how well gifted people will perform. Society tends to have low expectations for how well disabled people will perform. Society tends to attribute invisible disabilities, including mental illness, to a failure of willpower or effort or a bad attitude.

So if you read this post and went “no, but seriously, this is not just low self esteem on my part, people keep thinking I’m smart and then I keep crashing and burning and disappointing them and they can’t understand why I didn’t live up to their expectations, it happens again and again and when I tell someone how I feel and ask for help, they just tell me to stop being so hard on myself and that I’ll succeed if I have more self-confidence,” it is not just you.

(Also, one of the previous posts in this thread buried the lede a little. Imposter syndrome is ridiculously common in people from underrepresented groups in academia and other high pressure/high status fields, particularly women and people of colour. Maya Angelou did not only feel out of place because she was a woman.)

This essay also totally changed my view on the intersection of impostor syndrome and mental illness.

We just got a grocery delivery, and I had to work pretty hard not to bust out laughing or at least make faces.

More of one particular very British style of benevolent sexism. Pleasant enough older guy delivering–who kept warning me that things were heavy and acting concerned that a bag of lightweight cat litter or a bag with a couple of 2L drink bottles might be too much to handle! When I was bigger than the delivery guy again 😅

Wouldn’t have shown I was struggling even if it had been too much on the malfunctioning shoulder muscles (spoiler: nope). The totally non-obvious messed up muscles, I might add.

Though maybe my favorite instance ever happened years ago, when this cab driver absolutely insisted on carrying a 6-pack of canned cat food to the door for me 🤔 He was obviously trying to be nice, so I let him if he really wanted to, but seriously wtf.

Haven’t encountered that in a while, probably because Mr. C usually answers the door. His hefting larger orders into the hall usually does save some spoons, though totally thanks to musculoskeletal issues. Today he was still out on another shopping trip, though.

Similar has happened multiple times before. But, I am still surprised every time 🙄

So the idea of a universal Neolithic Mother Goddess is one of the few areas where misogynist scholars and New Age-y feminists find common ground, because misogynist scholars use it to claim a Primitive Matriarchal Stage of Human Development, and New Age-y feminists use it to claim a Halcyon Primeval Rule of Women, but their arguments rest on questionable interpretations of very limited archaeological evidence, i.e. lots of figurines/reliefs of corpulent women which we have like no social or religious context for.

And they like to cite finds from this one central Anatolian site with lots of plaster reliefs of Mother Goddesses, etc. But recently an artifact was discovered that actually has a head and turns out the plaster reliefs aren’t Mother Goddesses at all because the new complete find has paws and a snout and is clearly a bear.

It’s a bear. They’re bears. They’re all bears.

The assumption here is that the man is the only one on the mortgage and paying bills.

Men like that make me want to punch things.

Matt Walsh deserves his own tag here. Or maybe he has one and I’ve just forgotten it.

Hey, I wanna talk about that “man cave” thing.

How many women have private rooms to themselves in the average family house? Not the bedroom (shared), not the bathroom (shared) not the kitchen or living room (shared public spaces in the family)

What numbers of women have a private office set up just for them? A sewing / crafting room? A Lady-den where we can close the door and just play video games while our husband cleans and makes us lunch?

Where is it? Do we supposedly dominate the domestic space because we are charged with cleaning and decorating it? Then men must “escape” from the house that they do not take domestic responsibility for?

Because all I see is an extra privilege that men are now complaining about.

in 10 days ireland is having a referendum to hopefully repeal the 8th amendment, which equates the life of a foetus to that of an adult

abortion is currently 100% illegal in ireland with a penelty of up to 14yrs (rape is 7yrs, if even that) and up to 10 people travel to england to access abortion every single day

if you’re irish, remember go to vote Yes on May 25th. if you’re not irish but have irish friends, remind them to go vote Yes

(rb if ya can)

As the descendant of Irish immigrants, to my Irish followers, VOTE YES!

Boosting vote for the right to choose

Ornithologist Jerry McGahan is pictured with a 6 month old Andrean Condor, the largest flying bird on earth. Photographed by the Helen and Franck Schreider.

Another version of this photo made it to the cover of National Geographic.

They really aren’t, not sure why people always say that. Wandering and Royal Albatrosses have longer wingspan (though not as wide… condor wing surface area might be higher because of that?), and the Great Bustard and Kori Bustard are heavier. The Andean Condor is a very big bird, and among the largest extant flying birds, but not the actual record holder.
