a butch i’m friends with has told me what it was like for her in her youth and its so fucked! she went to college in the mid 70s, keep in mind too that it was a PUBLIC state college not even a religious one, and it was literally against the rules for women to not wear dresses. workplaces were universally the same (unless of course you passed). last time i was with her and another old butch they talked about how it was normal in lesbian culture to have half your friends immediately go to the bathroom and change when they went out to bars after work or school, like unquestioned thats just what all the butches and dykes did. you’d see em for a sec in day-drag and they’d come back out as themselves, unquestioned. anyways, in the 1990s my friend was working as a lawyer in the southwest and she literally could not enter the courtroom in pants or else the judge would tell her to leave and it would hurt her case too. like, i was alive then? it was not a long time ago? its fucking nuts that people think that women being able to dress practically is just like women getting away with shit when they fought tooth and nail and organized to be able to do it. and yknow what, today in 2018, women can wear jeans without question, but they sure as fuck can’t look like too ~manly~ and be left alone, i can attest to that, so uh, yeah, women keep breaking the rules for years and getting beat up and excluded and marginalized and humiliated and shamed until its normalized and then the second it is everyone with the memory of a goldfish is like “wow women can wear pants, privilege!”
We’ve been kicking around (hah) the idea of kickstarting enamel pins, specifically of our Pride Raised Fist & Pride Animals. It’s the most requested item that we don’t currently carry, but it definitely requires a Kickstarter to put that together.
But! Before I start putting together the Kickstarter, I’d like to get an idea from y’all: would an enamel pin of the raised Pride fist (with stretch goals to add flags) be something you’d be interested in? If you really super wanted a Pride Animal, which one would it be?
is it weird that as i got through the tweet my understanding of it lessens?
If you had a recent ancestor who went through starvation it actually altered their genetics and may have passed down genes to you that make you hold on to fat. So this tweet is more accurate than you’d think.
MY FUCKING GREAT GRANDFATHER LITERALLY FLED LEBANON DUE TO A FUCKING FAMINE AND MY GRANDMOTHER AND DAD AND I ARE ALL FAT AS FUCKING HELL.
FUCK ME RUNNING I DID NOT KNOW THIS.
…That’s going to apply also to anyone whose recent ancestors voluntarily dieted a lot, isn’t it. Diet culture long-term causes more obesity. Sure, it takes decades to show up, but anything you’d hear today about childhood obesity would reflect that. Exercising is still very good for most people, but trying to lose weight shouldn’t be the goal for most people, because a) it usually doesn’t work very well or it comes back and b) your kids or grandkids could end up with extra wonky metabolisms. (And while fat itself is actually not that much of a problem if you keep your fitness up, it can be hard on your joints. That’s actually the biggest health risk if you’re “small end of fat,” under 40, and active–joint problems.)
THAT MOTHERFUCKING ARTIFICIAL FAMINE THAT’S IT I’M GONNA FIGHT THE ENGLISH
Honestly, “I’m gonna fight the English” is a good reaction to a lot of things.
