I was ordered to “create a distraction” while my boss covertly prepared snacks for children. Having never heard that phrase used outside of action movies and cartoons, my instinct was to shout “Hey everybody, look at me!” and dance desperately, moonwalking, high-kicking, and wiggling around to draw attention away from the ice cream being unboxed.

So my cousin and his wife have just had a brand new baby, Cooper, and he is really sick. He’s been in the NICU having seizures almost constantly since he was born last week and he was only able to start breathing on his own today, he has club feet that need surgery and a chromosome disorder that they haven’t identified yet. They’ll get the results for the chromosome disorder in a couple weeks, and for now he has an IV going into his head with anti-seizure medication.

The thing is, my cousin and his wife had absolutely no warning that anything was wrong and they were flown off the island to the children’s hospital on the mainland and my cousin thinks he’s lost his job from having to miss work, and they’re really struggling to support themselves away from home and even at home they are going to need a lot of stuff to support their new special needs baby.

If you can donate even a few dollars to help them survive this nightmare and look after baby Cooper I would be eternally grateful (and so will they!) He has had a really rough start to life and if you can help make it a little easier it would mean the world to me.

So, I forgot to include this, but Cooper also has a cleft in his lower back. It’s not spina bifida because his spinal column did seal and he can move his legs a little bit, but they aren’t sure what exactly the ramifications of it are yet. 😦

Hello, I know you’re probably busy and flooded with asks. But I finally manage to get my hands on a velvet blazer (not the weather for it but I was thrifting so I wasn’t going to pass it up) and I was wondering what the proper way to take care of it, like washing and all that. Normally I give all thrifted items a good wash before even thinking of wearing them or hanging them up in my closet, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that velvet shouldn’t go in the washer like regular clothing.

You’ve got a couple of options:

  • A 1:10 mix of cheap vodka (cheap, unflavored, undrinkable vodka) and water in a spray bottle. Spray down the blazer, inside and out, and either toss it in the dryer for 30 minutes on low, or leave it outside in the sun for a few hours. (This is an old costumers’ trick, and is how I used to get club smoke out of my velvet dresses Back In The Day.)
  • Get a Dryel “home drycleaning” kit (you want the “starter” kit). Use the booster spray on any stained places, thoroughly soaking them. Then toss the blazer into the special dryer bag, put one of the Dryel sheets in the bag, and toss the whole thing into the dryer for 30 minutes on high. 

The one benefit the Dryel kit has over the the DIY vodka/water mixture is that the booster cleaning spray is AMAZING. So far, the only things I’ve not been able to remove from white fabric using it are chocolate and blood. (And OxyClean or similar works on those.) (Look, I occasionally have … issues with my gothic heroine nightgowns, okay?)

Everyone knows that you shouldn’t pick up a tortoise or turtle by their shell since their backbone is fused with it, but often it’s not really an easy thing to visualize how that works. Here’s a really cool image for that… 

Almost NOBODY knows this, because people don’t bother to simply show you a fucking image like this in school so before i saw this on tumblr i thought a turtle was simply a loose animal in a shell like a snail
