Posters from the fight against HIV/AIDS

Remember our history. Our discourse cannot be sound without it. This is our legacy.

i’m pretty sure i’ve reblogged this before, but i’m gonna go ahead and do it again because the late ‘80s / early ‘90s were fucking terrifying. queer rights was literally a life and death struggle.

I would just like to add that this isn’t just history. It’s still happening. HIV/AIDS is still a problem worldwide, and yes, that includes the US. Even with all of the medical advancements that have been made over the last 30 years, we’re a long way out from eradication.

In fact, here’s some news about how the Trump administration is affecting the ongoing fight against AIDS. It is not good.

Sure, this epidemic used to be worse. But it’s not over.

Oh my. Just got this email from Penzeys –

Now
through Sunday get the half-cup jar of your choice (up to a $9.95 value)
     free with any $5 purchase!

You
may have read last Thursday’s email from us. In it we
pointed out that Thursday was the second anniversary of our President,
while still just a candidate, rolling out his campaign with the quote:
"Likewise, tremendous infectious disease is pouring across the
border.“ We pointed out that no future historian of the 21st century
will be so unaware of the history of the 20th century to not know exactly
who he was channeling with those words, and how much inhumanity he was
willing to risk setting in motion to bring attention to his
     candidacy.

Long
ago we figured out cooking is kindness. Six years ago, while our home
state of Wisconsin was becoming the testing grounds for what is now being
inflicted upon our entire nation, we realized kindness can’t sit down
simply because anger has stood up. For me there’s so much more fun in
highlighting humanity than there is in challenging inhumanity. Still,
variety is the Spice of life. When we find the opportunity to have our
offers possibly make a difference, we will try to have our offers make
     that difference.

So
we sent our email in support of those facing the racism of this
Republican Presidency, and as expected some were not happy. Objecting
emails came my way, some were angry, more were actually pretty decent
(thanks). But something else also happened. While one third of one
percent of our email list opted out, two and a half times that many,
urged on by friends, signed up. And then the orders started coming, and
     coming, and coming.

By
the end of the day we had surpassed our previous biggest day by a good
chunk, and that previous biggest day, like all our previous biggest days,
had all the key pieces of a holiday season lined up just right to make it
the day if was. Last Thursday had none of that. I think a better
reference to how remarkable Thursday was comes when comparing it to July
of last year. On last Thursday, in just one day, more orders were placed
than in the first 17 days of July last year combined.

Sixteen
percent growth is both exciting and manageable. Sixteen hundred percent
growth creates some issues. While our amazing people work to grind, blend
and package the Spices needed to replenish inventory levels, we are
putting our previously planned promotions on a short delay. So today,
instead of us offering you something we think you might like to try, we
are giving you the chance to get what you already want, with any $5
purchase. To get what you want, bring this email or the coupon above to
any of our stores and spend $5. Or visit us online
     at penzeys.com
, and after spending $5, type in the five digit
number for the half-cup jar of your choice up to $9.95 followed by the
letter “C” in the apply code box while checking out. It’s easy.

And
thank you 1600% over. A business can try to do what’s right, but without
the support of its customers it can only go so far. What you did last
Thursday means so much. Not only do we get to keep on with what we are
doing and continue to grow, but with those kinds of numbers other
businesses will have to take notice as well.

So
much of the destruction that has happened here in Wisconsin, and has now
begun to take place on a national level, has nothing to do with the
values of Republican voters and everything to do with behind the scenes
unlimited corporate political spending. That money has hand-picked and
elected those Republican politicians willing to place loyalty to their
donors ahead of loyalty to their voters. With the sheer meanness of what
is now happening to education, housing, health insurance, justice, and
the environment, if you have a business, now’s the time to make your
in-front of the scenes promotional spending count. As last Thursday’s
email showed, the people of America are waiting out there to support you
     in a very big way.

Love
your country; it needs it right now,

Bill

The people who say there’s no point talking about Russia because the GOP will never cave or we’ll just get Pence anyway are wildly missing the point. First of all, a foreign nation meddled in our election, even if there was no collusion at all it’s still a huge deal. Second of all, if the crimes of a president can be brushed away because the opposition doesn’t see enough political rewards, then we don’t have a country. This matters. A lot. I know pundits have taught us that nothing matters if it doesn’t move polls but keeping us a democracy is intrinsically important.

was driving with my girlfriend and spotted a vulture with a broken wing standing on the side of the road. there was an animal hospital nearby with a wildlife unit so we pulled over and picked it up and drove it to tufts. i think its got a good chance at survival and it feels good to have been able to make the call and help an injured wild animal out

the funniest part of this was showing up at the Tufts emergency room with all these average folks with their dogs sitting politely on leashes in the waiting room and us being two very sweaty, disheveled haggy dykes who are bursting in and nearly running up to the desk holding a vulture in nothing but our bare hands and the look of extreme shock and horror on everybody’s face
