I learned in a Latin Studies class (with a chill white dude professor) that when the Europeans first saw Aztec cities they were stunned by the grid. The Aztecs had city planning and that there was no rational lay out to European cities at the time. No organization.
plus like… cities are not the be all and end all of society. pastoral and hunter gatherer societies are just different, not lesser.
I’ve noticed recently that your “like” heart shows up on every post in the chain, something which makes no sense on the case of disagreements where you might be liking some posts in a chain and not others.
Yep, if you reblog something, and someone else likes it, you get the notification, and know it’s from the version that you reblogged. The OP also gets a notification, and has no idea.
It’s kind of nerve-wracking when you post something, someone replies “fuck you, you’re wrong about everything,” and then 200 likes show up on the post.
tumblr: a series of poorly-thought-through design choices
I think Tumblr was once intended to be something more akin to Pinterest, where people would post lots of pastel-tinted images of seashells, and other people’s interaction with it would mostly consist of different ways of expressing “those are indeed some fine pastel-tinted images of seashells!”
Using it as a platform for intensive debate and discussion is kind of an off-label, secondary use, so the features aren’t built for that.
…I mean, by now they’ve had long enough to figure out how people are using their platform so there’s not much excuse, but that’s my attempt at explaining some of these interface decisions.
i feel like my reaction to The Discourse from now on will be “those are indeed some fine pastel-tinted images of seashells!”
A new study found that Black Americans are “far more likely” than white Americans to recognize the bias and discrimination that LGBTQ people face.
There were also differences along the lines of age, gender and political leanings, as well as differences when it comes to supporting marriage equality. All interesting stuff to know; read more over at Quartz.
