We at Tort-time support this anon’s request and remind everyone that sometimes you just need some turtle spam. Let’s make tumblr a better place with turtle spam (and tortoise spam)

And by that we also implied you should totally add a turtle or tortoise (Terrapins welcome!) How many shells can this post hold? Sorry we hijacked your post @wayward-mirage .. Its Zoya’s fault. She likes to show off her sunglasses gif.

Food is just food and doesn’t have a natural mealtime. This is especially important to remember when you’re dealing with mental illness that makes it hard to eat.

When I’m in a down swing with my depression, I forget to eat/don’t feel like eating. When I do get around to eating, often the only thing I want is something like pancakes, or milk, or apple sauce. And of course it’s 6pm and I feel lame for eating ‘breakfast’ foods. Or it’s 8am and I want fried chicken, and feel like a terrible person for eating dinner at 8 in the morning.

But food is just food. We assign certain foods to certain times of day culturally, but it’s not a biological thing. Your body can digest pizza at 9 in the morning and yogurt at 11pm. Are you eating food? Yes? Then great! It doesn’t matter what ‘kind’ of food you’re eating, as long as you’re nourishing that body of yours. It’s ok to have cheap ramen for breakfast if that’s all you can stand to eat. That’s ok–you ate food today!! That’s a major accomplishment when you’re dealing with an illness that tries to stop you from doing everyday person things. (Especially if you’re recovering from an eating disorder.)

Don’t feel bad if you eat rice for breakfast or muffins for dinner. Food is just food.

Food is just food.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about the “dangers of fiction influencing reality” with linked scientific findings and stuff and I appreciate the effort to back things up with psychological studies rather than, like, memes, but I’m just letting y’all know… that was literally the argument Tipper Gore used when she went after Prince music for fear it would turn her daughter into a stripper. That’s the exact argument that was used against Rockstar when they were accused of ‘making’ kids shoot up schools. These crusades against media have time and time again failed with their only positive results usually just being more prevalently available warnings for mature content. And their negative repurcussions have been far greater, such as an increased stigma against black music and parents banning their children from playing any video games. (Blocking people off from experiencing multiple genres based on racial bias and excluding access to an entire artform.) I’m not saying that there’s not stuff to be concerned about/critique. I’m just saying that if you’re going the “fiction is dangerous!” route it has historically been proven to be a lost cause.

Let’s not forget that gangsta rap was one of the things people like Tipper were after too.

I.e.: artistic expression by black men who were, sure, sometimes being vulgar for the hell of it (like white rockers weren’t?!) but who were also often talking about social issues and injustices too

You can’t kill the vulgarity without killing the important part too.

Your pesticide kills both.

You know what? I want to give a shoutout to a specific type of poor person we never hear about enough: the poor person who “isn’t poor enough.”

Shoutout to to the poor people who:

-Can’t afford to feed their families all the time but don’t qualify for food stamps

-Can’t afford college but don’t qualify for loans or discounts

-Can’t afford to pay rent but don’t qualify for low income housing

-Can’t afford hospitals or dentists but don’t qualify for most insurance policies for poor folk

-Who are always being told they aren’t “really poor” and “don’t have it that bad” because they don’t qualify for all of these things

-Who aren’t listened to because they’re experiences “don’t count” as a poor person’s experience.

-Who have nice things, proof they aren’t “really poor,” even though they aren’t that nice really and were either a gift or something they got at a garage sale or thrift store or whatever (meaning they didn’t pay much for it)

There’s more faces to being poor than people know, especially in the Western world. Poor people don’t all look like they’re starving and homeless and all of that. Sometimes poor people don’t look that poor at all to an outsider.

And those poor people need to be heard too. Those poor people need to be helped and protected too.

Because any kind of poor isn’t ok. No one should ever have to be poor in such a rich society, even if it’s only barely.

I feel really bad that so many people related to this post but I’m glad so many are standing up and saying that they will be there for anyone who related to this.

Thank you, you wonderful person.

You’re welcome. Believe me, you’re not alone.
