Winston Jones was admitted to hospital with a brain aneurysm in 2014, which he attributes to the stress he was under as he tried to sort out his passport problems.

The 62-year-old spent five months in hospital, where staff told the former British Rail worker that he might need to pay for his treatment, even though he had paid UK taxes for more than 40 years.

“They showed me a bill for the brain operation. I think it was £5,000,” he said.

Upon discharge, he had nowhere to go because he had lost his home as a result of official doubts about his right to be in the UK. Hospital staff had been unable to find him a bed in a homeless shelter; having been classed as an “illegal immigrant” he was ineligible for a bed in a state-funded hostel. Despite his precarious health and lack of accommodation, he was allowed to leave the hospital and began sleeping rough. He had no warm clothes and few belongings because when was he evicted all his things had been thrown away.

“I wasn’t at all well. It was January or February; I was freezing that night. It was so cold I thought I was going to die,” he said.

this is a direct consequence of theresa may’s hostile environment and it’s not an isolated case. theresa may is a ruthless and calculated racist and needs to go, along with the rest of her party.

for all the Tories desperate attempts at rebranding themselves trying to portray themselves as a modern socially progressive party “look, we even have gay Tory MPs!” it just reminds me of the fact that you can put a diamond necklace on a lump of shit, but it’s still a lump of shit.

tfw completely despondent about the state of the world and unable to even read the news/desperate to do something to put good back into the world but unable to pull yourself far enough out of your surreal depression fog to even properly go buy groceries or hang out with your friends or text anyone back

I understand feeling this way, been there myself. It’s ok. Be kind to yourself, give yourself time. Survive. Focus on your own recovery and on the things you can influence and make better, or keep from getting worse, focus on having good relationships with the people around you. If surviving is all the good you can give the world right now, please know that it is enough! It is a lot, in fact!

If/when you feel you can do more than survive, you will do that. You don’t have to read the news if it only depresses you or makes you feel guilty for not stopping the horribleness. In fact, you should consider taking a break from reading news or exposing yourself to horrible things. If you do read (/watch/listen to) them, take breaks and don’t do it in the hour or two before you sleep. Do/read/watch something positive or hopeful or at least neutral in that time or distract yourself. It doesn’t mean you don’t care. It means you care enough to take care of your ability to care.

I just got one of those door-to-door evangelists, and I’ve gotta admit I kind of feel sorry for them – their pitch is, like, hilariously ineffective because they just don’t seem to realise that most folks have no point of reference on what they’re selling. It’s like watching someone try to convince people that they should play Pokémon, except they’re operating under the unexamined assumption that everyone everywhere is already familiar with the basics and just can’t decide which generation is best, so they’re standing there banging on about the finer points of the type matchup grid to an audience whose knowledge of and interest in the franchise begins and ends with “the monster goes in the ball”.

I once completely stumped an evangelist when I was a kid because he asked me if I knew who Jesus was, and I said ‘no’.

“No?” the poor dude repeated, looking dubiously at his companion.

Me being myself, I immediately doubled-down.

“No,” I repeated. “Who’s Jesus?”

This summoned up a long silence, followed by the evangelists asking to speak to my mother or father.

“They’re not here,” I said. Technically also a lie, but my father was sleeping from working nights, and I wasn’t going to wake him up for this.

“Well… um… so Jesus… Jesus Christ? Our Lord and Saviour, Who is the Son of God?” the chatty evangelist tried, looking at me like I was some kind of alien puzzle.

“You mean Hercules?” I responded, for some reason. I still don’t know why.

Another long silence. We were clearly off-script. The chatty evangelist started trying to go through the ‘died for your sins’ spiel, and for some reason, all I could think to do was roll with the angle that I was legitimately unfamiliar with even the concept of Jesus, and had somehow reached the age of nine or ten with only a thorough education on Greek Mythology to serve me in a religious context.

I think the second guy was well aware that I was full of shit, because he kept covering his mouth like he was going to laugh, but the first guy was just caught somewhere between horror and a weird kind of excitement. Like he’d been waiting to finally meet someone who didn’t know ANYTHING about Jesus, just so he could be the first to explain the whole Christianity deal.

Anyways long story short I ended up just trying to tell them all about the Trials of Hercules, like we were just exchanging fun facts we knew about demigods, while the first guy was just adamantly trying to be like ‘no that stuff is made up, but the Jesus stuff is true’, until his friend finally was just like ‘thank you have a good day’ and closed the door and made him leave.

There’s a lot of things thin people can do to advocate for the thin people they love–

Ask for armless chairs

Offer to go as an advocate with them to the doctor

Don’t go shopping with them in places they can’t shop too

Don’t use the words “obese” or “overweight”

Educate other thin people

So I’ve started listening to the podcast She’s All Fat and I just got to am episode geared toward this exact topic. They got to a listener question about what a thin(ner) friend could do to be a better friend and ally and the topic of malls came up. One of the hosts mentioned not going to just thin stores and then had a revelation

‘Go with your fat friend to her store. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fat girl in Lane Bryant walking around with her thin friend. Ever.’

And I realized, neither have I. I’ve never gone with my thin friends to a fat store, not once. Can you imagine???

I’ll take you shopping in LA girl just watch.

Shouldn’t the OP say “for the FAT people they love”?

Well, I guess you got me. Good job.

I love this campaign. All members of the LGBT community deserve to feel safe and that includes senior citizens

The last image.. hits me very hard. I ‘grew up’ as a gay man in an age when our ‘elders’ began going extinct at an alarming rate. It’s something you cannot explain to someone who didn’t survive it. Try to imagine, for a moment, a world without “Daddies”. It almost came to pass. We are few and far between but we survived and endured losses you can’t comprehend. Friends, loved ones, family.. every day our icons and heroes fell. It was devastating because we nearly lost everything: history, community, connection and the ‘old guard’. Some ‘resent’ the presence but they should be treasured.

The need for love, companionship, compassion and community never changes. Respect and cherish each other.
