“On her first day on the job, Gertrude Jeannette, believed to be the first woman to drive a cab in New York City, got in an accident — on purpose. She had pulled up in front of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in Manhattan looking for a fare but was cut off by other taxi drivers. “In those days they didn’t allow black drivers to work downtown; you had to work uptown,” Ms. Jeannette, who was African-American, later recalled. “They said, ‘Say, buddy, you know you’re not supposed to be on this line.’” As cabbies hurled insults and hemmed her in, she remained calmly on the line — until, that is, a Checker cab lurched in front of her. “I rammed my fender under his fender, swung it over to the right and ripped it,” she said in 2011 at a ceremony in her honor at the Dwyer Cultural Center in Harlem. When the other driver got a good look at her, she recalled, he screamed: “A woman driver! A woman driver!” She was later reprimanded by an inspector, but she drove off with her very first customer. Ms. Jeannette, who was also one of the first women to get a motorcycle license in New York, and who later overcame a speech impediment to become a Broadway, film and television actor as well as a playwright, producer and director, died on April 4 at her home in Harlem. She was 103. Ms. Jeannette got her hack license in 1942. She had responded to an ad in a newspaper looking for women to replace the male cabdrivers who had been drafted into World War II. “Women were going into plants and everything else, taking over jobs,” she recalled in a 2005 interview. “I said, well, I know one thing — I can drive a car.” “Thirty-two of us took the test and only two of us passed,” said Ms. Jeannette, who learned how to drive a Chrysler truck at the age of 13 in Arkansas. “But the other girl didn’t get her license because she had citations on her driver’s license. And so I, I was the first….” VIA JONATHAN WOLFE/ @nytimes #theunsungheroines
why does nobody ever talk about how the belief of “romance is the top priority” is so toxic and dangerous? how it causes more harm than good?
this doesn’t even just affect aromantic people. this belief harms anyone and everyone.
there are people that literally believe their life has no point because they don’t have a significant other. there’s mentally ill/neurodivergent people that think they’re worthless and meaningless and disgusting because they can’t find someone who wants to date them, even if they’re showered with love from their friends and/or family. but the love only counts if it’s romantic, right?
society is constantly perpetuating the idea that you were born to find a romantic partner and that romance is the only way to be truly happy, and it’s so messed up. this completely disregards other great moments in life, like personal achievements that make you feel like you’re on top of the world and the things nobody glorifies simply because it’s not romance.
your pet(s) pulling a smile out of you every time you see them. having a deep, emotional talk with a friend and being reminded that someone cares about you. enjoying alone time with yourself. reaching a milestone or getting through a hard time. these things are so wonderful and amazing, but it’s not romance, so it doesn’t matter, right? it’s boring and insignificant.
and it really shows when questions like “do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?” and “have you settled down with someone yet?” are asked. it shows how society thinks romance is the most important thing to experience in life. the “yet” implies that romance is a requirement, that you’ll have to find it eventually. but what if you don’t want to? if you simply aren’t interested in that stuff right now or if you won’t ever be interested?
romance is not everything. remember that. you were not born to “find someone” or to “have a soulmate”. you don’t need romance in your life for it to be a good one. you are allowed to not include it in your priorities. it doesn’t matter if nobody has a crush on you or wants to date you. it literally doesn’t matter. that has absolutely no importance to your worth as a human being. you were not brought into this world to impress and find a potential mate. you’re here to live and to do what makes you happy.
romance can be nice, but it is not everything. please, please remember that.
This “romance above all else” mentality is why my best friend sometimes thinks about suicide. He’s been conditioned to believe that he’s literally worthless if he doesn’t have a romantic partner. He’ll go on and on about how he’s so alone and no one loves him, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Because he doesn’t have a girlfriend. Because he’s almost 30 and has been divorced and hasn’t remarried. Because none of the love he experiences is romantic.
And there’s nothing I can do or say to convince him otherwise because the world itself is conspiring against me by emphasizing romance above all else. And it’s fucking bullshit.
This is actually what you should say to an ICE agent who has come to your house looking for an undocumented immigrant.
Specifically, do not open the door; tell them to slide their warrant under the door. Read it carefully and check to see if it’s a JUDICIAL warrant, which will have specific information like the time and location where they’re allowed to search, and a specific description of who or what they’re allowed to search for. ICE practically *never* have this; they’ll have an ADMINISTRATIVE warrant, which is just their orders from their boss telling them to arrest a particular person. It does not give them the right to enter your house.
ICE *can* enter your house if they have probable cause, such as if they see the person they’re looking for through a window or door (which is why you don’t open the door). Other forms of probable cause include kids telling agents that they were born outside of the US. Agents will trick people into chatting with them, especially kids who serve as translators for their parents, asking things like “What part of Mexico are you from?” Staying silent keeps the onus on them to prove in court later that they had evidence someone isn’t here legally.
It’s important to remember that for now, at least, every person ICE wants to deport has to go before a judge, and ICE has to provide evidence that they know this person is undocumented and that they were arrested without violating the 4th amendment (against unreasonable search and seizure). We know that cops lie and that judges usually side with them, but agents would rather go for a sure bet from a targeted raid than risk wasting their time and energy on arrests that could be thrown out. Knowing your rights and being prepared makes you a more difficult target.
“I do not consent to entry without a warrant.”

ACTUALLY, ICE will wave around anything and call it a warrant and unless you’re a lawyer chances are you won’t be able to tell, so call a lawyer. ICE often comes in civilian vehicles and clothes, will often conceal their badges from you and will even lie about who they are, and they’ve been known to work with police. You shouldn’t open the door. Call your lawyer, a volunteer lawyer group that assists immigrants or a response network* first. Never say anything that might reveal you’re an immigrant at all to any cop, not even if you are arrested for something else. Call your lawyer and let them deal with it.
Here is what a Judicial warrant looks like:
Asi es como se ve un warrant judicial:
This what an immigration warrant looks like:
Asi se ve un warrant de immigracion:
If the warrant looks like this, you don’t have to let them in. Either way, call your lawyer and if you see ICE or suspect you see them, call someone who responds to ICE raids.
Si el warrant se ve como este, usted no tiene que dejarlos entrar. En qualquier caso, llame a su abogado y si ve a ICE o sospecha que los ve llame a alguen que responda a raids de ICE.
*Response networks. Research online if there’s a network of people in your area who respond to ICE raids, you can also ask at local temples or churches if they know of one. These are people whom you call on the phone, they give you brief instructions and send respondents to your location to assist you, serve as witnesses and document what happens so you can use that information to your defense.
you ever feel like absolute garbage and then take a nap or just have a snack or something and feel 20 times better and then just be sitting there like a dumAss like wow, you Really Do Need to Eat and Sleep to Survive……..Wild
