Hi! What treatment do vets usually prescribe when an APH has mites?

Hey! 🙂

So there are two usual treatments for mites with hedgehogs – Ivermectin and Revolution. Always ask for Revolution.

Ivermectin is given in three ways – topical, oral, and injected. Of these, injected seems to be the most dangerous, but personally I would avoid any. There have been cases of hedgehogs dying or becoming ill after Ivermectin injections (in the first day or two after). Symptoms before death include slow paralysis – Ivermectin works by paralyzing mites.

Ivermectin is often used for a lot of other small mammals, including European hedgehogs. But for some reason, APHs seem to be sensitive to it, or maybe it’s just from slight errors that result in overdoses? We don’t really know, and I don’t think there are any studies on it yet. Some people have had vets brush them off or disbelieve that there have been any issues with it because they figure it’s just “internet horror stories”.

But between the two, the side-effect risks from Revolution are far less dangerous (I’ve seen dry skin & itching mentioned, and I think that’s it). It’s much harder to overdose enough to pose a hazard. So it just makes more sense to use it instead. Personally I would find a different vet if one refused to use Revolution instead of Ivermectin, but luckily I haven’t had one outright refuse before.

APH could very well have some hypersensitivity towards Ivermectin, just like certain dog breeds do. A genetic anomaly allows the medicine to access the central nervous system. The symptoms in these dogs are the same as those seen in hedgehogs. So far there seem to be no issues with Ivermectin treatment in European hedgehogs.

Revolution (called Stronghold outside of the US) is definitely the safest option. Sometimes Ivermectin is still used topically, when Stronghold isn’t working well enough, but it should always be a last resort and very carefully applied by an experienced vet.

Easy, and it should be really good if you like miso flavor.

I’ve been eating a lot of cucumber salads with this heat, but hadn’t gotten around to any with a miso dressing yet 😅

This batch I’m putting together with some celery instead of the asparagus, besides the cucumber and carrot sticks. I imagine green beans blanched for a few minutes would probably be great too, but we don’t have any of those either right now.

This is my first time trying this specific marinade, but similar has been extra good before with a sprinkle of shichimi pepper before serving.

Getting impatient waiting for the veggies to finish marinating in the fridge.

Also reminded by that tomato envy pic, I was also kind of impressed at how familiar a number of French heirloom seed varieties that get pushed here look. Especially with things like tomatoes and squashes.

And no wonder. Those were most likely taken back to France from a bit further up the East Coast. Slightly different varieties, but part of the same complex.

I mean, that wasn’t exactly hard to figure out. But it was still an interesting demonstration.

(And at least I haven’t seen anything claiming that the French brought tomatoes, unlike with the “Tennessee Cheese” type peppers. Ancient Spanish heirloom! 🤔 Not the only vegetable I have seen that claimed about, but one that popped into mind. And it’s not just that seed vendor.

My Nana always grew a similar “cheese” variety. Here’s another one. Those conquistadors must have been busy spreading vegetables around central Appalachia…)

Kind of a shame that I just didn’t have the spoons to try growing more decent tomatoes this year.

I also got kind of fed up with the results in this climate, especially with the big ugly Real Tomato™ heirloom varieties I tried. Even starting them out under cover, they kept taking forever to ripen–and too often with a taste and texture like they’d been grown in a refrigerator. I’m stubborn enough that I kept trying different things for like 10 years anyway.

Something tells me that they’d do much better in the wacky weather this year, though. Sustained heatwave here is feeling a lot like normal summer back home. (Minus anything being set up to cope with it less miserably.) It hasn’t even been getting colder at night than they like! 😮

catopumas are so interesting 2 me bc theres only two species so far in the genus, and its either

a very gentle looking asian golden cat

very kind looking, round. 10/10

and then the other in the genus is

the bay cat, or as i like to call them – the weasel cat. long, kinda weird looking, but still 10/10 despite the weaselness.
