writing conclusions in papers is like the stupidest thing ever though like what’s the point of dedicating an entire paragraph to “so yeah i know you just read my paper but this is a summarization of what you read in case you need to be reminded about what you just read” like why can’t the paper just end
I keep seeing this post and similar ones, and if y’all’s teachers and professors have left you with the idea that a conclusion is a summary, they have failed you in a big way.
Your conclusion is your “so what’s the fucking point” section. You’ve given you’re reader a lot of info and now they need to know why they care. Depending on the type of paper you should be giving a plan of action, explaining how this knowledge changes our understanding of the topic, link your paper to other disciplines, suggest further areas of study, etc.
One of the best pieces of writing advice I’ve ever received is that if you can’t envision yourself dropping the mic and strutting off stage at the end of your conclusion then it’s probably not strong enough.

“Jingle-Jangle” is actually a technical term is social science research that describes the challenge of measuring/describing/agreeing on important sociological concepts because either people are using different words to describe the same experience (jingle) and/or they are using the same words to describe very different experiences (jangle).
(it also could be the reverse. I’m not looking it up to double check)
In my work we keep getting caught in the jingle-jangle jungle around the term “empathy”. Really. I swear. I’m not just beating you over the head with the lessons of this cryptic parable. I really did have to spend 2 hours this week debating the difference between “empathy” and “listening”. Oh, you think that’s obvious but IT IS NOT!
Anyway, it’s a real term for a real thing that happens all the fucking time and if you don’t notice it happening you will find yourself arguing with people you don’t actually disagree with.
“Ok I’m gonna say it… I’m a radical I believe that deaf children deserve a family who can sign in an official language. I believe that all children deserve ASL AS THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE. I believe parents who deprive their deaf child of ASL are actively neglecting their child.”
23 Nuns Fight For the Survival of an Endangered Mexican Salamander
This is the Lake Pátzcuaro salamander. It is a critically endangered
species. Overhunting, habitat destruction, and invasive exotic fish have
brought the salamander to the brink of extinction. Recent studies
revealed that fewer than 100 are left in the wild.
But a group of 23
nuns in Mexico teamed up with other International experts to try and
save the species. The nuns live in a convent nearby and have used the
salamanders to make cough syrup for more than 150 years. Now they’re
breeding them not only to keep their tradition alive, but also to save
the amphibians from extinction.
Lake Pátzcuaro in Mexico is the only
place in the world these salamanders can be found. Experts say the nuns
will play a pivotal role in the survival of the species.

I totally am, but also: I have a story. The time: 1995. The place: a small liberal arts college. We decided to participate in “denim day” which was a widespread event wherein on National Coming Out Day, you would wear denim to indicate SUPPORT FOR the LGBT community. Our support group made posters that were very, very clear about this. Wearing denim did not mean that you were coming out, it meant you supported anyone around you who might.
I have never seen so many suits and khakis IN MY LIFE. People who accidentally wore jeans went home and changed.
The community took it as a rebuke. We drew in closer to eachother, and felt unwelcome everywhere we thought we had friends before.
And I had people later tell me “You know I support you, just… I didn’t want anyone to think I was.” First off, I DON’T know you support me. Not if you refuse to, for one day, change nothing about your life to show it. Second off… why is that such a terrifying thought to you?
I remember before rainbows were a “gay thing”. They were everywhere. Church walls next to arks. School walls next to sunshine faces. People have VOLUNTARILY abandoned every other use. I have HEARD PEOPLE SAY they just couldn’t use rainbows anymore because people would think of “gay stuff.”
So I know this is a joke, and a stolen one at that, but you’ve done this to yourselves. If someone is so terrified of being perceived as queer that they will INSTANTLY abandon something they like if it has queer germs on it now or something, then they don’t deserve refracted light.
Maybe help us change the world into a place where being mistaken for queer would be just a thing to chuckle about and you can have refracted light back.
