Hey so I just learned about something that my vet never told me about giving my cat her pill so I wanna share so other people can learn
Apparently dry pilling-giving your cat a pill by itself without anything with it- is bad
Info:
Dry pilling can lead to pills getting stuck in your cat’s esophagus (the tube leading from the mouth to the stomach). While dry pills are likely to get stuck, capsules are even more dangerous for cats. The smooth, gelatinous surface tends to cause capsules to lodge in the esophagus. Source
A 2001 study presented in a veterinary journal stated that “After 5 minutes 84% of capsules and 64% of tablets are still sitting in the esophagus.” The study also brought out the specter of esophagitis, which can be caused by the irritation of pills and capsules remaining in the esophagus for long periods of time. How to avoid these problems? Give your cat water, broth, food, or treats right after you pill them.
Offering food, tuna juice, milk, meat baby food, or a meat broth for them to lap up on their own results in less stress for the patient but many animals are not keen on eating or drinking right after a human as ‘pilled’ them. Source
So yeah. I just wanted to share because my cat has been on a daily pill for several months now and my vet never warned me. She gets a treat right after her medication to form good associations so while my cat is fine I feel like it’s good information to know.
Have I mentioned recently that I hate the way social media can trick you into taking a side in an argument you’re not even aware of, as a result of you seeing something that appears relatively innocuous and retweeting/reblogging it? Because… yeah. I do.
Bonus points if the side you’ve inadvertently taken is the side that you personally find noxious.
“you all are great people, and what you’re doing is art, but it’s also a crime punishable by 28 days in prison” is a real sentence that got said to me tonight by a security officer i think i’m living my best life
this is what was happening if anyone was wondering
