Upon first glance, one could easily mistake the Amphiuma for a kind of eel, but it is in fact an enormous aquatic salamander. Closer inspection will reveal 4 tiny limbs, with 1-3 little toes (dependent on the species). Of the 3 species, the Three-toed is the largest, attaining a length up up to 41 inches (104.14 cm).
These highly carnivorous amphibians feed on a wide variety of small aquatic creatures, and can deliver a rather painful and bloody bite with a pair or sharp oral bone ridges. Amphiuma mothers stay with their eggs in a muddy underwater nest. Unlike other salamanders, they are known to make a squeaky bark like noise, when disturbed.
All 3 species (Three-toed, Two-toed, and One-toed) are exclusive still and slow moving bodies of fresh water in the Southeastern United States. They retain their gills, in a pair of small gill chambers, into adulthood (allowing them to breathe with both gills and a very rudimentary set of lungs).
I don’t know why, but I think some Americans don’t realise how big the UK is….
American Customer: you’re English right? Do you know the bookshop between Wales and Bristol that has lots of books in?
Me in my head: yeah mate, I know that one. Classic. Love to pop down there on a cheeky break between work. What a wanker…
the continuous 48 states are is almost 39x the size of the isle of great britan
that’s your answer
For reference:
That’s JUST Texas.
Fucking hell
But how many bookstores do you know the location of in your state, just for reference? Because my guess is it’s still too big to know even a quarter of them, which I think op’s post was about.
“While Republican lawmakers have attempted to push through a vote on Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination amid multiple sexual assault allegations against him, none of the party’s members have signed on to support a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which expires at the end of September.
“none of the [Republicon] party’s members have signed on to support a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act”
“Democratic legislators have joined women’s rights and anti-domestic violence groups in calling for the law to be fully reauthorized and strengthened with proposals put forth in a version sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas).
…"Jackson Lee’s bill includes a provision to make it easier for police to confiscate guns from domestic abusers, more funding for rape prevention programs, and eviction protections for victims living in public housing.
…"As of Tuesday, 163 Democratic members of the House and zero Republicans had signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.”
my philosophy is “nothing an individual can do could possibly be worse for the environment than major corporations dumping tons of pollutants into the atmosphere every day but also don’t just toss shit on the ground you idiot have some manners”
You haven’t really fully lived in the midwest until you’ve experienced the chaos and odd comfort of playing in a pit filled with an incomprehensible amount of corn
This isn’t some faux-gothic shitpost I’m being 100% serious corn pools are the best
They’re the best and 100% real and 100% not a plot for the corn to consume your children
Do you ever think about the fact that the US has created and legitimized a system of institutionalized inequality by funding schools through property taxes? That basically a child’s education is only as good as the value of the property in their neighborhood. Funny how education is so often viewed as an equalizing factor when there is nothing equal about it.
I really don’t care if I’ve already reblogged this
Because this needs to be reblogged….
I remember learning this for the first time as an adult. I had grown up thinking education was the great playing field leveler. So I was so furious to find out how very much it wasn’t anything of the kind.
This is a big part of why you’ll often see rich white people fussing about school district lines, because they hate the idea that their money is going towards the education of poor children.
