The native Maori people of New Zealand have tattooed their faces for centuries. They had a complex warrior culture before the arrival of Europeans, and suffered under early colonialism, but have experienced a cultural revival since the 60′s.

The marks are called moko, and are etched with chisels instead of needles to leave grooves along with the ink. The true form is sacred, unique to each person, and distinct from European tattoos that mimic that traditional style.

There arent many pictures non combat related that look this badass

Actually most
Tā moko are done with modern tattoo equipment these days, but some people get them done the traditional way. And, as others have said, they’re not for Non-
Māori, as they have specific meanings and significance. If you want a tattoo with Māori

style, you can get a
kirituhi. These avoid any designs associated with particular tribes or famous people you’re not related to.

Kirituhi is a Māori style tattoo either made by a non-Māori tattooer, or made for a non-Māori wearer. Kirituhi has mana of it’s own and is a design telling the unique story of the wearer in the visual language of Māori art and design. Kiri means ‘skin’, and tuhi means ‘to write, draw, record, adorn or decorate with painting’.

Kirituhi is not restricted to only Māori people, and it is a way for Māori to share our cultural arts with people from around the world in a respectful manner, and for non-Māori artists to enjoy our beautiful art form as well. I happily do kirituhi for my clients around the world and it is a privilege to do such work for them.

Kirituhi is no lesser an artform than moko, however it is different and I believe these differences must be acknowledged and respected, so that the integrity of our taonga Māori – moko, is maintained around the world.

Moko is uniquely Māori and it is strictly reserved to be done by Māori, for Māori.

If either the recipient or tattooer do not have Māori whakapapa, then the resulting design is a Māori Style tattoo or kirituhi, NOT moko. The word moko originated from the Māori atua (god) of volcanic activity and earthquakes, Rūaumoko – therefore the origin of tā moko is divine and sacred – to me this is no small thing, nor should it be dismissed.

As my mentor once told me, ‘moko is about 99% culture, and 1% tattoo’.

Half the Picture: A Feminist Look at the Collection is organized by themes that relate to urgent conversations happening today. One theme, No Surprise, is inspired in part by the #MeToo movement. It includes Sue Coe’s depiction of Anita Hill being burned at the stake (a reference to witch hunts) while the all-male, all-white Senate Judiciary Committee and press corps look on.

During Clarence Thomas’s 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment. Broadcast live to the nation, the hearings became a national scandal, with Thomas denying all allegations and eventually being confirmed, a position he’s held since 1991. The accusatory and disbelieving tone of both the committee and the media effectively put Hill, not Thomas, on trial.

Nearly 30 years later, have things changed?

America, I know it’s a lot to ask, but I need you to promise me that the October Surprise isn’t going to be Trump’s penis.

because seriously if I see the word ‘wrinkled’ on CNN I’m coming over there to burn your whole country to the ground.

let alone having to read about Fox News panels optimistically discussing how the girth rumours might affect his chances with female voters.

seriously it’s just three weeks, you can handle a peaceful transfer of power without dragging Trump’s dick into the mix.

well, we made it two years, and here we are.

I know it must be tempting to disable all critical thinking and buy into a bunch of incoherent bullshit that seeks to explain the problems of the world by blaming ethnic minorities and encouraging their murder, but if a politician tells you to vote for him so he can protect you from Scary Foreign Man just consider for a second that you’re being played.

Did you know in Canada, PowWows and traditional dancing was ILLEGAL until 1952? In the US it was illegal until the 30′s, but not a protected right until 1978.

“In 1885, Canada’s Indian Act outlawed the potlatch, an exchange of wealth practiced by the Aboriginal nations of the Northwest Coast. An 1895 amendment to the Act widened its scope to include “any Indian festival, dance, or other ceremony.” […] any occasion featuring dance regalia made out of feathers or furs.
Similarly, in 1883, the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a circular entitled “The Code of Religious Offenses,” which declared Aboriginal ceremonies punishable by imprisonment.

A Department of Indian Affairs circular dated December 15, 1921, and endorsed by Duncan Campbell Scott — the top official who declared his intention “to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada” — states that the Indian agents who represented the department at the local level were to “use [their] utmost endeavours to dissuade the Indians from excessive indulgence in the practice of dancing.” Mr. Scott was of the opinion that dancing was a “waste of time” that encouraged “sloth and idleness.” Such “demoralizing amusements” were an “obstacle to continued progress.”

To discourage the sun dance, Indian Affairs employed the services of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and devised a pass system wherein any Aboriginal person absent from his or her reserve without permission of the Indian Agent could be arrested as hostile. This was a treaty violation and amounted to forcible imprisonment. But Aboriginal peoples are creative subversives: we modified our customs to make them harder to detect, and we gathered on European holidays to celebrate our traditions. Still, a number of people were charged with violating the anti-dancing laws, and most went to jail.

In one infamous case, a blind 90-year-old man in Fishing Lakes, Saskatchewan, was convicted of dancing and sentenced to two months hard labour – until public outcry forced authorities to suspend his sentence. In 1922, during a series of potlatch prosecutions, those convicted were told they could avoid prison terms if their fellow villagers surrendered all ceremonial masks, rattles, and jewelry. The villagers complied, and many of these objects were sold to the Royal Ontario Museum, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and private collectors. Still other items were simply piled up and burned on the beach.“

The psychological damage and cultural trauma was so great that it wasn’t until the 60′s and 70′s that pow wow’s experienced a revival in US & Canada. Generations of families under strict assimilation made people fearful and ashamed of expressing their culture and language, or unable to due to lost family traditions.

Think about that stain on the pages of history next time someone flippantly calls a group meeting a “pow wow”.

Me at the dog supply store trying to explain to the cashier why I don’t want to sign up for a rewards card like “I don’t actually have dogs”

And she’s like “oh we have lots of cat stuff too”

I mean uh. Well. I am here buying cat toys… for my cockatiel and my goldfish.

*nervous laughter* “ok yeah you don’t need to get a card”

My aide bought dog toys for her granddaughter: they’re durable, mouth-safe, soft and cute (and are more aesthetically pleasing than most toys actually made for human babies)

okay but if someone doesn’t experience homophobia or transphobia then they’re not lgbt it’s as simple as that…. the lgbt community doesn’t exist for the purpose of being “inclusive” it literally is by nature exclusive to people who experience homophobia and/or transphobia

No, I’m sorry, that’s simply not true. I’ve written an awful lot about this, which you can find under my ‘ace exclusion’ tag. But since there’s a lot under there, let’s hit all the highlights. Frankly, it’ll be nice to have an omnibus post I can just pass to people from now on.

This post is not an argument of your point, it is a reference post, because you are simply wrong.

This post is going to be very, very long, and very, very US-centric. It is important to state right up front that this discussion is extremely Western-centric. I do not have the right personally to speak on gender and sexual orientations from indigenous communities of which I am not a member, but it is absolutely important to acknowledge that the colonization of gender and sexual identity of non-Western peoples is a) wrong as fuck and b) we need to knock it off and c) none of the stuff I’m writing necessarily applies to non-Western peoples/indigenous peoples.

1) This ‘formed to fight homophobia and transphobia’ definition of LGBT is literally and completely an invention of Tumblr. It started on Tumblr, it really only exists on Tumblr, and it only exists for the sole purpose of excluding minority sexualities and orientations (not limited to but currently focused on asexuality). It’s a very recent invention and this specific definition is less than eighteen months old. Probably less than a year old, but I’ll be honest: I don’t have the time or patience to go through the history on Tumblr and read all the hateful stuff that I’d have to in order to find the first use of that particular little piece of nonsense.

I’m gonna keep on reblogging things like this until the faux-historical “But this is why the community was created!” misinformation stops being disseminated.

Reblogging for my own reference later.

British, too. The level of hostility really is bizarre.
