This is America.

There’s some nasty misogyny in the way this story is framed, and ESPECIALLY in the fact that the girls are the face of the article.

The team didn’t choose anything. The college, College of the Ozarks, made the decision and its President issued a particularly nasty statement accusing Nike of being ashamed of America. The girls were the first team to have to ditch their Nike uniforms and played in grey t-shirts because there was no time to order new uniforms.

Sure they could have protested and refused to ditch the uniforms, but they’re in no way the cause of this incident.

This would also be the same private religious institution which decided to roll out mandatory classes in “Patriotic Education and Fitness” last year in response to the protests.

After administration instituted ’its “No pledge, No Play” policy, which states the school’s athletic teams would not compete against other teams whose players or coaches do not stand during the playing of the national anthem.’ Not limiting the control to their own players.

This latest little tantrum definitely seems more appropriately credited to the administration. Even without the specific history, but it sounds like they just keep pulling stunts of that caliber around this issue.

“We are so lucky to have a human like Terry. Terry just came along one day and introduced himself. He said he’d like to brush cats. Eventually it became everyday. He brushes all of the cats, and can tell you about all of their likes and dislikes. He also accidentally falls asleep most days. We don’t mind – Cats need this! Terry is a wonderful volunteer.”

Duke University Study: N.C. Residents Living Near Large Hog Farms Have Elevated Disease, Death Risks

rjzimmerman:

Timely release of this research report, because hog poop lagoons in North Carolina are overflowing or structurally deficient during the current post-Hurricane Florence flooding.

Elevated risk of deaths, hospital admissions and emergency room visits from health problems such as anemia, kidney disease, and sepsis, increase for residents living at approximately 1, 3, and 6-mile distances from a hog farm. The study adds a striking level of detail to prior reports of higher frequency of asthma, bacterial infections, high blood pressure and various respiratory and neurological disorders for workers and residents in the vicinity of large concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs. Source: EWG, from ‘Mortality and Health Outcomes in North Carolina Communities Located in Close Proximity to Hog Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations,’ NCMedicalJournal.com, September 2018.

Excerpt:

Residents of communities near industrial-scale hog farms in North Carolina face an increased risk of potentially deadly diseases, Duke University scientists reported in a study released this week.

Researchers found that compared to communities without big hog farms, in the communities with the highest hog farm density, there were 30 percent more deaths among patients with kidney disease, 50 percent more deaths among patients with anemia, and 130 percent more deaths among patients with a blood bacterial infection, called sepsis. The communities near the heaviest concentration of large hog farms also had a greater risk of infant mortality and lower birth weight.

Duke scientists analyzed 2007-2013 data for disease-specific hospital admissions, emergency room visits and deaths across North Carolina. They compared the incidence of those health indicators among North Carolinians who live one to three miles from a hog farm to residents who live six to 12 miles away. An estimated 650,000 North Carolinians live within three miles of a large hog farm, according to an EWG geospatial analysis of state data, which was not part of the Duke study.

Studies like this do not prove that contaminants from hog farms are responsible for these illnesses. Other factors, such as availability of local health care facilities and residents’ lifestyles, also play a role. However, the overall evidence shows a strong correlation between the proximity and density of hog CAFOs and nearby residents’ health—a strong argument for added public health protections, such as limits on the number, size and locations of factory swine farms.

Boozhoo (hello), my name is Ken, I am a disabled Ojibwe artist from northern Wisconsin. I am writing this post because I am having a hard time making ends meet and any donations I could possibly receive at this time would be greatly appreciated. Recent events have left my bank account depleted and my cupboards bare, I have some food but it will not last and I still do not know how I will cover all the utility bills.

I do have PayPal, that is really the best way to donate at this time, the email I use for that is: baapimakwa@gmail.com, or you can click here.

I have the opportunity to move, and this is something I desperately need to do for my health and well being, I will have better access to medical care and the services I require. To make this work I am going to need to be bringing more funds than my disability payment, I really need to get some art together and get more things on my redbubble, I would love to do something like a patreon but I don’t think I can put out timely content at this time.

I have a scanner now, I am desperately in need of a new computer, I have been using a borrowed computer for the last few months and will have to give it back before I move, and it is not compatible with my scanner and I am unable to add editing software to it even if I could.

I am trying to raise at least $1000 at this time, for moving expenses and a new laptop, I am trying to move forward but there is so much holding me back and I need help.

I’m not even worried about the laptop at this point I just really need to move and I need help to do it, anything helps.
