So this week I have been the curator of the Sweden account on Twitter (yes, that one). It’s been mostly fun, but yesterday I decided to talk about asexuality. It obviously brought out the shitheads (and the Straights). But it was all worth it for one single message I received privately (even though several people were applauding what I was doing and totally on my side and super sweet and lovely).
But one guy from Spain sent me a really long DM on my personal account. He told me he’d never been attracted to the idea of sex, never thought it was a fun thing to do, and his past three relationship failed cause of it. He hasn’t had sex in “God knows how long” and doesn’t miss it at all. He had try to tell a girlfriend and a friend about it and the former tried to make him like sex, the latter just thought he was weird. But he didn’t know about asexuality. He thought something was wrong with him. I’m the first asexual person he’d ever heard of. He wanted to understand.
Apparently after reading my tweets (but I guess before I had had time to reply cause I was at family dinner all night) he did some googling on the subject. He finally understands what he is is. He’s a heteroromantic asexual man. He can finally “start feeling good with [himself] about this”. He said “Really, it’s like taking weight out of my chest. It’s incredibly much clearer now.”
I’m crying as I write this. He says he “feels free now”. Just because I dared to bring it up. People think something is wrong with them because they don’t feel sexual attraction. It’s been labeled a mental or hormonal disorder for so long. And people just don’t know that it’s normal, or even that asexuality exists.
So please, you fucking bigots. Get off your high horse. Let us talk about sexuality. Let people feel free.
This is Otis. He lives in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Otis is so fat that he’s been king of the National Park’s Fat Bear Week two of the past three years. Otis, is 22 years old, with blondish brown hair, a straight, narrow nose, and deep scars on his neck and above his right eye. When he’s at the top of his game, fans describe his neck as “relatively thick,” his body “walrus-shaped.”
I already posted another photo with a fat bear, another nominee in the Fat Bear Week contest.
The story about Otis, bears, Katmai National Park, bear hibernation, Fat Bear Week and all things related is a fun story in Outside. Here’s the link if you want to read it.
I think one of my major problems with media that deals heavily in themes of good and evil is that my formative years contained Terry Pratchett’s work which just blew my head clean off and put it back on my shoulders a little more firmly and then told me “there are no heroes, no legends, no miracles, just you. It’s you against the darkness and the metaphorical wolves at the door…better bloody do something about that then, hadn’t we”.
And don’t put your faith in revolutions – they always come around again.
And being good isn’t an innate quality – it’s an action that requires doing good for other people even and especially if you don’t like them, it’s hard work and you don’t want to. Bad impulses, bad thoughts don’t matter if you recognize them for what they are and turn them into positive action.
And the duty of the police should be to protect the people, not the power structure.
And we, as people, make our own gods, our own stories, our own creeds, not the other way around, which means we can change those stories and thus change our world, because nothing is more powerful than a story.
Conservatives who talk about CNN as if it’s some sort of ideological or activist leftist news source are so goddamn stupid.
For fuck’s sake, at least MSNBC pretends to be left-wing. CNN is the most bland, centrist, middle-of-the-road nonsense you can find on TV.
They perfected the “Side A says 2+2=4 and Side B says 2+2=5. We don’t want to be partisan, so that’s all we’re going to say about that.” style of reporting.
“Communist News Network”? More like Constantly Neutral Network. Jesus fucking Christ…
