Climatic Chart of the World, Showing the Distribution of the Human Race and the Animal and Vegetable Kingdoms.

Yaggy’s Geographical Portfolio, 1893.

Note that ‘Arab’ and ‘Hindu’ (Indian) are considered sunsets of White Caucasians in this map. This isn’t an oddity of this map – ‘Arabs and Indians are white’ was the common classification at the height of scientific racism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is a superb example of how racism is arbitrary, as European white supremacists nowadays consider Arabs to be the primary threat to whiteness.

Now look across the Atlantic. Although Latin Americans, North American white supremacists’ current primary fixation, are not referred to directly, you can see by the blue coloration of Mexico, Central Amee, and coastal South America that they’re also considered white Caucasians.

Race is arbitrary and changes with time.

Who gets to be in the white club varies and basically unless you’re northern or western European your white club card can be rescinded at any time.

I do wonder how much of the classification covering at least some areas reflects longer-established colonization by Europeans/wishful thinking about population replacement, though.

Prompted specifically by both coasts of British North America being “Caucasian”, when the actual natives definitely did not have that white club card any more than in the pink-shaded areas. I would guess that the situation with Mexico, the Caribbean, and the coastal rim around South America might be similar.

Which wouldn’t necessarily account for the stripe down through the Arabian Peninsula and into India, but it’s the best explanation I can think of for the Americas.

Upchuck the black vulture (Chuck for short). Happy Halloween!

I’d never thought I’d say this, but that is a very cute vulture.

You might be surprised at how cute vultures can be! While Chuck is a little uncomfortable about large crowds, he is super cuddly with people he trusts and is a total ham for the camera. I’ve only gotten the chance to hang out with him a few times, but he’s very clever and a joy to work with!

On October 11, 1988, ACT UP members from all over the country descended on the headquarters of the Food and Drug Administration in Rockville, MD, in an action they called “SEIZE CONTROL OF THE FDA.”

ACT UP activists demanded that the FDA make its drug approval process faster and more ethical in order to get more experimental drugs into the bodies of people who needed them. They demanded that drug trials include women, people of color, IV drug users, and all other people with AIDS who had traditionally been excluded from trials and therefore denied access to new drugs.

As a result of the action and ACT UP’s continued lobbying, the FDA adopted ACT UP’s proposed structure for drug trials, Parallel Track, which greatly expanded access to experimental medicines.

Read more about the action here.

Join the fight! ACT UP still meets every Monday at 7pm at the LGBT Center in NYC.

One good way to attract fruit flies into your bathroom, of all places: Bandages with manuka honey in the trash! 😧

I felt like a dumbass, taking that long to figure out what might be drawing them in there. (Seeing some congregating around the trash can kinda helped, a little while ago.) But, it’s really not much honey, and I haven’t even been thinking of it as food in that context. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Guess I’ll try closing that up well in plastic bags, besides making sure it’s emptied more often for a while.
