Do you ever come across someone online who technically shares all the key points of your ideology, but there’s something about them that makes you uncomfortable. Like there’s something that makes you feel that they’re not being honest about their motivation, but you can’t put your finger on what it is.

No.  There’s a lot of reasons this doesn’t happen to me, but the primary one is that if someone seems off to me I pay attention to that before I pay attention to their politics.  There are assholes and creeps of literally every political and social persuasion and the ones who you agree with are the ones you need to be the most careful about.

As a secondary thing – I don’t tend to find people who share all the key points of my ideology online, because my ideology has been banged around a lot over the years and is full of revisions and compromises and relativism.  I don’t share my whole deal on here and I don’t expect other people to share theirs.

My advice, particularly to young people, is: trust your creep radar.  Don’t idolize and don’t make excuses for others. Take what you think is useful and leave the rest.

Young people need to remember that chronic abusers are skilled manipulators and will ALWAYS sound better and smarter and cooler and more reasonable than abuse victims. They know how to sound right, to display the correct politics, to network, to have a great excuse for everything. That’s how they get away with hurting and using people. Meanwhile, their victims are kept confused and incoherent, reactionary and socially clumsy, if they’re not just actively silenced.

Don’t trust anyone just because they SOUND good and say all sorts of things you like. So many abusers are SO GOOD at doing that. Watch how they treat their friends, and especially watch how they treat enemies. Chronic abusers use their friends and try to destroy their enemies (and the former becomes the latter VERY quickly) and try to categorize the world into just those two categories.

“chronic abusers are skilled manipulators and will ALWAYS sound better and smarter and cooler and more reasonable than abuse victims.”

This. For the simple reason that the abuser has time to think up a story and make sure it’s coherent and logical sounding. The victim, on the other hand, will have a messy and self contradictory story because they are remembering messy complicated stuff that didn’t always make sense.

Also imx the victim rather than the abuser will be more likely to say they might have had some responsibility. “Well I should have said no but I didn’t because I felt like that was silly” “I wanted her to hurry up and get the name calling over with so I picked a fight because one was coming anyway” “I ping pong between thinking he’s evil and missing him so much” etc.

Those are messy complicated human reactions to an impossible situation that no one can navigate perfectly (because the right thing to do is find some way to safely leave.) if someone seems upset but isn’t making perfect sense that’s not a count against their story it’s a count for it.

(If someone cant give any details that can be a count against it! But minor inconsistencies, or seeming paradoxically to not completely hate someone who did blindingly awful things are common, not rare.)

Minding one’s own business needs to be a course in college…

This makes me sad. I grew up in a diverse area near the westcoast and I love casually hearing other languages. It makes me feel closer to the world and happy that they’re free to speak whatever language they want. This might sound weird, but whenever I hear them, it reminds me that strangers are real people with their own life and history. It’s a fact we easily forget. Language is such a huge part of who we are. I can’t imagine being forced to deny a part of my identity. To be told that I need to squish myself into their boxes or I’ll become the nail that needs to be hammered down. I hate this and I am so sorry this is happening to you.

If you move to an English speaking country, speak English, or better yet go back to the country that speaks your language and no one will say shit to you 🙆🏻‍♀️ the complete entitlement from immigrants when the loacals ask them to assimilate to their country. I wouldn’t go to Korea and cry like a baby because they told me to stop speaking English. Its expected I speak Korean. You people need to grow up .

While the United States is a predominantly English-speaking society, there is actually no official language.  What would you say someone speaking an indigenous language?  Also, the person who wrote these tweets speaks English?  She was speaking Korean over the phone to her cousin in Korea.  Do you expect her to speak in English to someone who might not speak it rather than a shared one because she’s in a public space in an “English speaking country”?  Do you believe that everyone sharing a public space with you owes you something?

There’s a big difference between assimilation and integration and I don’t know how to tell you that assimilation is not a desirable thing.

Literally how the fuck are you going to call the victim entitled? They were having a private conversation and some fucking rando told her what language she could be speaking in a private fucking conversation that didn’t involve her at all. Gtfo.

For someone as paranoid and worried about people making fun of me behind my back as I am I was startled I discover other white people I knew objected to people speaking their native language in the street here in the U.K. because “they’re probably talking shit about me”

I remember going “but if you were in Spain with your family and walking down the street talking English with your family would you think that was wrong?”

“No”

“Then why is it wrong for them to speak their language?”

“Because I know they’re just talking shit about me!”

And how arrogant is that? Like paranoid “everyone secretly hates me” me thinks that’s arrogant and unnecessarily paranoid and also deeply racist

And it confused me as well because I never ever assumed people were speaking a different language to make fun of me specifically.

But yeah, attacking people for speaking a different language than English is atrocious

And even if they were talking shit about you, who gives a shit? Suck it up, Buttercup. Make like every fat kid in high school had to and keep walking.

so a racist got utterly demolished in less than 30 seconds on the New Zealand morning news on Monday and it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen

who knew a white guy could be capable of such an iconic response, he knows what’s up and is having none of that shit, every other white guy take notes tbh

I love that he said Pakeha

Can someone write what its being said in this?

Male co-host: We have had a whole heap of feedback regarding
Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis’s proposal to institute a prison run on Māori
values into New Zealand. He’s looking at potentially establishing this prison
up north. It isn’t Labour policy just yet, it’s just an idea of Kelvin Davis’s.
And this has been really really divisive on our Facebook page this morning. (sarcastically)
Here I think we have the single greatest email, the single greatest message we
have ever had on breakfast.

(clears throat deliberately) “’Janice’ says: Good morning. I’m
sick of hearing that Māori need different treatment. If they don’t want to live
in our society, then maybe we should put them all on an island and leave them
to it.”

Male co-host: “Janice. That is LITERALLY what happened! That
is the history of our country. Last I checked, Māori WERE on an island, they
were left to it, and then Pākehā (Māori term for white New Zealanders) turned
up and look how that worked out. But thank you very much for that brilliant
insight. Goodness me. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, they actually-“

Female co-host: “Actually, you can’t even get angry, you
just actually need to laugh and then screw it up and put it under the desk.
Just when you thought-“

Male co-host: (mimicking letter) “’Put them all on an
island, leave them to it.’ Yeah. What a great idea that is Janice.

I really need “What a great idea that is, Janice.” to be a meme filled with those stupid complete cognitive dissonance bigoted statements.

White folk are ignorant of the genocide that their people inflicted on others. Or they just don’t care.

I’m still pretty messed up and feeling jet-lagged from that virus. The continuing blood sugar wackiness is probably not helping.

Now I can suddenly barely keep my eyes open, and would really like to get down for a couple of hours. Here’s hoping that doesn’t turn into 8 or 12 again 😵

And, guess what! 🙄 I did make myself get up with the alarm long enough to take a pill I really don’t need to forget, turn off the fish lights, and use the bathroom. Couldn’t stay awake much longer, though. Only like 9 hours total this time, and I guess my system really needed the rest.

Also, I managed to miss an Amazon delivery this morning by about half an hour. Didn’t expect them to try that early, because they usually don’t. But, the delivery person showed up in the maybe hour window between Mr. C leaving for gaming and my waking up for good. Because of course they did.

Not a huge deal, but annoying. They’re supposed to try back tomorrow, but I kinda wanted one thing today.
